Leading up to the premiere of ABC’s new alien-themed series V, the network is deploying skywriters starting this Friday to create humongous “Vs” in the sky at 26 major US landmarks, reports THR. ABC is not revealing exactly where the Vs will appear though iconic sites like the Statue of Liberty and the Capitol Records building are being considered. The Vs will be visible several times each day at the locations until the series opens November 3 at 8p. Following the fourth episode, V will go on hiatus until early 2010. TeleFutura posted third quarter 2009 double-digit gains in primetime among A18-49 viewers and total viewers versus the same quarter 2008. In the A18-49 demo, TeleFutura’s primetime grew by +52% or +164,000 impressions and +61% with total viewers or +319,000 impressions. Additionally, in third quarter 2009, Telefutura picked up +85,000 A18-49 viewers and increased total viewers by +144,000 in primetime. ~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~
Syndicated daytime talk show, Rachael Ray was renewed through the 2011-2012 season in 90% of the US where the show is seen in 28 of the top 30 markets. Additionally Rachael Ray, distributed by CBS Television Distribution is cleared in the top three markets of the country on WABC/New York, KCBS/Los Angeles and WGN/Chicago. Station groups carrying the talk show include ABC Owned Television Stations, CBS Television Stations, Gannett Broadcasting, Local TV, LIN Television Corporation, Allbritton Communications, Tribune Broadcasting and Hearst-Argyle Television among others. IFC picked up all three seasons (53 total episodes) of Arrested Development from Twentieth Television. Arrested Development premieres on IFC October 25 at 10p where the network will air two back-to-back episodes on Sundays at 10p and also on Tuesdays at 9p during the network’s Automat four-hour programming block. Hallmark Movie Channel is now distributed in the top 30 TV markets in the US with a current total of 25 million households. Hallmark Movie Channel will also premiere original movies as part of its programming lineup starting second quarter 2010. The network recently launched this year on Comcast systems in Detroit, South Florida, San Francisco, Washington State, Portland, Boston, Atlanta, Houston and Pittsburgh; on Time Warner in Charlotte; on Cox systems in Phoenix and Las Vegas; and on Charter in St. Louis. Outdoor Channel Holdings, Inc. said its Outdoor TV was upgraded to the Digital Preferred tier on Comcast Digital Cable systems in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Logan in the state of Utah. Outdoor TV was previously available on the Sports and Entertainment package. The Documentary Channel (DOC) made an exclusive multi-year deal with Image Entertainment involving a collection of 16 documentary films from Image Entertainment’s library. The package includes such titles as Born Into Brothels, Spellbound, War Dance, Muderball, Boys of Baraka and Trials of Darryl Hunt among others. The first film to debut on DOC is Bus 174 on November 23 at 9p; other titles will debut in 2010 with dates to be announced. Independent production and distribution company Entertainment Studios, Inc. said its new E/I program The Young Icons is a firm go for fall 2010. The weekly, 30m series, produced in hi-def targets 13-16 year old children, profiling top young American athletes, scholars, philanthropists and entrepreneurs under the age of 18. The Young Icons is produced and distributed by Entertainment Studios. ~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~
TV personality Brooke Burke was tapped as a “Mommy Correspondent” for the syndicated talk show The Doctors with her first appearance slated for November 5. Burke will appear frequently on the show working out in the field and in-studio as a correspondent and mommy-contributor for the talk show. Production on her taped segments began October 13. The Doctors, produced by Stage 29 Productions, is taped in front of a live audience and is distributed by CBS Television Distribution. FOX is working on a 30m comedy based on the popular National Geographic Channel series Dog Whisperer with Wilmer Valderrama in the title role, cites Variety. Full details on the project are not clear, though the character played by Valderrama will be inspired by Cesar Millan about a professional dog trainer who has built a wealthy business. FOX gave a script plus penalty order to the project produced by Twentieth Century Fox TV and executive produced and written by Emily Kapnek. Barry Josephson will also executive produce through his Josephson Entertainment production company. FOX also approved a comedy spec called Rehab from Sam Laybourne, a writer/producer on ABC’s Cougar Town, per THR. The project will be produced by Peter Chernin with Will Gluck, who may direct. Rehab is about a man who pretends he needs rehab to connect with a former high school sweetheart who is now a rock star. Debbie Liebling will oversee the project. Samuel L. Jackson and his company UppiTV have two new projects on the docket for CBS produced by CBS TV Studios, cites THR. The first project is a multi-camera comedy from Bob Kushell about the wife of a US Congressman who inherits her husband’s seat after he dies suddenly. The second project is a medical drama penned by Andrea Newman about an emergency room doctor who uses unusual treatments on his patients. Jackson executive produces both along with Kushell and Newman on their respective projects. Amanda Tracey, involved with development at UppiTV will be co-executive produce on both projects. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Despite the recession, Apple reported what it’s calling its most profitable quarter ever during FY Q4 ’09, posting revenue of $9.87 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.67 billion, up 45% y/y. The company sold a record 7.4 million iPhones (+70% over previous quarter), 3.05 million Mac computers and 10.2 million iPods across the globe. The iPod continues to enjoy a +70% market share of the MP3 market according to MPD. There were more than half a billion app downloads in Sept. alone and $2.3 billion in revenue was generated during the quarter on app sales. In response to a question regarding competing iPhone “wannabes,” Apple COO Tim Cook noted that the ecosystem that supports the phone gives the company significant momentum. “There are now more than 85,000 apps on the App store, which is a country mile more than anyone else,” he said. PIX/New York, the CW affiliate owned by Tribune Broadcasting promoted Adam Shapiro as GSM, effective immediately. Previously, Adam served as LSM since 2005. In his new role, Adam will manage the station’s sales team encompassing local and national sales, new business and online sales. Warner Entertainment Japan Inc. hired Taichi Fukuda as GM/Warner Home Video and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, Japan. In this newly established position, Taichi will supervise both the company’s home video and digital distribution businesses in Japan which includes sales, marketing, finance and operations. Taichi will report jointly to William Ireton, President and Representative Director, Warner Entertainment Japan Inc. and Marc Gareton, EVP/Warner Home Video and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, Asia and Pacific. Additionally, Yoshikiyo Arai who has served as GM/Warner Home Video in Japan for the last three years will continue as Advisor until his planned retirement this December. Barbara Wellner was named VP/Programming with Metan Development Group (Metan). Barbara will provide oversight for Metan’s weekly international news series THRtv as well as Hello Hollywood, the new version that recently premiered in China. Based in Los Angeles, Barbara’s duties include responsibility over all current programming as well as all content for the company on TV, online and mobile. Barbara will oversee acquired programming, development and global distribution programming strategies, new series and pilot development. Furthermore, Barbara will be involved with new show talent, customizing format acquisitions and managing Metan’s programming team. Kevin McCormick announced he will depart Warner Bros. Pictures and his position as Production President at the end of December, though he will continue at the studio as Producer beginning January 1. Kevin took on his role as Production President in January 2008, with the intent to hold this position for only two years. Warner Bros. will not fill Kevin’s title and Jeff Robinov, President will be the point person for a portion of Kevin’s duties and reassign the remaining responsibilities to other executives.
