Cyn opsis: Kids!
09/05/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 5, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Ca-ching, $989 million, Ca-ching, $990m, and Ca-ching, $991.9m, that is the worldwide box office total so far for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which Buena Vista International expects, by next weekend, will transcend the $1 billion mark. Having already overtaken Warner Bros’ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone which ended just shy of a billion at $976.5 million, Pirates will join the exclusive club of movies that have earned $1+ billion worldwide. Those titles include Paramount’s Titanic with a total of $1.9 billion global in receipts, followed by New Line’s movie Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with a total of $1.1 billion.
Discovery Communications issued a statement about the sudden death of Steve Irwin and upcoming programming to air in honor of the Crocodile Hunter. “Steve was beloved by millions of fans and animal lovers around the world and was one of our planet’s most passionate conservationists. He has graced Animal Planet’s air since October 1996 and was essential in building Animal Planet into a global brand.” The rare accident occurred on the Great Barrier Reef when Steve swam over a stingray and was stung by its barb in his chest. On September 10, Animal Planet U.S., as well as Animal Planet International, will air an all-day marathon tribute featuring the Best of the Crocodile Hunter. Other plans include renaming the garden space in front of Discovery’s world headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, the “Steve Irwin Memorial Garden.” DCI is planning to create the Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter Fund, which it plans affectionately call “The Crikey Fund.” The Fund will be established for wildlife protection, education and conservation.
The Toy Industry Association’s Board-of-Directors voted unanimously at the tail end of last week to keep The American International Fall Toy Show in New York for 2007. Carter Keithley, President, TIA explained the decision, was because New York is the heart of the toy industry and the city affords the best opportunity to keep the industry together. The American International Fall Toy Show will be held October 14-17, 2007 at NYC’s Javits Convention Center and various showrooms around the city. The 2006 Fall Toy Show will be held October 20-23.

BBC Magazines jumps into the world of online teen publishing when it debuts a digital version of its Top Of The Pops (TOTP) magazine in conjunction with Zinio Systems tomorrow. One of the UK’s top teen monthly magazines, BBC Magazines Teen Group is looking at the new online TOTP as a compliment to the print edition. The digital edition of TOTP will include interactive features such as exclusive music videos as well as offering advertisers increased reach and the ability to expand their creative using video and audio content. The first online edition of TOTP will be free, with a subsequent annual subscription running about $19, with online subscribers receiving new editions five days prior to it being available at newsstands. According to my quick search on the web, an annual subscription to a print edition TOTP costs about $65.
