YouTube will still operate independently and be based in San Bruno, CA to maintain its brand and dedicated consumers. The deal is expected to close in 4th qtr of this year. YouTube’s founder, Chad Hurley, is all of 29, and created the site in February 2005 in his garage along with his tech guy Steve Chen, 28.

Tonight’s Premieres:
WE tv: Hair Trauma! at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

MGM and New Line Television have a new working arrangement whereby MGM will manage the U.S. domestic distribution of New Line’s motion picture packages and series for syndication over the next two years. MGM will also oversee the upcoming barter sales.

It’s baaaaack!  From FremantleMedia North America, the beach patrol series Baywatch will return to American televisions next fall 2007. The 109 one-hour episodes of the original series starring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson will be distributed by Litton Entertainment over the next three years on barter terms.

Court TV has ordered up a second season of its original series Haunting Evidence, to debut in 2007. The show features an investigation team comprised of a psychic profiler, a paranormal investigator and a medium who use their skills to visualize and describe a crime scene in great detail for law enforcement within 24 hours. The series is produced by Departure Films.

Comedy Central’s South Park premiere drew in 2.3 million A18-49 viewers and a 2.2 A18-49 rating, making it the fourth most watched Comedy Central telecast with this demo. Compared to last year’s season debut, this year’s A18-49 ratings were up 38% and the A18-49 total viewers increased by 44%. In addition, South Park’s ratings for M18-24 jetted up to a 4.9, which represented an 81% increase.  Immediately following South Park and making its debut was Freak Show which earned a 1.0 A18-49 rating and delivered one million viewers.

Fremantle International Distribution has made a deal for its new music series Live From Abbey Road to air on the Sundance Channel starting next year. The twelve episode, one-hour series will begin airing on Channel 4 in the UK next month and will feature performances ranging from the The Who to Paul Simon at the north London studios, the famous home to the Beatles. The show is produced by Michael Gleason and Peter Van Hooke at Live From Abbey Road Ltd.

Telco Productions, Inc. will debut two new weekly series into national syndication in September 2007:

  • The Big Audition is an hour-long series featuring a variety of singing, dancing, acting and musical acts by contestants who send in videos of themselves to be judged by Hollywood talent agents. Semi-finalists will then be judged by viewers, with a winner chosen every 13 weeks and rewarded with a contract with a top Hollywood manager.
  • Dog Tales is a half-hour magazine-style show about everything dogs -their owners and the latest in dog products.

G4 will launch its first original reality series The Block in January. The series is set in the Lake Tahoe hotel The Block, the first hotel chain that caters to all things snowboard related, which was founded by famed snowboarder Marc Frank Montoya and hotelier Liko Smith.  G4’s cameras and crew will spend the winter soaking in the full snowboarding experience and lifestyle.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

The UK-based company Galleon Entertainment has an exclusive contract with Sony BMG Music Entertainment (UK) to develop and launch a new worldwide entertainment destination called Apollo’s Pad. The multi-platform entity will debut next summer and will provide content featuring innovative animation set to popular songs. The content will be broadcast via online and mobile devices as well as through television. The terms of the agreement has Galleon managing the project through production and broadcast for on-air, online and mobile technology, in addition to licensing and merchandising. Sony BMG will supervise the music production, rights clearance and the pursuit of sales through digital and retail outlets. Starting out, each company will retain ownership of its own intellectual properties, but according to the terms of agreement, Sony BMG has the option to acquire a minority equity stake in the project.

CBS Corp. has entered into a deal with YouTube to provide programming clips and to share any advertising revenue produced by the deal. CBS is the second major media company to strike a promotional and advertising partnership with YouTube, since NBC Universal signed its deal with the online video sharing site in June. The CBS clips will be available on a specific branded channel identified on YouTube’s home page. Clips from CBS and Showtime programs will be included along with sports programming and fall previews.

Viewers will soon be able to access SHOWTIME programs through an Off-Deck WAP portal built by Mobile Streams, based on a new agreement between Mobile Streams and Showtime Networks Inc. The portal will allow viewers to access content immediately via mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios, smartphones and communicators. Showtime will include video clips and wallpapers from Dexter, Weeds, The Underground, and later on clips from Sleeper Cell, The L Word and Showtime Championship Boxing will be available. The launch of Off-Deck WAP portal will coincide with the premiere of Dexter and include a multimedia campaign.

* PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT *

Garth Ancier and Gail Steinberg are teaming up again to develop a new syndicated series.  The last time these two got together, they came up with The Ricki Lake Show.  This time, it’s a daytime series with host Christy Haubegger, being development for Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.  Christy is the creator of Latina magazine targeting young Hispanic women.

CBS untitled comedy project in development starring Christine Taylor as an A-list Hollywood actress who retains her small-town roots and hometown relatives, has cast comedian Modi as her house manager. The project is being produced by CBS Paramount Network Television and Taylor’s husband, Ben Stiller.  Stiller is expected to appear from time to time, in the role of Taylor’s husband.

CBS has also added to the cast of NUMB3RS with the addition of Kathy Najimy appearing in a recurring role.

TBS has ordered up a comedy project – with a cast contingent provision – from Big Cattle Prods called Imperfect Union.  The setting is a factory, and the comedic tension comes from the new young female shop steward who inherited her position from her father, and the head of the factory, a young man who also inherited his job from his father.

U.K.-based Zig Zag Productions has formed a joint venture with Ben Silverman’s LA-based production and distribution outfit, Reveille, with the first commission already secured.  The first project, Going for Broke has been commissioned by the U.S.’ Lifetime Network and will also be available at Mipcom.  Going For Broke is a financial contest which pits two debt ridden spendaholics head-to-head in a battle to win the ultimate prize … the wiping off of all their debts.

NBC Universal has signed a first look deal with Second City, which over the course of two years gives NBC the first look at new talent, characters and shows, as well as the library of content for use in new development and/or a variety of digital platforms.

Raines, starring Jeff Goldblum, is scheduled to be added to the NBC schedule in midseason.  Joining the cast as Goldblum’s ex-police partner is Malik Yoba.

Wild World of Spike is a new project ordered up by Spike TV, with an order for 7 one-hour episodes, says Hollywood Reporter. With a bigger interest in the “agony of defeat” over the “thrill of victory”, the show gives an up close and personal look at a variety of sports you may not have heard of before – dirt skiing, blindfold kickboxing and mop-jousting, among others.Each episode will be hosted by martial arts fighter Kit Cope, skateboarder Jason Ellis and comic Sam Tripoli, who will present a variety of these thrilling sports from around the world.
