NBC Universal and Google are teaming on a multi-year advertising, research and technology collaboration which will create shared advertising ROI metrics with the goal to add more non-traditional advertisers to NBCU and create more self-service buying through the Google TV Ads advertising platform. In the next several months, NBCU will make advertising time available on its cable networks such as SCI FI, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC, Sleuth and Chiller to Google TV ads with potential to add more NBCU cable networks in the future. Google TV Ads clients then will have access NBCU’s national audience via these cable networks as well as viewership information, giving them data about what makes consumers respond to advertising messages.

National Geographic Channel’s two-hour premiere of Dogtown last Friday at 9p delivered 2.0 million A25-54 viewers and 4.3 million total viewers.

GolTV, the live bilingual soccer network in Spanish and English, streamlined and simplified its on-air look throughout all of its programming last week. The network is now using symbols and specific colors to represent words and different soccer leagues to appeal to its soccer fans.

Food Network will showcase Giada De Laurentis in a new daytime series Giada at Home starting October 18 at 1p. Viewers will follow Giada as she plans and then makes a complete meal for her family and friends.

here!, the premium gay TV network will introduce a new talk show, here! with Josh and Sara, featuring co-hosts Josh Rosenzweig and Sara Logue. The show premieres October 3 and will cover topics focused on the gay and lesbian community. The network will roll out multiple episodes every two weeks and individual episodes will be available for viewing for up to four weeks. 

National Jewish cable television network, Shalom TV was added to Verizon FiOS TV as part of its VOD library at no cost to subscribers.

Mel Harris, 65, the executive who was a pioneer in first run syndication and the home video business while working at Paramount and Sony Pictures Entertainment, passed away on Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Notable achievements during his career include being a champion of new technologies and new markets; developing a distribution model for syndication hits including Entertainment Tonight to affiliates; working with the development of Star Trek’s The Next Generation in syndication; establishing the home video business while at Paramount; and involved in the launch of the USA Network as well as other cable and satellite channels overseas. Mel is survived by his wife, Ruth, one son and two grandchildren. A memorial service is set for September 16, 1030a at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC announced it will add two new actresses for In the Motherhood, the Mindshare online series which will make a transition to the network with 13 new episodes, reports THR. Will & Grace’s Megan Mullally and Curb Your Enthusiam’s Cheryl Hines are in talks to join Chelsea Handler who along with Leah Remini and Jenny McCarthy starred in the original online version. ABC Studios is producing the television series.

FOX ordered a tentatively titled pilot Eva Adams based on an adaptation from Kevin Falls of Lalola, an hour-long telenovela from Argentina about a womanizer who is turned into a beautiful woman who then experiences harassment reserved only for beautiful women. Sony Pictures Television is producing and Kevin Falls will executive produce along with Sony TV’s Jamie Tarses.

Gospel Music Channel has a new series in the works featuring performances by up-and-coming stars in the Southern Gospel music genre. The untitled weekly concert program will debut early next year although production begins this week as performances will be taped at the National Quartet Convention at the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center in Louisville.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYTwo media powerhouses have joined forces. Google signed a deal with NBC Universal to begin brokering some spot TV ads on a selection of the group’s cable networks including Sci Fi, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC, Sleuth, and Chiller. The partnership will represent the first time Google has acted as an ad middleman for a TV network, although Google launched an auction-based online ad network with little success last year (so far integrated only with Echostar’s Dish Network.) NBC hopes Google will be able to provide it with unprecedented data on viewership and usage to help marketers make real-time adjustments in their media buys. On the local level, NBCU and Google have also agreed to work jointly on adapting the Google TV Ads platform for local market use.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: In New York, US District Court Judge Patterson has found in favor of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. in their copyright case against RDR Books, which planned to publish a reference book titled Harry Potter Lexicon.  The judge completely blocked publication of the book, which Rowling explained, “took an enormous amount of my work and added virtually nor original commentary of its own.”  On its website RDR Books stated that it is “obviously disappointed” and considering its options.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Liberty Global’s Chellomedia is the new owner of Spektrum after acquiring the Central European documentary network from HBO Central Europe.  Valued at 60 million euros (close to $85.3 million), the natural history, travel, lifestyle and military programming channel will fall under Chello Central Europe’s fold, joining other recent purchases such as Filmmuzeum, TV Deko and TV Paprika.  The 13-year old Spektrum is carried to 3.6 million households in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.

Friday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX was head of the class Friday night with 2.0/7 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p, UNIV won with Al Diablo con los Guapos at 2.1/8 while the season premiere of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? on FOX came next at 1.7/6, although competition was slim this hour since Nielsen did not track ratings from the Stand Up to Cancer special on ABC, CBS and NBC. During 9p, the second installment of FOX’s Are You Smarter led at 2.2/7 over UNIV’s Fueogo en la Sangre at 2.1/7. At 10p, ABC’s 20/20 was in front with 2.0/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network tapped Nicole Nichols as SVP/Communications and Strategy where she will be the network’s primary spokesperson and will create and execute internal and external communications strategies. Her scope of work also includes supervising all media relations activities and corporate reputation oversight in support of network programming, business initiatives and brand awareness. Nicole, who joins from Disney/ABC Television Group where she was SVP/Entertainment Communications, will report to Robin Schwartz, President.

VERSUS hired Neal Scarbrough as VP/Digital Media. Neal will supervise the network’s digital media efforts and VERSUS.com. In addition, he will also be the Editor-in-Chief of VERSUS.com and manage the daily operations of the website.

Karama Horne joined New York-based editorial division of Fluid.

Jeff Filippi advanced to VP/Production with MSG Media working with networks MSG and MSG Plus. Jeff will be in charge of the production staff and technical issues for both networks. He will also manage the production roster of both networks which consists of production budgets and supervising all coordinating producers, producers and directors.

CESD Talent Agency named Sam Glick as Director for the company’s L.A. Promo/Trailer/Narration/Voice-Over unit based in Los Angeles. Sam previously was the co-owner of Davis-Glick Productions.

Weigel Broadcasting Co. recruited Jim Marketti as Creative Director for This Network, a new linear digital channel from a joint collaboration from Weigel and MGM. Jim will begin his new position immediately coming from Marketti Creative Group, LLC where he was President/CEO.

Omnicom Group’s STAR Marketing introduced STAR Healthcare a new healthcare specialty unit and has appointed Maryann Kuzel as its President. Based in New York, Maryann was involved with the establishment of STAR Healthcare, coming from Patient Centered Healthcare, where she was President/Founder.

Jeff Rossen was hired as a General Assignment Reporter for WNBC/New York and will, at the same time, be a New York-based Correspondent for NBC News starting immediately. Jeff will report on stories in the tri-state area for WNBC locally and for NBC News nationally.
