Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

10.27.09

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, October 27, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!  This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Thank You Letters

The importance of a thank you letter is common knowledge within the business community, yet in practice, few people write them.  They aren’t hard to write, nor complicated. A few simple rules –

  • Personalize the letter, include specifics about the interview and address the letter by name to the interviewer him/herself.
  • Thank the interviewer for his/her time, the opportunity, and for any information pertaining to the job and company.
  • Express your enthusiasm for the job and the company.
  • Sell yourself, reiterate your strengths and express your confidence that you can do the job. Confidence is important. Not braggadocio, faith in your ability.

If the interview was informal and with a small company, a written note is preferable. However, with a formal interview at a mid or large sized company, type the letter in a business letter format.  As with any correspondence, edit out the unnecessary words – most of the adjectives – check for errors, and keep it as brief as possible.  Send it promptly (within 24 hours) and by regular mail.

When you send a thank you letter, you are helping yourself in three ways. First, you are reminding the interviewer of your qualifications and enthusiasm. Secondly, you are branding yourself as a conscientious person who pays attention to detail and respects protocol; and lastly, you write a thank you letter because it is good manners, and maybe you will be the only one who does.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~

Jobless in Today’s Economy  What to Do?
By Joel Garfinkle

In today’s economy, every person knows someone who has been laid off, fired, terminated or is unemployed. Finding a new job has become a lot more difficult. You can’t expect to have three great opportunities lined up in the next six weeks. You must stay steadfast and patient. The right opportunity will ultimately come along. Just realize that your job search will take longer than expected.

Here are some tips to get you through this difficult period:

1.        Don’t succumb to the fears of this economic recession.
Be careful how much bad economic news you digest. If you don’t limit your exposure to all the naysayers, you will feel totally defeated. You will lose all your energy and excitement necessary to move forward to find an actual job.

2.        Notice all the people employed so you visualize yourself being employed.
Are people still getting hired? Absolutely! The national unemployment rate through Sept, 09 was 9.5 percent. That means 90.5 percent of American workers still have jobs. Focus on the prospect of joining the vast majority of workers rather than bemoaning your temporary status as a member of a small minority.

3.        Prepare for the long haul a job search can take.
Doing a job search and actually landing a job takes a lot longer than most people expect, even in the most lucrative times. Prepare yourself, in advance, to experience disappointments, lost opportunities, and rejection during your job search. Don’t take it personally. Hold your head high and move on to your next step.

4.        Believe you are employable and will be employed.
Be confident that a job opportunity will happen. You are employable! You will be employed. List all the reasons you are employable and what you have to offer a company. You’ll be inspired by all your talents and skills. Make the strongest case for yourself to energize yourself with a sense of empowerment, confidence, clarity and conviction.

5.        Push though the rejections and lack of job opportunities.
Deal with the rejections that will inevitably come from a job search. Remember, Gone With the Wind was rejected by 38 publishers before being accepted and Fred Astaire was told on his first screen test, “Can’t act! Slightly bald!” Feel confident about your skills, resume, and job prospects and recognize that rejection is a part of the job search process.

6.        Maintain positive momentum with small wins so you feel progress in your job search.
Relish small wins that will keep you engaged in your job search. For example, establish daily goals to make a couple of networking contacts, or contact three people for job leads. At the end of each day, celebrate your progress. These small wins help create momentum so you are able to move forward, stay motivated and take action daily.

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Joel Garfinkle

What is the most effective way to prepare for an interview. I have read that video taping mock interviews might be the best, do you have any other suggestions?

Do research.
Know as much as you can about the company and industry. Research the company’s website, competitor’s websites, and annual reports. Also, find the inside intelligence about the company by reviewing www.vault.com , a website that provides information about the culture and hiring practices of hundreds of occupations and industries.

Prepare stories that show problem, action and result.
You need to share stories during the interview that show the value and impact of your past experience. You do this by taking 5-7 major accomplishments and turning the accomplishment into a story. The story comes by taking a specific problem or situation and showing the action you took and the results that were achieved. Through stories, the person on the other side of the interview will understand how valuable you will be to the company.

Learn as much as you can about the people with whom you will be interviewing.
Gather as much information as you can about the people who you will be interviewing with by viewing social networking sites such as linkedin, Facebook, and more. You can ask the person who contacted you to do the interview for more information.

Memorize your answers to the most common questions.
The most common questions (tell me about yourself, why should I hire you, what are your strengths, why did you leave your last job, etc.) are answers you must know ahead of time. You want to prepare the best answers possible, memorize them and come to the interview prepared. This will help minimize your nervousness and help you come across as a confident.

Once I get hired, what are the most important things I should concern myself with regard to the first week of work with a new company?

Build credibility with your boss.
Set-up meetings with your boss to establish a clear understanding of expectations so both of you are on the same page. Meet those expectations and make sure you prove your value and worth early. You want your boss to feel good about hiring you. Remember, one of your first points of focus is to make your boss’ job easier.

Identify early wins that can be easily accomplished.
When you gain an early win, you help establish a positive perception of yourself. You also show your peers, your boss and senior management that you were a good hire and will help make your group and the organization better.

Learn about office politics.
Too often people join a company and are bombarded by the politics. Don’t get involved with office politics; however, try to glean as much as you can so you aren’t negatively affected. Once you have a clear understanding of the culture and politics of the company, you can choose how best to navigate them.

Focus on your boss’ most important priorities.
By understanding what is most important to your boss, you can prioritize your work to accomplish that first. Your boss will gain immediate confidence in your work and be excited by the future possibilities.
