TNT made a deal with Warner Bros. Television to obtain the cancelled NBC series Southland. TNT picked up the exclusive rights to all six unaired episodes of Southland’s second season as well as the seven episodes from season one. TNT will air Southland on Tuesdays at 10p, starting with episode one on January 12. Southland is produced by John Wells Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Oxygen Media gave a second season order to its weight loss/dance competition series Dance Your Ass Off for 2010. Magical Elves will produce the sophomore season with Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz as executive producers along with series creator Lisa Ann Walter and Kate Rigg. During its first season, Dance Your Ass Off averaged 382,000 W18-49 viewers, 494,000 A18-49 viewers and more than 1.0 million total viewers.

G4 is bringing back the daredevil Pumphrey brothers for a second season of crashing, smashing and demolition as Human Wrecking Balls premieres November 11 at 8p. In each new 30m episode, the Pumphrey brothers will destroy such items as a helicopter, a gas station, a carnival among other things. Human Wrecking Balls was developed by BASE Productions.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

BBC America announced the US premiere of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares  Season 5 (2 eps, 60m) is scheduled for December 2 at 8p. This series is produced and distributed by Optomen Television. Additionally, BBC America will debut the American version of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares US  Season 2, with 12 one-hour episodes on December 16 at 8p. This US version is a co-production of Granada America and Optomen Television in association with A. Smith & Co. and is distributed by ITV Global.

Comcast is making the Outdoor Channel available to customers in Minneapolis-St. Paul; Western Wisconsin and Manitowoc, WI; Independence, MO; and Olathe, KS on its Digital Classic tier.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

Oprah Winfrey will voice the upcoming Discovery Channel series Life. The 11-part series, chronicling a multitude of living things using state-of-the art hi-def filming, is set to premiere in March 2010.

FOX said Gregory Itzin will return for season eight of 24, reprising his character Charles Logan. Fans of 24 last saw former President Logan during season six after being stabbed by First Lady Martha Logan (Jean Smart). By bringing back Itzin’s character, 24 will unite both of the drama’s “presidents” in the new season as current President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) reluctantly asks Logan to help with a mounting international diplomatic crisis. FOX will premiere 24 over a two-night, four-hour event beginning January 17 at 9p and January 18 at 8p.

British actor Ian McKellen is set to star in a 30m mockumentary television series The Academy, which is currently being pitched to UK and US broadcasters by DLT Entertainment, reports Variety. McKellen will portray his fictional brother, Murray McKellen, headmaster of a run-down drama school that is trying to get new funding through a documentary on the school. Peter Hinton is writing and directing while Humphrey Barclay is producing. Production on six half-hour episodes has begun. Other cast members include Jonathan Hyde, Sylvester McCoy and Frances Barber. UK-based 2act Productions is co-producing with DLT Entertainment.

ABC committed to two more episodes of Shark Tank, taking the total number of unaired episodes to five. These two additional episodes will be produced using existing footage. The air date for these five episodes has not been determined by ABC and the network has not confirmed a second season of the reality series.

Executive producer duo Ian Sander and Kim Moses (CBS’ Ghost Whisperer) have three drama projects in the works for ABC, cites Variety. As part of Sander’s and Moses’ overall deal with ABC Studios, the married pair’s projects all contain strong female leads sporting diverse occupations.

  • Jane and Dick is a legal drama set in an all-female law firm with the lead role being a woman on the verge of inheriting her father’s firm and marrying her childhood sweetheart. Jennifer Weiner and Michael Reisz are co-writing the pilot.
  • Police Surgeon, set in Chicago, is about a female cop who is also a surgeon. Lance Gentile (ER, Third Watch) is penning the script.
  • Ghost World, based on Sander and Moses’ interest in the paranormal, is about a male ghost who helps an ambitious female homicide detective in New York City solve cases in an effort to find clues about his own life and death. Feature film writer Daniel Taplitz is writing.

Another new face will soon be seen on USA Network’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent, as Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio joins the show’s ninth season as the new captain of the Major Case Squad. Mastrantonio’s character has a working-class background and succeeds Capt. Danny Ross (Eric Bogosian).

NBC has a drama project on the docket from the feature writing/directing team of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, reports THR. The 60m project titled Zeroes is about a group of guys called in to help during the last hour of a crisis situation. Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun are producing; Neveldine and Taylor will write the script and direct the potential pilot.

NBA TV added two-time NBA Champ Brent Barry as an Announcer for the 2009-2010 season. Barry will be an analyst for the network’s live studio show, NBA GameTime in addition to contributing to The Jump on NBA.com.

Correction: In yesterday’s edition, we inadvertently mentioned the wrong title for Bob Marra. Bob was tapped as VP/General Sales Manager at WNYW and WWOR in New York. Lew Leone continues to be the station’s VP/GM. We regret this error and the inconvenience it has caused.

WGN America appointed David Rotem as SVP/Sales, a position he began as of yesterday. Based in New York, David will report to Julio Marenghi, EVP/Sales and Distribution.

Kevin Libkin advanced to Team Sales Manager with Continental Television Sales, a unit of Katz Television Group. Kevin will supervise the company’s Olympic team in Chicago.
