~ MORE GOOD STUFF  ~

A&E Network explores the world and domains of people who are acute hoarders in the new original nonfiction series Hoarders. Seven 60m episodes debut August 17 at 10p and each episode profiles two different people who carry their disorder to the extreme, saving every item even when they face personal crisis. Screaming Flea Productions produces the series for A&E.

In an upcoming home improvement series, DIY Network wrecks havoc on a normal house to demonstrate the damage a house undertakes over years of wear. Disaster House premieres October 6 at 10p with 13 episodes. Host and contractor Josh Temple drops a piano through the roof of the house and conducts man-made earthquakes and floods the basement among other catastrophes to show how to repair common as well as unusual household calamities.

Last Thursday, TLC opened new series Police Women of Broward County at 9p, delivering 2.2 million total viewers.

MTV’s fourth season premiere of Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew on Sunday at 9p posted a 1.8 rating among P12-34 and averaged 2.3 million total viewers. The reality dance competition series now airs on a new night and time, Sunday’s at 9p.

MTV approved a new development slate of five new series projects:

  • Hard Times (wt) – From David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, a half-hour single camera scripted coming-of-age comedy about fifteen year-old RJ Berger, starring Paul Iacono in the lead. The network ordered 12 episodes.
  • Untitled Rob Hoffman Show (wt) – Mentioned in yesterday’s edition, MTV is moving forward with a show featuring multi-talented Robert Hoffman featuring a mix of comedy, dance, viral video and hidden camera stunts.
  • Downtown Girls – Real-life series follows five young women as they juggle careers, men and friends living in New York City.
  • Megadrive – Host Johnny Pemberton tries out extreme vehicles while driving cross-country, even though he has failed his drivers test many times.
  • American Idiots (wt) – From Katalyst’s Ashton Kutcher, Jason Goldberg, Rod Aissa and Karey Burke, reality series where a cast of “idiots” act out popular viral videos found on the web for cash prizes.

MTV also announced second season pickups of three returning series:

  • Is She Really Going Out With Him? – with 20 new episodes produced by Tijuana Entertainment and BermanBraun.
  • Silent Library – with 20 new episodes
  • Teen Cribs – with 40 new episodes

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Comcast launched four additional South Asian channels in the San Francisco area from STAR, a wholly owned subsidiary of News Corporation. The four channels, STAR ONE, STAR India News, STAR India GOLD and VIJAY join STAR India PLUS, a Hindi general entertainment channel which has been available to Comcast customers since December 2008.

Last month, The Documentary Channel (DOC) re-launched as a full commercial network and also made a multi-year carriage deal with DISH Network L.L.C. The Documentary Channel is available to more than 21 million homes across the US through DISH Network and various broadcast stations in major markets.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT  ~

A trio from FOX’s former series Arrested Development are partnering on a new single-camera comedy that received a script commitment from FOX. Arrested Development creator/executive producer Mitch Hurwitz, co-star Will Arnett and co-executive producer Jim Vallely together are penning the script about a wealthy, pompous Beverly Hills guy who falls in love with a philanthropic, nature-loving woman who doesn’t like his lifestyle or values. Sony TV and Tantamount will produce with Hurwitz executive producing with Tantamount’s Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum as well as Vallely, Peter Principato and Paul Young. Arnett will star and also be a producer.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  First Microsoft unveiled Bing, an innovative new approach to search designed to provide you with as much information as possible to keep you engaged within the portal itself. Soon after Yahoo outsourced its search duties to Microsoft in a long awaited partnership. Even Facebook is getting into realtime search (see below). Rest assured that Google is not standing still. The search giant has begun soliciting feedback on its next generation search product, codenamed “Caffeine,” that jolts users with an enhanced architecture to improve speed, accuracy, scope and timeliness of search queries. Saturday A18-49 Analysis: FOX came out ahead among A18-49 Saturday night at 1.6/7, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX’s double dose of Cops repeat episodes at 8p averaged a 1.6/7 while ABC’s tried-and-true movie encore Finding Nemo came next at 0.8/4. Same story at 9p as FOX won with AMW: America Fights Back at 1.7/7 and ABC’s movie followed at 1.2/4. CBS placed first at 10p with the last half of a two-hour 48 Hours Mystery rerun at 1.3/5 with NBC’s Law & Order: SVU repeat next at 0.8/3.

At 7p, ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos rerun and NBC’s Dateline repeat tied for #1 at 1.6/6 with CBS’ 60 Minutes encore close behind at 1.5/5. The rest of the evening belonged to NBC as NFL Pre-Season action commenced with a three-hour game. NBC posted a 3.3/10 at 8p followed by CBS’ Big Brother at 2.6/8, while ABC’s new version of Millionaire was fourth overall at 1.5/5 behind FOX’s double The Simpsons repeats averaging a 1.7/5. Then at 9p, interest in the NFL game waned yet NBC prevailed with a 3.0/9 with FOX’s comedy reruns Family Guy/American Dad were next at 2.1/6. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

NBC Universal Global Networks named Paul Curtis to the new position of VP/Commercial Strategy for the UK networks SCI FI, Hallmark Channel, Movies 24 and Diva TV. Starting next month, Paul will report to Laurence Dawkin-Jones, Managing Director (UK), NBCU Global Networks. Previously, Paul was Deputy Managing Director with BSKYB Sky Media.

W. Don Cornwell, Founder of Granite Broadcasting Corporation announced he will leave his position as Chairman/CEO after establishing the company in October 1988. In addition, John Deushane, COO will also depart the company. Peter Markham will step into the role of Chairman and Duane Lammers will become COO and together will oversee the company.

CBS Outdoor International promoted Antonio Alonso to CEO up from Chief Development Officer. Antonio will manage the company’s international roster of outdoor businesses including those in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and mainland China.
