Cynopsis: Kids!

11/04/08

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 4, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Everyone … altogether now … Disney Pictures is set to release a sing-a-long version of its new feature film High School Musical 3: Senior Year on November 7, 2008 at 125 theaters nationwide.  While the sing-a-long versions of the HSM movies have been a successful model for Disney Channel, this is the first ever Disney Picture sing-a-long movie release.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Chorion enters into a relationship with Chinese media company Shanghai Media Group (SMG) to co-develop new animated programming aimed at K6-11 around the world.  Under the deal Chorion and SMG will appoint co-development directors based in NY and Shanghai respectively and conduct creative summits in NY in February 2009 and Shanghai in June 2009.  IN a separate deal, SMG will serve as Chorion’s new business partner in China for the new 3D CGI animated preschool series Olivia.  A Nickelodeon US commission, Olivia is based on Ian Falconer’s books and animated by Brown Bag Films.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Buster Baxter returns in three new special episodes (3×30) the animated series Postcards From Buster on PBS Kids Go!  In the new episodes Buster adventures through Italy, China, and Egypt, which will air on consecutive Fridays during the regular Arthur timeslot from November 7, 2008 (check local listings).

Nickelodeon celebrates Thanksgiving with Superstuffed Nicktoons Weekend, running Wednesday, November 26  Sunday, November 30.  The holiday weekend of programming will include a sneak peek at the new Nicktoon series, The Penguins of Madagascar, set to launch in 2009 and based on DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar movies and a number of premiers.  Programming will include: a Wednesday night replay of the new animated episode of Naked Brothers Band in The Suptastic 6; Thanksgiving day (8a-9p) back-to-back Nicktoon movies; Friday (8a-10p) a SpongeBob SquarePants marathon including premiere episodes (8-10p); Saturday (6a-10p) hour-long blocks of Back at the Barnyard and The Mighty B! and premieres in the evening (8-10p), as well as the sneak peek of The Penguins of Madagascar; Sunday features a marathon of Fairly OddParents including premiere episodes at (8-9p).  Additionally, www.nick.com/stuffed will offer sneak peeks of all of the new episodes debuting as part of the on-air event, as well as featuring holiday themed quizzes, downloadable screensavers and the like.

BBC One will air the new Wallace and Gromit adventure, A Matter Of Loaf And Death (1×30), this Christmas.  The new special reunites creator Nick Park and writer Bob Baker, who together co-wrote The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave.  Commissioned by the BBC, A Matter Of Loaf And Death is an Aardman Animations production for BBC One.  The BBC describes the new adventure as a classic “who-doughnut” mystery.

HIT Entertainment and Ontario’s TVO are partnering to launch the preschool animated programs Wobbly Land (26×5) from HIT Entertainment, and Frances (6×11) from the Jim Henson Company and HIT. TVO will air Wobbly Land Monday-Friday at 11:55a, as part of its early learning programming block Gisele’s Big Backyard, and Frances on Sundays at 8:15a.

Chello Zone inks a deal with satellite platform NTV Plus (Russia) for the launch of the preschool channel JimJam, a joint ventures between Hit Entertainment and Chellomedia, this month.  Additionally, Chello Zone completes renewals for its channels in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) with NTV Plus including, Extreme Sports, Zone Club, Zone Reality, and Zone Romantica for its pa-TV platform;

Neil Sedaka will release his first kid’s album, Waking Up Is Hard To Do, on Razor & Tie Entertainment this January 6, 2009.  Inspired by his grandchildren, the release features a collection of classic Sedaka songs that have been reworked for kids and also comes with a coloring book.  New versions of Sedaka’s songs featured on the album include: Where The Toys Are; Happy Birthday Number Three; and Lunch Will Keep Us Together.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cookie Jar Entertainment enters into a five-year agreement Kaboose Inc., a family centric media company, to breathe new life into that latter’s Mommy & Me brand online.  The Kaboose-managed website will launch mid/late January 2009, and will feature daily content and activities aimed at moms, an improved playgroup finder and other tools.  The re-launch of the site will be supported with a marketing campaign, TV ads, radio promotions, print and direct mail ads and other mom-centric efforts, as well as Mommy & Me preschool products available at retail.

Gameloft, a developer/publisher of mobile and console games, enters into an exclusive multi-year pact with Marvel Entertainment.  Under the deal, which begins in 2009, Gameloft will release mobile game based on Marvel Comic’s hero Spider-Man as well as one based on Iron Man 2, the movie sequel releasing in 2010.

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) inks home textiles deals (e.g. bedding, throws, beach/bath items) for its properties Ben 10 Alien Force and Bakugan.  CNE move sings license agreements with Franco Manufacturing and The Northwest Company for Bakugan as well as expanding its license deal with Jay Franco from the original Ben 10 series to the new Ben 10 Alien Force.  The new Ben 10 Alien Force home textile products will debut in fall 2009, while the Bakugan home textile products will be available from spring 2009.
