In a move that producers of one-hit wonders have been waiting patiently for, YouTube announced it is opening up its Partnership monetization program to amateur creators who hit it big on the site with one-off viral videos. Until now, YouTube only sold ads for clips produced by well-followed members its ad-partner program. “To determine whether a particular video is eligible for monetization, we look at factors like the number of views, the video’s virility and compliance with the YouTube Terms of Service,” explained Product Manager Shenaz Zack on the company’s blog. “If your video is eligible for monetization, you will receive an email and see an “Enable Revenue Sharing” message next to your video on the watch page, as well as in other places in your account.”

Sony is making a genuine effort to give Amazon a run for its money in the nascent eBook reader market, unveiling a new 3G-connected device (see below) and striking new relationships with a variety of traditional and digital publishers who pledge to provide content in the industry standard EPUB format. Sony’s Library Finder app will allow you to search for books from multiple sources in the format and access eBooks from your local library that expire in 21 days. Joining the EPUB movement are independent bookseller BooksOnBoard, NetGalley, Powell’s Books and more than 200 indie booksellers across the country.

Bellevue, WA-based toy and game start-up Smith & Tinker received $29 million in funding from a group of tech and game investors including Paul Allen’s Vulcan Capital, Alsop Louie Partners, Foundry Group, Leo Capital Holdings and DCM, which led the round. One of the company’s first creations is Nanovor, a hybrid targeted at boys which links online and offline play. A proprietary handheld which extends the play experience offline, dubbed the Nanoscope, is due to be released starting in October. Smith & Tinker plans to build Nanovor into a full scope entertainment franchise, including weekly animated webisodes, comics, a graphic novel, field guide.

OpenTV announced that its “EclipsePlus” campaign management technology went live at Suddenlink Media, the advertising division of MSO Suddenlink Communications. The system, which manages multiple DMAs through a single database, will manage all of Suddenlink’s local ad sales operations for the operator’s Central and Western U.S. ad sales divisions.
Online video advertising network Tremor Media, provider of the Acudeo video monetization platform, has secured an unspecified investment from SAP Ventures, a division of SAP AG. The company has raised more than $40 million to date from investors such as Meritech Capital Partners, Canaan Partners, Masthead Venture Partners and European Founders Fund.


Following up on initial recommendations made in the Digital Britain report, The British government says it is considering leveling sanctions against internet users who obtain content illegally from file-sharing sites. Proposals from the Dept. for Business Innovation and Skills include requiring Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to bock individuals’ access to download sites, throttle or reduce bandwidth speeds or suspend their accounts altogether. The commission is currently seeking comment on the proposed actions and has extended the deadline for comment to Sept. 29.
Hulu‘s plan to launch an supported online TV service in the UK may be pushed back to 2010 as the venture is still weeks away from signing licensing deals with broadcasters such as ITV and the BBC, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Croatian broadband provider Iskon deployed Edgeware‘s Orbit-2X server platform to deliver advanced on-demand IPTV services, including network Personal Video Recording (nPVR), catch-up of live TV and Video-on-Demand (VOD) services. Iskon´s nPVR service allows subscribers to record up to ten hours of live TV in the network, with a catch-up TV service that enables replay of the last 48 hours of broadcast of select channels.


unveiled a new addition to its line of eBook readers, which it first debuted in 2006. The Reader Daily Edition model will, like Amazon’s Kindle device, finally add wireless connectivity. Users can use the 7-inch touch-screen interface to turn pages, scribble notes and navigate through the devices multiple menus. Sony has partnered with AT&T to provide 3G network connectivity, (the telco is also handling data transmission for Plastic Logic’s eReader.) The Daily Edition is expected to retail for $399 and is due out in Dec. Sony also announced that its smaller 5-inch Reader Pocket Edition will be priced at less than $200 – a new low for the eBook reader market.
Now that he’s back at work, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is spending much of his time focused on developing a new Apple tablet computer that combines the iPhone’s touch functionality with the power of a full-size computer, per the WSJ. An Apple tablet has been in the works at least since 2000 when a patent related to the device was filed.
If there wasn’t already enough competition, a company called Irex Technologies is also entering the eBook reader fray connecting, like Plastic Logic’s planned eReader to the Barnes and Noble digital book store for its content. The Irex device will feature an 8.1-inch screen, 3G connectivity and a stylus-controlled interface.


MySpace will call on online advertising veteran Wenda Harris Millard to take over for Jeff Berman as Head of Ad Sales. Wenda became President of ad consultancy Media Link in April and will remain in the position during a period of restructuring at the Fox Interactive Media division.

has named Mike Grehan as VP and Global Content Director for Search Engine Watch (SEW), ClickZ, and Search Engine Strategies (SES). Mike, formerly Acronym Media’s Global KDM officer, is a New York-based, international consultant who has been involved in online marketing since 1995.
NYC-based interCLICK hired Kurt Munzinger as SVP/Sales for the West Coast Region, and Heather Oxer as VP/Sales for the Midwest Region. Kurt comes to interCLICK from Specific Media and Platform-A, now AOL Advertising.

Part of the quest to eliminate piracy has to be to simplify the process of finding legit content online, on TV or on DVD. One of the more useful web-based content listings sites to come along is Locate TV, put together by NDS Group, Ltd., the News Corp./Perima Funds technology joint venture that supplies cable and satellite TV providers with middleware, iTV apps, Set-tops, etc. It searches Tribune’s Zap2it databases to provide localized listing data then allows you to build customizable schedules that will remind you when your favorite shows, movies or stars are coming on, or are being released on DVD. Search for a show such as Rescue Me and you’ll find detailed episode guides, cast and credit info., and a rundown of what episodes are available online. (Listings include links to the most recent episodes on Hulu, as well as links to $1.99 episodes on Amazon and $2.99 episodes on iTunes.) The browsing interface indexes shows by genre and start time, so you can get an idea of what’s coming on in the next few minutes, or preview what shows are about to kick off new seasons. Locate TV, currently available for the U.S., U.K. and Republic of Ireland, also offers embeddable widgets you can place on your blog or personal site. A free accompanying Locate TV iTunes app is easy enough to use, but its functionality is limited; it relies too much on the phone’s Safari browser, which slows down the process. While we’re on the subject, YouTube has launched its own Fall TV Preview complete with more than 80 video previews and an interactive feature, asking users to predict which shows will become the biggest hits.
