Cynopsis

09/20/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, September 20, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Continuing with the official start of the new season, here are a few starts and stops for tonight’s viewing:

Tonight’s Finales:
CBS
:  Big Brother at 9p; Rock Star: INXS at 10p
UPN:  R U The Girl at 9p

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC:    According to Jim at 8p
CBS:    NCIS at 8p
NBC:    My Name is Earl at 9p, The Office at 930p, L&O: SVU at 10p
ESPN: Bound for Glory: The Montour Spartans at 10p with Dick Butkus
FX:     Nip/Tuck at 10p

By the way, in response to the question yesterday “Which of television’s new characters this fall season would you most want to meet?” the answers came back with numerous votes for Earl (CBS tonight at 9p) and the young Chris Rock (Tyler James Williams) on Everybody Hates Chris (UPN Thurs at 8p).  Other responses included the monster on Lost (ABC), Dr. Molly Anne Caffrey on Threshold (CBS), Dr. Temperance Brennan leading female character on Bones (Fox), Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character Melinda on Ghost Whisperer (CBS) and more than a few votes for Dr. House who is not a new character, but still clearly a viewer favorite.

 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Carat Americas will partner with Spike TV to create and integrate their client Schick into the new Spike TV original series, King of Vegas (produced by G Group).  Spike has ordered 10 eps of this reality series which trains the camera on top gamblers who are competing for a one million dollar cash prize.  The series is scheduled for a 1st qtr 2006 premiere.  Schick’s Quattro razor will have title sponsorship of a weekly segment called The Schick Quattro Poker Face of the Night which takes an up-close and personal look at the art of bluffing.

Si TV has ordered up a second season of its reality series Urban Jungle that takes 13 highly sheltered kids from suburbia and drops them in a small two-bed 1-bath home South Central Los Angeles. The second season is set to debut on October 9 at 10p.  Si TV has ordered 13 episodes.

King World and Harpo Productions are producing a pilot featuring the Food Network’s Rachel Ray (30-Minute Meals).  If the show goes to series, it will be distributed by King World and carried on the Scripps owned broadcast stations, according to Broadcasting & Cable.  Ray’s show will not be a cooking show per se, but rather a lifestyle show, with of course some cooking on the side.

You heard Brad Garrett make mention of hte possibility of a spin-off during Everybody Loves Raymond cast presentation at the Emmys on Sunday night.  And it seems the talks for this project have heated up again in recent weeks.  The new show would focus on Robert Barone, his wife and his in-laws who are played in the recently retired series by Fred Willard and Georgia Engel.

Terrence Michael Prods and Gilbertson Ent. are talking with Tom Sizemore about a project they call Super Sizemore, chronicling the life of Sizemore over his past couple of tumultuous years.  Sizemore has made several court appearances, and has been in and out of rehab treatment centers for a drug problem.  He is also the new dad to twin boys.  Producers will be shopping the project at networks in the next few weeks.

Casting NoteThe Style Network and Kingfish Productions is casting a new show called Relationship Rehab and is making a call out to anyone who has recently had their heart broken, or knows someone who has been cheated on or recently dumped, and you think now may be the time for a life makeover.  Now casting attractive men/women between the ages of 18 and 35, who has friends or family in the NY Metro area willing to participate in their life makeover.  Need to be available to shoot this fall.  Email your story and photo to
OR Call 646-498-4097.

And a story that has nothing to do with TV except perhaps it harkens a little to the Energizer Bunny or the Pink Panther.  In Italy’s Piedmont region, sitting on the side of the 5000′ tall Collette Fava mountain, is a giant 200 foot long pink, soft toy rabbit lying on its back.  The “toy” was designed and erected by the Viennese art group Gelatin who says the bunny was knitted by hundreds of little grannies out of pink wool.  Designed to make you feel elfin and childlike standing next to it, the bunny can also be scaled up its 20′ sides where you can then relax atop it’s soft pink belly.  The plan is to leave the bunny on the mountain for the next 20 years.  Now, I’ve seen what weather can do to a small plush toy after a couple of weeks – I hesitate to think what it would do to a giant plus after 20 years.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Erik Flannigan has been named VP/AOL Programming.  Erik will oversee four distinct but interrelated entertainment websites on AOL and AOL.com including Moviefone,  AOL Music, AOL Radio and AOL Television. He will be based in LA, reports to Bill Wilson, SVP/Programming, and starts on September 26.

Fox Reality has hired Noel Siegel as Director/Development, reporting to Bob Boden, VP/Programming. Noel will be responsible for developing original reality series that will premiere on the network starting in 2006.  He will work with established reality creators and producers to identify compelling concepts that are consistent with the brand and goals of Fox Reality.

Bill Gaden will fill the position of SVP/General Manager at The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, joining the company before the end of this year. He will embrace two complementary goals: to help the company continue to run efficiently, while working with the current team to maximize potential for the copyrights and authors we represent.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM COURT TV

Hey, Court TV viewers! What’s even more fun than dancing with James Brown?

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1962-James Meredith is barred from attending the University of Mississippi.  Meredith, an African-American, had gained admission to the all-white university but was barred from entering its buildings by Governor Ross Barnett.  Federal troops were eventually ordered to Mississippi to enforce the U.S. Constitution and subdue a violent demonstration against integrating the school.  During the riots, two students were killed and over 150 federal marshals injured.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: The usual destiny for a boy from this small town  in West Virginia was to “end up in the mines” but this certain boy had his eye on the sky  and a love for rockets.
