Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 13, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Comcast Corporation and MGM Studios Inc. are teaming to launch Impact, a VOD channel exclusively focused on action programming. The channel, launching first to Comcast subscribers this week, will showcase action films and TV shows, with some available in hi-def. During its first year, Impact can utilize more than 1,000 titles from the MGM library under the action umbrella including the James Bond series, Rocky and featured stars such as Chuck Norris, Charles Bronson and Sylvester Stallone. Impact will also highlight specific programming themed weeks targeting genres in the action category like thrillers, crime, espionage, westerns and more.

Tonight’s Finale:
SCI FI Channel: Scare Tactics at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Beginning September 1, MTV Networks will rebrand its hi-def music channel MHD by offering new exclusive programming and a name change to Palladia. The additional programming on Palladia, which means a grand stage or vast arena, will include recorded concerts each Saturday night at 9p, special theme weeks and rock movies which will air on Thursdays at 9p. The revamped channel will open with Outdoor Music Week starting September 1 with performances from Madonna, Eric Clapton, Foo Fighters among others.

IFC picked up another British comedy, The IT Crowd which is currently airing in the U.K. on Channel 4. The series, which is distributed worldwide by FremantleMedia Enterprises, will air in the new AUTOMAT programming block on Tuesday nights beginning September 30. The IT Crowd is about the technical support team of a fictional corporation and consists of six 30m episodes for each of the three seasons. IFC will air the first two seasons this fall and the third will air in early 2009 after its premiere on Channel 4 this fall.

Fine Living Network is adding Iron Chef Japan to its schedule and will kick things off by airing a Sea Monster Week starting next Monday-Friday at 8p.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Tori Spelling and CBS Paramount Network Television could not come to terms on a contract for her to appear on The CW’s 90210. The plan was to have Tori reprise her Donna Martin character on a recurring basis. Former stars from the original series, Jennie Garth, Joe E. Tata and Shannen Doherty are still scheduled to make appearances throughout the season on the new series.

CBS is bringing back a new version of the classic cop series Hawaii Five-O. Criminal Minds executive producer, Ed Bernero is behind the series revival as well as writing it, having dubbed it Hawaii Five-O 2.0. In the original series Steve McGarrett, played by Jack Lord, headed the fictional Hawaiian state police department. In the new edition, Steve’s son Chris will be in charge. Other details from the original version will be freshened up and used in the new installment including the memorable theme music and something similar to the famous closing line: “Book ’em, Danno”. The series will be shot on location in Hawaii and is produced by CBS Paramount Television. Ed Bernero is also working on another crime series for CBS called Washington Field about the D.C.-based FBI National Capital Response Squad. This project has received full cooperation and clearance from the FBI for production to take place inside FBI facilities and to use the “from the files of the FBI” logo.

ABC has a new project on the horizon, based on the 2002 Jennifer Lopez film Maid in Manhattan. The pilot will be written by Chad Hodge, and Lopez will be one of the executive producers, reports THR.  Similar to the film, the story is about a Latina from the Bronx who works in the housekeeping department at a high-end midtown hotel, where a guest mistakes her for a socialite and falls for her.  The television series will focus more on the maid and her colleagues at the hotel, rather than the love affair of the movie. Also exec producing are Joe Roth and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Promising not to give up on the digital subscription model, Starz confirmed it is shuttering its Vongo download service on Sept. 30, refusing any more new subscribers and promising to refund the subscriptions of any current customers. The site has offered unlimited downloads of Starz-licensed movies and TV shows for a flat fee of $10, allowing customers to save titles to their hard drive for later viewing. Instead the company will continue to offer the service as a (branded) white label option for other distributors such as Verizon, which launched the Starz Play broadband video service to its FiOS TV subscribers this past May. What went wrong? Take your pick. Getting people to pay for online video is difficult. Porting digital downloads to other devices continues to be challenge for all but the nerd class. What’s more Apple expressed no interest in adopting the SVOD service for the iTunes platform, despite several overtures from Starz.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYICO Global Communications Ltd., which is developing satellite services that will make video and programming available in cars and other remote locales, inks a deal with Turner Broadcasting System to provide content from Cartoon Network and Adult Swim in its alpha trials of its mobile media service, ICO mim.  The alpha trials begin soon in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina and Las Vegas, Nevada.  ICO has already entered into deals for its trials with NBC Universal and Discovery Networks.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Disney Channel UK is uncovering its new 5×5-minute Undercover Coach series this month in the U.K.  In each episode, a British sports star will surprise and mentor young athletes.  The show was produced in-house by the network in London, according to Broadcast.   Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.

Effective immediately, Stuart Diamond is the new CFO of GroupM, North America, joining from National Medical Health Card Systems Inc. where he served as CFO. He follows Joe Scangamor in this position who departed from GroupM to take on the role of COO/CFO with Enfatico, another WPP agency.

Chris Albrecht has left the IMG building.  Albrecht joined IMG just less than a year ago, and is headed back to Foresee Entertainment, an indy development and production company he formed before joining IMG.  IMG provided this statement: “While Albrecht acknowledges that IMG has world-class media-production and distribution businesses in both sports and entertainment, when he joined the company in September 2007, the parties intended to raise substantial funds to augment and expand IMG’s media and entertainment business. However, market conditions intervened to frustrate that goal. The parties are separating on an amicable basis, regretful that the association was unable to work.”

WGN-TV Weathercenter tapped meteorologist Duffy Atkins as primary Weeknight Weather Anchor starting immediately. Duffy joins the Chicago team from KREN/Reno, the CW affiliate where she was chief meteorologist.
