Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 17, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

ABC has given a green light for a full season of Brothers & Sisters. This past Sunday night, Brothers & Sisters finished first at 10p among A18-49 (4.9/12). Among women the show is performing well, having delivered this past week a 7.2/17 W18-49 and a 8.2/18 W25-54. So far, the series is the top-rated freshman program on any night in the 10p time slot A18-49, as well as the second highest-rated new series at any time this season with A18-49.

Tonight’s Premiere:
VH1:  Ice-T’s Rap School at 11p

Tonight’s Finale:
A&E:  Inked at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

CBS has extended Close to Home‘s stay for the entire season, which currently airs on Friday nights.  The show is from Jerry Bruckheimer TV and Warner Bros. TV.

Spike TV will debut the fifth season of the opposite match-up showdown series MXC on November 10 at 12a. The 13-episodes will feature such diversities in competition as MySpace vs. Superheroes, Famous Felons vs. Babe Magnets and The White House vs. The World. The show is produced by R.C. Entertainment.

The HorseTV Channel will premiere a 20-episode series The Horsemen on November 5 at 9p which showcases people’s traditions and passions surrounding the horse. The network will air two half-hour shows back-to-back each Sunday night with encore airings on Saturdays at 8p.

Watch Over Me, the next MyNetworkTV primetime series set to premiere in early December, has a promotional partnership involving Wal-Mart, as the series’ lead character, Julia Rivera, portrayed by Dayanara Torres, will be outfitted in the retailer’s Metro 7 apparel line. Promotional spots will air during the show telling viewers where to find Torres’ ensembles, with tune-in signage appearing in 1,500 Wal-Mart stores and in national magazines Vogue and Lucky. Watch Over Me chronicles a love triangle between Julia, her fiancé who is involved in dubious business practices, and the bodyguard who is hired to protect them. The 65 one-hour episodes will air Monday-Friday over 13 weeks, with re-cap shows airing on Saturday nights.

Another sportscaster bites the dustLamar Thomas lost his gig with Comcast Sports SouthEast after his comments made on air following a brawl on the Orange Bow; field between the Miami Hurricanes and Florida International.  Once the scene quieted down, Thomas said, “Now that’s what I’m talking about,” Thomas said as the brawl raged out of control. “You come into our house, you should get your behind kicked. You don’t come into the OB playing that stuff. You’re across the ocean over there. You’re across the city. You can’t come over to our place talking noise like that. You’ll get your butt beat. I was about to go down the elevator to get in that thing.” And if that wasn’t enough, he continued with: “I say, why don’t they just meet outside in the tunnel after the ball game and get it on some more? You don’t come into the OB, baby,” Thomas said. “We’ve had a down couple years but you don’t come in here talking smack. Not in our house.”  The incident led to 31 players being suspended, and Thomas permanent exit.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

MTV will premiere the trailer for the DreamWorks Pictures’ and Paramount Pictures’ film Dreamgirls in the first commercial break of MTV’s Laguna Beach on October 18. Immediately following, the 2:45-minute trailer will air online at www.movies.mtv.com exclusively until midday October 19. MTV.com will also have additional content online leading up to the theatrical opening of the film. Starring Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles and Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls is set in the 60s and 70s and follows the rise of a trio of singers called The Dreamettes.

CBS is teaming up with Yahoo to provide local news feeds from 16 different CBS stations around the country, from markets include NY, LA and Philadelphia. The deal is a revenue-sharing for Yahoo, and helps to extend the CBS online presence, which as of earlier this month includes a deal with YouTube.com, and previous deals with Google, in addition to its own broadband site, innertube.

SOAPnet has launched SoapU, a new platform showcasing student videos who want to be future stars, producers or directors. Students, from accredited American colleges or universities, may submit original soap opera shorts up to ten minutes in length by December 31 for a chance to win a $20,000 budget to produce original content for SOAPNETIC and other prizes. For details on entering, students can visit www.SoapU.com

FremantleMedia and Mobliss are teaming up to launch the new mobile phone channel, Atomic Wedgie, which will be available through a monthly subscription on Sprint’s broadband network here in the U.S. Atomic Wedgie will contain eight content categories aimed primarily at M18-34, ranging from the classic TV series Baywatch to British cult comedies, live action and animated shorts to TV Bloopers.

If you watched Top Chef on Bravo last season, you may be familiar with Chef Lee Anne Wong, who didn’t win the competition, but clearly was noticed by the folks at Bravo.  Wong will get her own broadband-based series called Top Recipe: The Wong Way to Cook that will feature the winning recipe in each week’s upcoming Season #2 run of Bravo’s Top Chef series.  Top Chef debuts tomorrow night at 10p, and the first episode of Top Recipe will air on Thursdays at BravoTV.com. Each webisode is 3 minutes long, and will be produced by Magic Elves – no really, that’s the production company’s name, Magic Elves.

Be sure to check out the Cynopsis Video Podcast – it has a whole new sensibility about it, and I think you may get a kick out of it. Oh yeah, and it has all the good info you get in the Cynopsis print edition, plus a few other bits and pieces. For some, the best news is you don’t have to download, just click on the video window and it plays.

* PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT *

The Crocodile Hunter’s 8 year old daughter, Bindi Irwin, is getting her own show on Discovery Kids Network, working title is currently Bindi: The Jungle Girl. The project was initially to be a father/daughter deal, and some of the scenes shot before Steve Irwin’s death will be incorporated into the series.  A very outspoken and self-assured young lady, Bindi’s show is scheduled to join the Discovery Kids Network in 2007.

After several projects in yesterday’s edition of Cynopsis for The CW, here’s yet another – an untitled action/comedy described in Hollywood Reporter as Batman meets Sex and the City. It seems there are two best friends, both women, who after some inexplicable event have superpowers and use them to fight crime.  The project is from Diane Ruggiero, exec producer of Veronica Mars.

NBC has a new untitled drama in development from the creator of Fox’s hit series House, David Shore and writer Peter Blake, says Variety.  The project is about a woman cop and her colleagues, and while it presents as a drama, it will (like House) also contain a goodly amount of humor.

USA Network has a limited series in the works called The Starter Wife.  The six episode drama stars Deborah Messing as a women newly divorced after several years of marriage to a Hollywood studio head; Joe Montegna as her ex-husband’s boss; and Miranda Otto as Messing’s best friend whose friendship changes after the divorce.  The Starter Wife will likely air in the spring.

A project from Appian Way, Madison Road Ent and Pilgrim Films will be shopped to the networks this week – a reality project called E-Topia about a town that is rebuilt as a model green community. Also being pitched are product sponsors and major advertisers.  The show proposes to take a small run down town, and rebuild it from the ground up, in a completely environmental friendly way, and at the same time restores the town’s original beauty.

Casting Call: Hallmark Channel is inviting viewers to share their personal stories of romance, family, humor and holiday celebrations for a new programming initiative called Tell Us Your Story. The selected stories will be made into animated shorts and will air on the Hallmark Channel and online beginning next February. The network will air call-to-action spots about this program starting mid-October. To submit a story or for more information visit www.hallmarkchannel.com.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1989-The deadliest earthquake to hit the San Francisco area since 1906 strikes at 5:04 p.m. and lasts for 15 seconds. The quake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, and its aftermath was witnessed on live television by millions of people watching the third game of the World Series of baseball between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics, held at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The tremor hit moments before the start of the game, and sportscasters were soon performing the duties of news anchors as they reported on the resulting pandemonium in the stadium. The earthquake killed a total of 63 people, while more than 3,000 others were injured and more than 100,000 buildings were damaged.
