Cyn opsis: Kids!
10/24/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 24, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
The City of New York has joined the Motion Picture Association of America’s effort to combat movie piracy, which includes illegal recording of copyrighted material as well as the distribution and sales of that material. Amongst the tactics expected to be employed to increase its fight against piracy here, NYC plans to build on its existing Trademark Counterfeiting Initiative as well as: introduce state legislation that would, “criminalize the illegal recording of copyrighted works;” identify buildings in the city where suspected DVD piracy operations are located; once identified, NYC will take legal actions (e.g. fines, shuttering buildings) against landlords or owners who knowingly allow piracy operations to remain on their premises; and the MPAA and NYC will create a public service campaign that will educate consumers about piracy. The MPAA estimates movie piracy cost US movie studios upwards of $6 billion last year. According to the MPAA approximately 43% of that $6 billion, and about 20% globally, begins here in NYC movie theaters.
NYC also laid out an initiative to increase diversity in its entertainment workforce. The city plans to achieve this effort by establishing the Task Force on Diversity in Film, Television, and Commercial Production. The new group is comprised of representatives from the Mayor’s Office, City agencies, the City Council, production industry, organized labor and industry associations, and will identify existing programs and develop new programs over the next six months to increase recruitment of women, veterans, persons of color, and economically disadvantaged New Yorkers to the film/TV industry.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Heroic Film Company has teamed with reality TV producer Allan Novak and designer/creative director Joe Sherman to develop How Embarrassing, a new animated reality series targeted to kids. How Embarrassing will present real stories of real embarrassment as told by kids. The series is being developed with Canadian broadcasters Teletoon.
Actor Tobin Bell, who frequently plays the bad guy in movies, has joined the cast of the family targeted direct to DVD thriller Don’t Think About It, which begins shooting this week in Pittsburgh. Produced by The Hatchery, Don’t Think About It also stars Emily Osment and is slated for a Halloween 2007 release.
MORE KIDS STUFF
MTV has partnered with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to launch Everyday Green, a joint effort that aims to encourage consumers to incorporate environmentally-friendly products into their daily lives. To support the launch of Everyday Green, MTV’s NYC store in Times Square, features an exhibit of eco-friendly products, which can be visited now through November 10, 2006. The Everyday Green concept was developed and designed by Pompei A.D., a NY architecture, design and branding firm that creates retail and cultural environments. While Wal-Mart may not be everybody’s favorite company, this initiative seems like a natural progression, particularly for the MTV Networks family, which over the last 20 some years kids/tweens have been encouraged to participate making their communities and world better in ways that they are actually able to make a difference, such as not polluting, volunteering, turning off lights and water, embracing diversity and so on. Those kids are now that much older and are consumers with their own shopping choices to be made and money to spend.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Muze, Inc. and IGN Entertainment have entered into a partnership under which the two will assume joint ownership of Muze’s existing database of video game/gaming information, which has been renamed MuzeGames. Muze and IGN will further develop the database to feature high-resolution cover images, video game/gaming information, game screenshots, trailers, and game-play samples, previews, and independent reviews etc. IGN will focus its energies on developing content for, while Muze provides marketing and distribution of MuzeGames product to retailers, service providers, consumer electronic manufacturers, portals, libraries and institutions in North America and the European Union. Muze, Inc. is an online and in-store provider of media entertainment product information about books/music/videos/games. A unit of Fox Interactive Media, Inc., IGN Entertainment is a provider of video-game centric internet media and services.
Porter Novelli, the public relations agency, has teamed with The Rose Group to establish Porter Novelli Entertainment, which will focus on meshing entertainment and brands by developing an entertainment lifestyle-based marketing and public relations programs. Porter Novelli Entertainment will be a bi-coastal division, headed in NYC by Lisa Rosenberg, partner, and by Wendy Watson, EVP, in LA, CA, both of whom will work in conjunction with The Rose Group principal Jeff Rose and Brian Rosman, VP.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
ION Media Networks, Inc’s Dean M. Goodman has resigned as President and COO and stepped down as a member of ION’s board of directors to, “pursue other interests.” The company has offered Goodman a $3 million payment in addition to other benefits, according to an Associated Press report. Formerly known as Paxson Communications, ION does not plan to replace Goodman immediately, rather his responsibilities will be assumed by members of senior management team. Goodman joined the company in 1993, and at that time the company primarily owned radio stations and station groups.
