Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 15, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

KidsCo teams with Inspidea, a Malaysia-based digital animation company, to co-produce a new green-themed animated short-form series titled Boo and Me (13×2).  Targeted to K6-10, the series revolves around Bo the Orangutan, who lives in a sanctuary after being rescued from poachers, and his two human pals Aiman and Yasmin as they learn about the environment and conservation.  Produced by Inspidea in Kuala Lumpur, Boo and Me is set to launch from September 2009 across KidsCo’s channels in Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Asia.

MORE KIDS STUFF

BBC’s CBeebies picks up the rights to the 3D animated preschool series Zigby (52×11) from Studi0100 Media, a subsidiary of Belgium’s Studio100.  Based on author Brian Paterson’s Zigby books, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, which revolve around Zigby, The Zebra Who Trots Into Trouble.  The Zigby TV series is co-produced by Avrill Stark Entertainment, Zebra (I) Productions, and Big Animation in association with Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Treehouse TV.

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) inks a range of Nickelodeon program sales coming out of MIPTV:

  • Mediaset’s Italia Uno (Italy) acquires Nickelodeon’s iCarly and Drake & Josh, while Antena 3 (Spain) takes seasons 3 and 4 of Drake & Josh for air on its DTT platform, Neox, from December 2012.  Also in Spain, Terrestrial public broadcaster TVE picks up seasons 1-3 of SpongeBob SquarePants and the first two seasons of Dora the Explorer for air on various TVE channels for the first time later this year.
  • UK: Indie terrestrial channel, ITV, acquires Nick’s Back to the Barnyard, Tak the Power of Juju and The Wonder Pets!, for debut in its national breakfast block, GMTV this year.  The block will also feature SpongeBob, Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego, GO!

Beginning this week Teletoon (Canada) is making some of its tween-targeted and adult-aimed programming as Teletoon and Teletoon Detour, respectively, available on the Canadian iTunes Store (www.itunes.ca ).  Tween series include 6Teen, Total Drama Island and Total Drama Action.  To bolster the launch on iTunes, Teletoon is making one episode from each series free to download.   Teletoon content is already available via On Demand, on Mobile TV and the Teletoon.com video player.

Hit Entertainment launches a new Thomas & Friends Chinese-language website in China ( www.thomasandfriends.cn ).  The website corresponds with the Thomas & Friends TV series, which launched in China on the national broadcaster CCTV in January 2009.  Promotional Partners Group (PPW) manages the TV and consumer product licensing for Thomas & Friends for Hit Entertainment.

Her Interactive, designer/developer/distributor of Nancy Drew PC games, partners with MSN Games to distribute Nancy Drew Dossier and Nancy Drew PC Games.  So fans visiting the MSN Games web site ( www.games.msn.com ) will be able to download the recently released, first title under Her Interactive’s new Nancy Drew Dossier casual games series: Lights, Camera, Curses!, as well as other Nancy Drew adventure games.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Sesame Street‘s buddies Bert and Ernie come to life (as humans) in the new live theatrical production, Bert & Ernie, Goodnight!  The show premieres at Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Children’s Theatre Company (CTC), where it will run September 12  October 25, 2009 (previews from September 8).  Staring Bradley Greenwald and Reed Sigmund (the duo from the stage version of Frog and Toad) as Bert and Ernie, the show features a range of bits and songs from Sesame Street. Bert & Ernie, Goodnight! is presented by special arrangement with Sesame Workshop and VEE Corporation, the latter of which produces Sesame Street live tours.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Douglas Finberg has been named EVP/International Marketing, Marvel Studios, which is a subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment.  Finberg will be responsible for developing and overseeing the worldwide marketing campaigns for the studio’s slate of upcoming films.  He will report to Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige and COO, Tim Connors.  Finberg joins Marvel from Paramount Pictures where he served as SVP/International Marketing, Paramount Pictures International (PPI).  Marvel Studios’ movie release slate for the next few years includes, Iron Man 2 (May 7, 2010), Thor (May 20, 2011), The First Avenger: Captain America (July 22, 2011) and The Avengers (May 4, 2012).

Toei Animation names Eduardo Lucio as its new Latin American Sales Manager.  Prior to joining Toei, he toiled for Taiwan-based Flomo and Hong Kong-based Tai Tung, handling their toy and stationary licensing and Latin American sales.

Zodiak Entertainment appoints Mitzi Berberi as Head/Legal and Business Affairs, Zodiak Entertainment Distribution.  Based in London, with an office in Paris too, Berberi reports to Marco Cordeddu, Head/Zodiak Entertainment Distribution.  Most recently, Berberi was with Distraction Formats (Montreal, Canada), where she served as VP/Business and Legal Affairs.  Zodiak Entertainment is part of DeAgostini Group.
