Tonight’s Finale: New premium television channel, Epix announced it will launch on October 30. Epix, backed by Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount has scheduled several box office hits and specials during its debut weekend including Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Duchess among other film titles as well as the two hour Madonna concert special Sticky and Sweet: Live from Buenos Aires and the comedy special Eddie Izzard: Live From Wembley. Currently, Epix has one carriage agreement in place with Verizon’s FiOS TV reaching approximately 2.5 million potential subscribers. ~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
ABC gave a full season pickup order for the frosh drama FlashForward starring Joseph Fiennes. This full order joins the previously announced orders for the new comedies Cougar Town, The Middle and Modern Family. Syfy introduces a third series to the Ghost Hunters franchise with Ghost Hunters Academy premiering November 11 at 10p. This series follows a group of up-and-coming ghost hunters taught by experienced paranormal investigators Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango as they explore haunted hot spots in the US. Once the trainees pass the course, they can begin investigating on the other popular series in the franchise: Ghost Hunters or Ghost Hunters International. All three Ghost Hunter series are produced in association with Craig Piligian’s Pilgrim Films and Television. In other Syfy news, the second season debut of Sanctuary last Friday at 10p delivered 946,000 A18-49, 1.15 million A25-54 and 1.9 million viewers. TNT may pick up NBC’s recently cancelled cop series Southland, according to THR. TNT and Southland producer Warner Bros. Television are both owned by Time Warner Company and TNT currently has other cop shows on its schedule such as The Closer and Dark Blue, both produced by Warner Horizon. Prior to NBC’s announcement last week, Southland had six produced new episodes ready for a second season. Sunday night’s sixth season premiere of The Girls Next Door on E! at 1030p averaged 2.4 million total viewers in addition to delivering a 2.20 rating with A18-34 and a 3.08 rating with W18-34. Following at 11p, the series debut of Leave it to Lamas drew in close to 2 million total viewers as well as posting a 1.41 rating with A18-49 and a 2.88 rating among W18-34. NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution announced it sold Bravo’s The Real Housewives franchise to local stations for a Monday-Friday off-network syndication roll out in fall 2010. The series is sold to more than 60% of the US including local affiliates within NBC Local Media in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Miami, San Diego and Hartford. Additionally, the series is sold to Hearst Television stations in Tampa, Orlando, Sacramento, Kansas City, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Louisville, New Orleans and West Palm Beach. Other station groups picking up the franchise are CBS, LIN, Local TV, Media General, Post-Newsweek, Raycom and Sinclair. Cablevision and CBS Corporation finalized a comprehensive content carriage agreement. Terms of the deal allow Cablevision to continue carriage of CBS’ programming and Showtime Network’s content to Cablevision’s 3 million subscribers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The agreement also involves the continued carriage of CBS College Sports Network and the Smithsonian Channel with both added to the iO Gold digital premium package. TV Guide Network adds encore airings of the current new season of Ugly Betty to its lineup starting October 22 at 7p. Outdoor Channel Holdings, Inc. said its Outdoor Channel increased its distribution via Comcast Digital Cable systems in the Seattle market. Outdoor Channel is available on the Digital Preferred tier as well as its existing spot on the Sports and Entertainment tier. Outdoor Channel HD also launched in Seattle in Tacoma. ~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~
Jolene Blalock (Star Trek: Enterprise) is taking on a recurring role in the second season of nationally syndicated series Legend of the Seeker, with filming beginning this week in New Zealand. Blalock plays the mysterious Sister of the Dark who uses her evil powers to threaten Richard’s (Craig Horner) plans and tries to do away with Kahlan (Bridget Regan). Season two of the series opens during the weekend of November 7. Making it official, actress Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) will join the NBC upcoming drama series Parenthood, succeeding in the role originally played by Maura Tierney in the pilot. Helen Hunt was also approached for the part, but a deal was not forthcoming. FOX signed Bradley Whitford to star in the action comedy Jack and Dan, cites THR. Whitford will play Dan, a drunk unpredictable cop who is partner to Jack, an ambitious, straight-laced cop. Fox TV Studios is producing the 60m series with 13 episodes. A remake of the British soap Upstairs, Downstairs is in the works in the UK with a 2011 launch in the US planned following the UK run, cites the New York Post. The series, featuring the wealthy Bellamy family, will be set in 1936 whereas the previous version was set at the early part of the 20th century. Co-creator, Jean Marsh, who also played the maid, Rose, is again involved though promoted in the new version as head housekeeper. Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives) is in talks with ABC to develop a new one-hour series project for the network,, which he will write and possibly executive produce with current Desperate Housewives executive producer, Alexandra Cunningham, reports THR. The project has been called a spinoff of Desperate Housewives although it will be a stand-alone program with a tone similar to Desperate Housewives. Sabrina Wind, another executive producer on Desperate Housewives also executive produces the new show. Currently, Cherry has an overall deal with ABC Studios, which is involved as producer on the new project. Casting Call: NBC’s variety competition series America’s Got Talent, from FremantleMedia North America and SYCO Television, is hosting open casting calls for the show’s fifth season. The initial three audition cities (with more cities announced soon) include: Chicago on October 17 and 18; Philadelphia on October 25 and 26; and New York City on October 31 and November 1. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Two months after Google CEO Eric Schmidt resigned from the Apple board to appease FTC regulators, Genentech chairman Arthur Levinson – who serves on both the Apple and the Google boards – followed suit yesterday and resigned from both boards. FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz praised the companies and Mr Levinson for the decision, as did various advocacy groups. Global independent production company Banijay Entertainment has acquired Nordisk Film TV, the television production arm of Nordisk Film owned by Egmont. The transaction also includes Nordisk’s international distribution unit, Nordisk Film TV World. Under the new parent company of Banijay, Jacob Houlind, CEO and Peter Hansen, CCO of Nordisk Film TV will continue in their respective roles and the company will continue to operate under the brand name of Nordisk Film TV. Sherry Brennan advanced to SVP/Sales Strategy and Development with Fox Cable Networks (FCN) where she will spearhead distribution strategies on behalf of FCN’s roster of cable networks. Sherry’s duties include making distribution deals with alternative distribution providers and presenting strategies for interactive TV, mobile and online distribution efforts. She will also work with the company’s development team on new channel start-ups and acquisitions. In her new role, Sherry will continue to report to Mike Hopkins, President/Affiliate Sales and Marketing, FCN. Josh Jacobs joins Glam Media, Inc. in the newly created position as SVP/Brand Advertising Products and Marketing. The former Yahoo!
