Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 4, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
In one of the cable industry’s largest deals to date, Comcast has agreed to purchase Patriot Media & Communications for $483 million in cash which equals $6,000 per subscriber. Currently, Patriot has nearly 81,000 subscribers in 31 communities located in central New Jersey that covers Princeton, Chatham and Mendham. Comcast adds these Patriot subscribers to several properties the company already owns in central New Jersey. This deal is expected to close in third quarter.
On Tuesday, during a special meeting, 99% of News Corp. shareholders voted in favor to trade the company’s ownership in DirecTV Group Inc. with Liberty Media Corp. in exchange for $550 million in cash and Liberty’s approximate $11 billion share in News Corp. Now that John Malone, Chairman of Liberty Media Corp., relinquishes his 16% stake in News Corp., Rupert Murdoch will be able to strengthen his control over the company he founded. The deal, which was agreed to last December, is still pending approval from the FCC.
TLC will brave the talk show genre when it airs a sneak preview of Shut Up! It’s Stacy London this Friday at 10p following the season premiere of What Not to Wear at 9p. Stacy London’s new series will begin in earnest this fall and feature interviews with celebrities and shoe and fashion designers, as well as advice, beauty tips, makeovers and more. The first episode has interviews with Jane Krakowski, Lisa Rinna and shoe designer Kristen Lee. This pilot episode was produced by BBC Production USA.
Showtime‘s premiere of The Tudors drew a 869,000 total viewers on Sunday night at 10p, and another 404,000 for its 11pm airing, marking the pay-TV network’s biggest premiere night in the past three years. Showtime currently has 14.5 million subscribed nationwide.
Whoopi Goldberg stars in The World According to Whoopi, a stand-up special on Bravo this Thursday night at 10p. During the one-hour show, Whoopi turns her comedic views on everything from kids’ manners today to racism. Outtakes of the show can be seen on www.bravotv.com . The show is produced by Rick Mill Productions in association with Bravo.
Broadcast Evening News Ratings Update: For the week of March 26, 2007, ABC’s World News Tonight with Charles Gibson and NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams finished in a dead heat among A25-54 ratings, tho NBC pulled ahead in total viewers. The official results are:
NBC: 8.08 million total viewers; 2.0/9 A25-54
ABC: 7.93 million total viewers; 2.0/9 A25-54
CBS: 6.16 million total viewers; 1.5/7 A25-54
Then for the month of March 2007, ABC’s and NBC’s news broadcasts matched A25-54 ratings, with only 110,000 total viewers separating the two news broadcasts. The results for the month are:
ABC: 8.55 million total viewers; 2.1/9 A25-54
NBC: 8.44 million total viewers; 2.1/9 A25-54
CBS: 6.75 million total viewers; 1.7/7 A25-54
Fine Living TV Network will premiere a new culinary series this Thursday night at 930p called Glutton For Punishment with cookbook author Bob Blumer as host. This 30m series will follow Blumer as he tackles various gastronomic adventures such as the world oyster shucking contest or New York’s Waiter’s Race. Glutton For Punishment will air Thursdays and Fridays at 930p.
Michael David Fox, Event Producer and Planner, died on March 30, 2007 at the age of 42. He enjoyed a varied career in the entertainment industry in local theatre in NY and Baltimore, as a musician, computer programmer, photographer and copywriter, all before becoming an Event Producer and Planner. He conceived, developed and executed special events for Wenner Media properties including Rolling Stone Magazine, US, Men’s Journal and Family Life, with a special focus on image accounts and fashion advertisers. Fox is survived by is partner David Ender.
Wilkes-Barre-based CP Media, LLC has completed its transaction to buy seven TV stations owned by Pegasus Broadcast Television for $48.5 million. New Age Media Management, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CP Media, will operate and manage the stations which include WOLF and WQMY/Wilkes-Barre; WPXT/Portland, ME; WDSI/Chattanooga; WTLH/Tallahassee; WGFL and WMYG/Gainesville. Furthermore, in a separate deal, MPS Media of Scranton, LLC, MPS Media of Portland, LLC and MPS Media of Tallahassee, LLC bought three other TV stations owned or operated by Pegasus for $7 million. These three stations include WSWB/Wilkes-Barre; WTLF/Tallahassee; and WPME/Portland, ME. New Age Media has a joint services agreement with MPS Media to operate these stations as well.

Bravo is developing a new reality competition show called Money Shot inspired by the many evocative photos that grace magazine covers and sell issues. Aspiring photographers will vie to find the perfect “money shot” all the while facing challenges and judged by a panel of professional photographers. The winner will get a cash prize and a chance to have their work featured in PEOPLE magazine. 25/7 Productions will produce the pilot.
NBC has ordered up a pilot called Welcome to the Family from executive producers Bernie Mac and Ben Silverman of Reveille, says Hollywood Reporter. May sound like a comedy, but it’s actually a reality series about couples from different backgrounds religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds who are about to become engaged to be married. Cameras follow and Mac narrates as the couples meet their soon-to-be in-laws for the first time.

Michael Renda has been appointed VP/GM of WTXF/Philadelphia, the FOX affiliate, and assumes the position immediately. Michael will oversee the station’s business and operations and will report to Jack Abernethy, CEO, FOX Television Stations.
Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution (WBDCD) has elevated Mark DeVitre to SVP/Business Affairs and Operations to head all the business and legal affairs activities for WBDCD. He will work closely with and report to Eric Frankel, President, WBDCD, as well as the WBDCD executive team to find new and future distribution channels for the Studio’s entertainment products which include feature films, television series, miniseries, television movies, specials and animation.
MarVista Entertainment has expanded the executive team located at its headquarters in Los Angeles:

MONDAY – A18-49 Analysis: CBS scored the winning numbers Monday night with 5.1/13 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC came next with 4.3/11, and then FOX 3.8/10, NBC 2.8/7, UNIV 1.7/4, CW 0.8/2 and TELE 0.4/1. During the 8p hour, ABC controlled the field (or rather the dance floor) with Dancing with the Stars at 4.3/13, and the finale of FOX’s Prison Break was second at 3.4/10. Then at 9p, CBS passed the competition with the NCAA Basketball Championship final game at 5.4/13, while ABC was #2 with 45m of Dancing/Stars and the start of The Bachelor season premiere at 4.8/12. CBS dominated at 10p with basketball at 7.0/18, and ABC’s The Bachelor premiere was next at 3.9/10. Incidentally, CBS Sports’ coverage of Florida’s win over Ohio State had 40.3 million viewers P2+ tuning in to watch all or part of the game, which is +6% higher than last year’s final NCAA game between Florida and UCLA.
