Vivendi Entertainment grows its home entertainment catalog significantly with the acquisition of assets from Genius Products. Under the deal Vivendi attains the exclusive home entertainment distribution rights to some of Genius top brands including the North American rights for Sesame Street and Classic Media, and US only rights to World Wrestling Entertainment and RHI Entertainment. As part of this deal, Genius Products will continue operations and has entered into a new multi-year distribution deal with Vivendi Entertainment to distribute Genius’ remaining catalog and future releases. Vivendi taps several key Genius Products execs to join the company, including appointing Mitch Budin as EVP and GM, Vivendi Home Entertainment. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Disney Channel‘s new primetime special Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Choo Choo Express premieres Sunday, October 25, 7-7:45p. Targeted to preschoolers and families, the special follows Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and Pluto on a snow adventure. In the special the six animated characters also perform a new song with the band They Might Be Giants. A full-length preview of the special will be available on SVOD Cablevision, Time Warner and Verizon FiOS TV on Monday, October 5. Mobile providers Sprint TV and MobiTV will simulcast the special with the TV debut. From October 26, the special will be available at www.disney.com/mickey and on mobile VOD for AT&T CV, Sprint TV and Verizon V Cast customers. Additionally, www.playhousedisney.com will feature the new game, The Choo Choo Express.
Nickelodeon will host its sixth annual Worldwide Day of Play on Saturday, September 26, during which its TV channels and websites will go off air/offline around the world between 12-3p to encourage kids to get up, get out and get active in their communities. This year six countries and every state in the US will participate in 1,000+ local events. Nickelodeon will continue to offer health and wellness messaging throughout the day when the network returns at 3p, featuring network celebrities. Nickelodeon is again partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC for its NYC RBC Race for the Kids, where a range of celebrities will appear including Nick Cannon, Sean Kingston, Yo Gabba Gabba!’s DJ Lance Rock, Melinda Shankar and Sam Earle (Degrassi: The Next Generation and Lil’ JJ), and Tiki Barber. Other partners hosting events around the country include: 600 local Boys & Girls Clubs of America events; The NFL’s NFLRush.com will also go dark with at least six teams hosting WWDOP events; The US Forest Service and The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) each join as partners for WWDP with events nationwide in conjunction with National Public Lands Day.
The Weather Channel (TWC) teams with Sony Pictures Animation in a promotion for the upcoming animated feature film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which opens wide this Friday, September 18. The promotion initiative includes a range of customized segments created by TWC for cross-platform distribution, including “Local on the 8s” by talent from the film and, and of course, food-centric forecast segments for TWC air, special online ad creative for Weather.com ( www.weather.com ), and a short promotional spot forecasting different food systems that will air on NBC Prime.
The animated series Kamen Rider Dragon Knight (40×30) will debut in Japan this fall on the Toei Channel and Toei Channel HD. Toei Company will also release the series on DVD in Japan in summer 2010. Produced by Adness Entertainment, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight is based on the Toei’s Kamen Rider Ryuki (2002), the 12th season of the original 35-year-old Japanese Kamen Rider series.
4Kids Entertainment will showcase the new animated comedy series, Rocket Monkeys (20×30 or 40×11), at Mipcom 2009 next month. Rocket Monkeys follows the space adventures of two space-traveling simians as they encounter aliens and experiment with new technologies.
Produced by 4Kids Productions and verve Boomstar, Rocket Monkeys will be available for delivery in fall 2010. The property was initially tested on www.4kidstv.com .
Digital Rights Group (DRG) acquires the international rights to the new kids factual series format Undercover Dads. Created by Tiger Aspect Productions, Undercover Dads challenges dads to the ultimate Mrs. Doubtfire-style challenge series in which real life dads are sent to their own homes disguised as a nanny and must make it through two days without family and friends figuring out it is actually their dad. By the way, the kids think they are participating in a show called Mega Nanny so it isn’t like some nanny just shows up at their door. Distributed under the Zeal Entertainment brand, DRG will handle global (excluding the US) rights for the format and the completed series (13×60) produced by Tiger Aspect for BBC2 (UK).
Radio Disney debuts a new edition of its Next big Thing (N.B.T.), a daily multi-platform programming feature that focuses on up and coming recording artists 12-17 years old. For 10 weeks, beginning Wednesday, September 23, Radio Disney will feature interviews and in-studio performances five unsigned acts (a new act every two weeks) and ask kids to vote for their favorites of the group at RadioDisney.com ( www.radiodisney.com ) or via texting. Disney Channel will preview each artist and a taste of their work in interstitials hosted by Tiffany Thornton (Sonny With a Chance). Meanwhile, two songs, videos, photo and bios for each artist will be available at RadioDisney.com, with videos also featured at Disney.com, the N.B.T. mobile site and Radio Disney’s YouTube Channel.

Dora Loves Puppy, Nickelodeon/Viacom Consumer Products’ (NVCP) new apparel, toy and specialty goods line based on Dora the Explorer, launches exclusively at Kmart stores. The line features Dora taking her puppy pal, Perrito, on a new adventure and includes a new online component at www.dorapuppy.com . On the website fan can redeem codes from the merchandise for personalized printable puppy activities, digital downloads, games and screensavers. Kmart is offering various promotions in conjunction with the line launch, including a free personalized Dora Loves Puppy poster with the kid’s favorite picture courtesy of Shutterfly.com (Sept. 13-26), and the Dora Loves Puppy DVD for $4.99 with a $20 Dora Loves Puppy purchase (Sept. 27-Oct. 10). Nick Jr. will host Puppy Playdate, a series of puppy-themed Dora episodes, on September 25, 9a-10:30a.
FitzRoy Media appoints worldwide gaming rights for Heathcliff and Funny Face to Axis 3 Apps. Under the four-year deal Axis has the exclusive rights to develop and distribute games and apps for iPhones based on the two properties. Axis will release of its first Heathcliff and Funny Face game apps this November 2009.
Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) attends at the Home Fashion Product Association’s New York Home Fashion Market this week where it is announcing new deals and unveils new product.
- Serving as the exclusive US licensing agent for Nelvana and Spin Master’s Bakugan, CNE signs a deal with RoomMates (wall decors) that will be available from spring 2010. Existing Bakugan licensing partners Franco Manufacturing (bedding, beach towels, bath accessories) and The Northwest Company (throws, throw/pillow sets) are introducing new product that will be available in spring as well.
- CNE is also seeking room decor partners for its Ben 10 brand. Existing partners showcasing Ben 10 themed products at the show include Jay Franco and RoomMates.

America’s egg farmers launch the Good Egg Project and sign on to sponsor the new season of Sesame Street, the 40th season. The Good Egg Project is an initiative designed to educate Americans about modern egg farming, introduce them to real egg farmers and how they care for their animals, as well as encouraging people to make healthy food choices and do good by fighting against hunger. Egg farmers will donate one egg to Feeding America for every “Eat Good. Do Good Everyday.” Pledge taken on GoodEggProject.org up to one million eggs.
