Cynopsis: DIGITAL

04/29/09

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 29, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

An MSO of all entities fired a major volley in what could become a broadband pricing war. Cablevision announced plans to roll out a super-high-speed Docsis 3.0 cable modem service across its footprint from May 11, offering download speeds of 101 Mbps for $99/month. (That’s quite a value compared to rival Verizon, which sells its 50 Mbps up/20 Mbps down FiOS fiber service for $140/month, similar to the price point for Comcast’s 50 Mbps “wideband” service.) Cablevision also announced it is doubling the speed of its wireless internet access via Wi-Fi to 3 Mbps, offered for free to customers in selected service areas.

Twitter
must conquer the retention rate hurdle is if its going to truly capitalize on its celebrity exposure and break through to become a household brand, according to a new analysis from Nielsen Online. Currently, more than 60% of Twitter users fail to return the following month, meaning that Twitter’s audience retention rate is only about 40%. For most of the past 12 months, (pre-Oprah,) Twitter languished below 30% retention. By comparison Facebook and Twitter’s retention rates were twice as high when they were emerging networks, exceeding 50%. Twitter’s user base is expected to double from 6 million to 12.1 million users this year representing 7.4% of the overall internet audience, estimates eMarketer.

Initially slated to begin during Q4 of last year, Nielsen is finally going through with tests to measure online media usage in a number of its People Meter households in an effort to integrate online viewing within its TV currency. The test is being conducted live among 375 members of Nielsen’s national TV ratings sample, per Mediapost.

Hulu continued its ascent among online video outlets, breaking into ComScore‘s top 3 properties in terms of videos viewed for the first time in March. With its vast store of TV-length content Hulu accounted for 2.6% of all videos viewed in the U.S., but 4.9% of all minutes spent watching online video. Google’s YouTube continued to account for more than 40% of all videos viewed online. In terms of unique visitors, Google Sites once again eclipsed the 100 million mark.

Not another iPhone knockoff … Microsoft is in talks with Verizon Wireless to launch a touchscreen, app-friendly phone early next year, per the WSJ. Perhaps it will be targeted at the female demo; it’s code name is “Pink.”

Verizon could also be in talks with Apple to come up with a pair of “iPhone lite” devices that allow users to watch HD videos over a Wi-Fi connection, reports BusinessWeek. Verizon has also been rumored to be waiting in the wings for the exclusive AT&T/Apple to expire early next year.

USA Network is trying its luck with a new iPhone game styled after its Character Arcade casual gaming portal. Its Letter Matrix game, developed with GlowPlay, charges players to create works no fewer than 3 characters in length in order to put away virtual library book.

CBS Interactive
released an updated version of its TV.com iPhone app offering a new continuous play feature enables users to watch full episodes without having to (annoyingly) click to the next chapter. The app also added new full episodes from Harper’s Island, Rules of Engagement and 60 Minutes, all viewable via a WiFi connection. CBS says the app, launched in Feb., has been downloaded more than 1 million times. The TV.com online portal also reported a 401% year-over-year increase in unique viewers, 153% increase in video streams and 117% increase in minutes month-over-month, citing comScore’s March Video Metrix figures.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The ad community’s newest social network AgencyScoop received a major update this week, reorganizing the homepage into customizable Netvibes-style widgets that allow users to add their own updates via Twitter or RSS feeds. The idea is to encourage users to use the site as a homepage, where news from colleagues and other sources comes in as feeds that are more relevant from a professional standpoint. “My original concept for AgencyScoop was to create a way for people to keep in touch within the industry,” said founder Jason Culbertson, who hasn’t yet quit his day job as Senior Art Director at digital ad agency Atmosphere BBDO. “I really didn’t like the idea of having all these people I work with friending me up on Facebook.” His instinct has apparently proven to be prescient; the community has grown since its Jan. 9 launch purely by word-of-mouth to reach more than 18,000 current active members. Interestingly, a majority of users seem to come from traditional ad agencies rather than just the digital space, speaking to the rapid recent adoption of social networking habits. We’ve been using it here at Cynopsis by creating a Cynopsis Group to preview our daily top stories and newest job listings.

Clarification: ABC O&Os’ new digital channel Live Well HD is being added to stations’ digital spectrum alongside of the Accuweather weather channel. The latter, a licensed channel, is in no way affiliated with Live Well.
