Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 19, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon enters into a licensing deal with Louisiana-based Southern Star Amusements (SSA) to create its first Nick-branded water and theme park in New Orleans, LA, which will be called Nickelodeon Universe New Orleans.  SSA will build the new theme park as part of the City of New Orleans and SSA’s redevelopment plan for an existing 65-acre space that has previously housed a Six Flags theme park (which closed due to Hurricane Katrina) and before that the Jazzland park.  The park will not only carry the Nickelodeon name but will feature Nick-branded rides and activities.  Under the deal, Nickelodeon will receive a licensing fee and the City of New Orleans will hold a leasing deal with SSA.  With construction set to begin this fall, the new park will be funded by private investors and in part by Go Zone bonds and is slated to open by the end of 2010.  There will be no local public funding used to build the park.  While Nickelodeon Universe New Orleans is Nick’s first outdoor theme park, it will be the second Nickelodeon Universe park; the first is at the Mall of America in Minneapolis.  A little more than a month ago there were rumors that Nickelodeon and SSA had inked a deal, but there was no deal in place at that time.
