09.15.09

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 15, 2009, and this is your first early morning briefing.  And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

Tonight’s Premiere:
NBC: The Biggest Loser at 8p

Tonight’s Finales:
FOX: More to Love at 8p
CBS: Big Brother at 9p
ABC: Shaq Vs. at 9p; Primetime: Family Secrets at 1001p
A&E Network: The Cleaner at 10p
Oxygen: Addicted to Beauty at 10p

Actor Patrick Swayze, 57, died Monday, surrounded by his family. He battled pancreatic cancer for almost two years and continued to work despite his illness and treatment schedule on the short-lived A&E Network drama series The Beast. His career was best known for two starring roles in wonderfully romantic films: the 1987 Dirty Dancing (“Nobody puts Baby in a corner”), where he also got to showcase his amazing dancing skills; and the 1990 movie Ghost (“Ditto”) starring opposite Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. At the time of his death, he and his wife were working together on a memoir.

~ MORE STUFF  ~

ABC canceled the futuristic romantic drama Defying Gravity citing low ratings. The final episode aired this past Sunday. The program, headlined by Ron Livingstone, debuted August 2 and was produced by Fox Television Studios.

MTV reports its 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night was viewed by an average of 11 million total viewers over three networks, MTV, MTV2 and VH1. This represents a +21% increase compared to the 9.1 million who watched the VMAs on MTV and MTV2 last year. Nearly an average of 9 million total viewers watched this year’s VMAs on MTV while the network delivered a 7.5 rating among P12-34. On MTV2, an average of 749,000 total viewers tuned in while VH1 averaged 1.3 million total viewers. And in case you are (still) a Kanye West follower, Comedy Central plans to replay the South Park Kanye West “Fishsticks” episode tonight in back to back airings from 9-11p

Programming note: Syndicated talk show Dr. Phil Show did not make its live season debut from New York as planned yesterday. Due to an unanticipated US Open rain delay schedule, the live show would have been pre-empted in a large portion of the US that carry the show. Instead, producers taped Monday’s show and will air it today and the second NY show was also taped and will air Thursday. Wednesday’s Dr. Phil Show will still be live from Philadelphia. Dr. Phil Show is distributed by CBS Television Distribution.

WE tv’s original wedding makeover series, My Fair Wedding with David Tutera launches its second season with a multi-media national marketing campaign. On-air the series premieres September 27 at 10p as part of the network’s WE tv Wedding Sunday. Coinciding with this launch, the celebrity gossip blog PerezHilton.com will sport an exclusive homepage redesign tied in with the show on September 26 and 27. Furthermore, WE tv is teaming with General Growth Properties on a three-city mall tour sponsored by Kodak which will spotlight Tutera in person offering affordable wedding design tips to customers at well-known retailers such as Godiva Chocolatier, Pottery Barn, Swarovski and Williams-Sonoma.

Discovery Channel gets grimy with host and creator Mike Rowe as 11 new episodes of Dirty Jobs returns on October 6 at 9p. The new episodes are a continuation of season five and will follow Rowe as he gets “dirty” doing such tasks as marine salvaging in Miami to sorting items in a recycling center in San Francisco. Dirty Jobs is produced by Pilgrim Film & Television.

It’s a lucky #13 roll out for Comedy Central’s South Park, as the 13th season of the recent Emmy-winning animated series debuts October 7 at 10p with seven new episodes. Also on October 7, South Park Let’s Go Defense Play! will be available for exclusive download via xBox Live Arcade.

Comedy Central additionally will launch the new weekly FremantleMedia N.A. comedy series, Secret Girlfriend on October 7 at 1030p. Each of the six episodes contain two back-to-back 11-minute scripted mini-sodes about a 20-something single guy, his two best pals and roommates and the two girlfriends he is trying to keep secret from each other.

During the weekend of October 10 and 11, Logo network is getting involved with Equality Across America’s National Equality March 2009, a call to action march held in Washington, D.C. promoting LGBT equality. Logo will “go dark” from 11a-3p during the march, and instead will post a message on-air encouraging viewers to visit 365gay.com for more information on the event and how they can become involved on a local level. 365gay.com will also stream live coverage from the march in Washington, D.C. via Twitter updates and throughout the weekend. Logo will also program two days of inspired programming about LGBT activists such as Bayard Rustin and Allen Ginsberg as well as activism stories and community issues.

In its 10th year, Discovery Health continues with a robust line-up through fourth quarter prior to the network transforming to become OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network:

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Well-funded online video start-up Veoh Networks won a summary judgment in a Los Angeles federal court on Friday after a judge threw out a copyright infringement lawsuit brought by Universal Music two years ago. The court found that Veoh’s video sharing activities met the safe harbor requirements under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The start-up maintains that it takes active steps to limit incidents of infringement, including taking down unauthorized clips upon request. The decision, which Universal Music will appeal of course, could have ramifications on Viacom’s $1 billion lawsuit against YouTube as the two companies’ content policies are very similar. This issue if far from settled, but the ruling should make those in the ad supported online video space breath a little easier.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Vivendi Entertainment grows its home entertainment catalog significantly with the acquisition of assets from Genius Products.  Under the deal Vivendi attains the exclusive home entertainment distribution rights to some of Genius top brands including the North American rights for Sesame Street and Classic Media, and US only rights to World Wrestling Entertainment and RHI Entertainment.  As part of this deal, Genius Products will continue operations and has entered into a new multi-year distribution deal with Vivendi Entertainment to distribute Genius’ remaining catalog and future releases.  Vivendi taps several key Genius Products execs to join the company, including appointing Mitch Budin as EVP and GM, Vivendi Home Entertainment.  The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.
