~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

NBC dethroned its drama series Kings, opting to move it off of Sunday nights at 8p to Saturdays at 8p, starting April 18. Originally, Kings had been slotted to air Thursdays at 10p but was moved by NBC Entertainment President Angela Bromstad to Sunday nights where the most recent episode averaged a 1.1 rating among A18-49. The new John Wells drama series Southland gets the prime Thursday at 10p time slot this week.

The CW will broadcast the Daytime Emmy Awards for the first time on August 30. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences made a deal with The CW to broadcast this year’s show from the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, at the same time the network plans on debuting its new fall lineup. Previously, ABC and CBS alternated airing the awards show but after both declined the NATAS offered it to The CW along with first time show producer, Associated Television International.

With its finale airing tonight, TV Land ordered a third season of High School Reunion. From Mike Fleiss (The Bachelor) and his NEXT Entertainment production company in association with Warner Horizon Television, the new season of High School Reunion will have eight episodes set to premiere in third quarter 2009. During the sophomore season of High School Reunion, the series averaged 883,000 total viewers at a median age of 45.

Spike TV will launch the six-part 30m web-to-TV series MoCap, LLC exclusively on April 24 at 12a. From Worldwide Biggies Inc., MoCap, LLC is a humorous behind-the-scenes look at a low-scale motion capture studio willing to do anything to work within the video game industry.

Coinciding with Earth Day festivities, Planet Green renews five original series for second seasons during the week of April 19-25, per B&C. The series include Emeril Green, Focus Earth with Bob Woodruff, Greensburg, Renovation Nation and Wa$ted!

Lifetime Television contends you can eat and lose weight in its new series Cook Yourself Thin beginning May 4 with back-to-back episodes at 5p and 530p. Double episodes will continue during premiere week Monday through Friday and starting May 11, the series will be stripped Monday through Friday with one new episode at 5p. During each of the 21, 30m episodes, culinary experts Harry Eastwood, Allison Fishman and Candice Kumai demonstrate how one can lose weight through clever recipes. Based on the popular UK series and cookbook, Cook Yourself Thin is produced by Tiger Aspect Productions for Lifetime.

Food Network serves up a fifth season of its popular The Next Food Network Star competition series, beginning June 7 at 9p. This new season watches as ten contestants battle to see who will end up with their own Food Network show. Iron Chef Bobby Flay hosts and leads the selection committee that ultimately decides who will become the next foodie star revealed during the finale on August 2 at 9p. The Next Food Network Star is produced by CBS EYE too Productions.

More food comes in June as Bravo debuts Top Chef Masters, the spin-off of its Top Chef series, on June 10 at 10p. The flip-flopped premise of this competition/elimination series has 24 world-famous chefs trying to out-do each other until one winning chef remains receiving $100,000 for the charity of their choice. Throughout the series run, guest stars and celebrities will be featured including Neil Patrick Harris, Zooey Deschanel, the past Top Chef winners as well as appearances by Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio, Padma Lakshmi and Gail Simmons among others. Top Chef Masters, produced by Magical Elves will be hosted by Kelly Choi, food journalist and creator/producer/host of NYC TV’s weekly restaurant show, Eat Out NY.

SCI FI Channel’s series finale of Battlestar Galactica, which aired March 20 from 9-11p increased its ratings when Live + 7 DVR data was factored in. Overall, the concluding episode averaged 2.0 million A18-49 viewers, 2.1 million A25-54 viewers and 3.1 million total viewers.

Sunday night’s season three premiere of The Tudors on Showtime attracted 726,000 viewers at 9p and 272,000 at 11p, plus another 400,000 On Demand viewers.

DTV Update: Nielsen reports 3.8 million or 3.4% of US TV households continue to be completely unready for the proposed June 12, 2009 digital transition. In March, 610,000 US homes readied for the DTV switch date.

UPFRONT 2009: ABC Family

ABC Family confronts the upfront season with momentum high as the network touts 2008 as its best year to date and first quarter 2009 as its best quarter ever. The network adds three new original series this summer:

  • Make It or Break It – a one-hour scripted drama, set in the competitive world of gymnastics, follows several teen hopefuls as they train for the Olympics. Peri Gilpin and Candace Cameron Bure will star along with cast members Chelsea Hobbs, Ayla Kell, Josie Loren and Zachary Burr Abel. The series was created and written by Holly Sorensen and Paul Stupen who also serve as executive producers. Premieres June 22 at 9p.
  • 10 Things I Hate About You – 30m, single-camera series inspired by the hit movie about the Stratford sisters, Kat (Lindsey Shaw) and Bianca (Meaghan Jette Martin) who are very different as they begin at a new high school together. Premieres July 7 at 8p.
  • Ruby & the Rockits – 30m, multi-camera comedy from ABC Studios and executive produced by Shaun Cassidy and Marsh McCall. The series is about former teen idol Patrick Gallagher whose quiet family life is invaded by Rockits band mate and brother, David who shows up with his teenage daughter, Ruby. ABC Family also announced new season returns of three one-hour original series: The Secret Life of the American Teenager with season two on June 22 at 8p; Lincoln Heights for a fourth run on August 4 at 9p; and season three of Greek on September 14 at 8p. In addition, ABC Family will premiere its original movie Labor Pains, starring Lindsay Lohan on July 19 at 8p and previewed its 12th annual holiday franchise “25 Days of Christmas” featuring the original movie Santa Baby 2 starring Jenny McCarthy, Paul Sorvino and Dean McDermott.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   A day after the AP unveiled its intentions to take firmer control of its content online, Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt advised newspaper publishers to embrace digital platforms as a way to serve the needs of today’s readers in a carefully scripted closing keynote address at the Newspaper Assn. of America‘s annual confab. His recommendations included taking advantage of mobile devices as a reading platform. Regarding the AP flap, Mr. Schmidt warned publishers to heed what the reader wants: “These are ultimately consumer businesses. If you piss off enough of them you will not have any more, or if you make them happy, you will grow them quickly.” An attorney for Google also responded to the AP’s vow to track down illegal content aggregators in its public policy blog yesterday, claiming that the new stance doesn’t pertain to Google’s longtime partnership with the news service.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Production has begun on Skyrunners, the first original TV movie for Disney XD.  A science fiction adventure starring Kelly Blatz (Aaron Stone) and newcomer Joey Pollari, Skyrunners will feature alien creature effects designed and created by Weta Workshop (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia).  The story revolves around two teen brothers that commandeer a UFO that crashes near their town and uncover an evil alien plot to take over Earth.  A production of Ranger Productions and Shaftesbury Services II, Inc., Skyrunners is directed by Ralph Hemecker (Numb3rs) and written by Richard C. Okie (Quantum Leap, Earth: Final Conflict) along with Adam Wilson & Melanie Wilson. Okie also serves as executive-producer of the movie.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.
