Cynopsis: Kids!

09/01/09

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 1, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Walt Disney Co. goes shopping for long-term growth and acquires Marvel Entertainment for a super hero sized $4 billion in cash (60%) and stock (40%) deal.  Under the deal, which is expected to close by years end, Disney will own Marvel’s 5,000+ characters, many of which continue to be successful in movies, TV series and video games and home entertainment releases, such as Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor.  For those Marvel fans worried about the potential Disneyfication of the Marvel brand, Disney CEO Bob Iger says that is not the plan and that Marvel will not be retooled at Disney.  Marvel will also be well supported by Disney’s marketing and distribution machines.  Marvel’s CEO, Ike Perlmutter, will oversee Marvel’s properties and will work with Disney’s worldwide lines of business to continue to grow and integrate Marvel’s properties.  As for those Marvel movies at other studios (Sony, Paramount and Fox), while ultimately Disney wants to have exclusive distribution control – existing deals will remain in place.  While Marvel characters and themed rides featured at other theme parks (like Universals Islands of Adventure in Orlando) has yet to be worked out.

Responding to the proliferation of racy kid-targeted content on multiple platforms, The FCC is exploring a plan to create a unified ratings system to cover media produced for TV, video games, mobile phones and other handheld devices. The FCC delivered a report to Congress yesterday delving into parental ratings and media blocking technologies such as the V-Chip, Tivo’s KidZone and other measures deployed to give parents a modicum of control over what their kids consume. Consumer advocates have long called for such ratings, in addition to greater education and media literacy for parents and more effective diffusion of information about the tools available to them. Broadcasters, network operators and software companies, on the other hand, have already voiced opposition to a unified ratings plan.
