Good morning, it’s Tuesday, November 25, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Online video network Blip.tv added support for the iPhone enabling users to view blip videos directly from their phones. Blip.tv’s new embed code now allows show creators to utilize the same embeddable player code they use for delivering videos to desktop PCs. This opens up the hottest new video platform for independent producers who go reach beyond bite size clips. Outside of Apple’s integration with YouTube, distributing web video shows to the iPhone has been impossible because the platform still doesn’t support Adobe’s Flash format.
The production arm of Warner Home Video – Warner Premiere – will produce a series of original live action webisodes with top-shelf Hollywood director Bryan Singer, reports THR. The two parties are in talks to develop the cyberpunk sci-fi thriller “H+,” which picks up after a terrorist fries the brains of a segment of the population “jacking” into the net.
Fox Interactive Media’s gaming-themed IGN.com announced a series of production and distribution agreements with nearly a dozen publishers to distribute original IGN video productions across their sites including Black20 Digital Studios, Machinima.com, CollegeHumor, ScrewAttack.com, g-NET and Comedy.com.
Knowledge Adventure is partnering with Unity Technologies to bring its kid-targeted 3D Virtual World to multiple digital platforms. Knowledge Adventure’s flagship gaming products sold under its JumpStart and Math Blaster brands will soon be available online and via the iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac, Wii, and Wii Ware.

Fox Broadcasting has agreed to contribute programming to IdeaCast‘s Airline TV network available to passengers on Continental, Frontier and JetBlue Airlines.
Online entertainment portal No Good TV christened its own new television production arm with the 8-part VH1 Classic One Hit Wonders. Hosted by NGTV’s own Carrie Keagan, the show re-imagines the well-worn countdown format with irreverent touches, high-end animation and innovative visual effects. VH1 Classic will premiere two new episodes each night beginning Dec. 1.
London-based TwoFour division Digital Bridge is getting ready to launch an online soap targeting working moms. Appearing on social networking site Mumspower.com, 10-minute episodes of “Heart & Soul” follow the trials and tribulations of a quartet of mothers. The site will turn to the audience to recruit a fifth Mom for the show.
Ziggity Zoom also added to the increasingly crowded Mommy blog space with Mommie911.com celebrating unsung maternal heroes.
Social music service imeem launched a mobile advertising platform offering brands the opportunity to connect with mobile consumers through imeem’s Android application. Kia Motors America is the first brand advertiser to avail itself of the platform, promoting its new compact SUV the Kia Soul launching in the U.S. next spring.
Web 2.0 tools such as Facebook widgets and iPhone apps will help keep online shopping afloat this holiday season according to new reports from Deloitte, Shop.org and WorkLight.
Video online and on mobile devices remain additive to the overall pie as total viewing hours continue to rise across all available platforms, according to Nielsen‘s Q3 A2/M2 report. Television remained the dominant choice for video consumption as viewers watched more than 142 hours/month – 5 hours more than last year. The amount of hours audiences spent watching timeshifted TV rose by 34% year-over-year as DVR penetration increased to 27%. Major online events such as the Olympics, Major League baseball and political conventions contributed dramatically to the growth of online video usage.

Dish Network signed on with Rentrak to measure click-stream data on its DVR set top boxes. Rentrak’s TV Essentials reporting system measures anonymous audience viewing patterns including second-by-second TV programming and advertising information.
The leading text messaging market in the U.S. is, you guessed it, El Paso? That’s according to a new study from Scarborough Research, which found that 57% of those 18 years or older in the Texas border town used mobile phones to send text messages compared to 48% nationally. Other leading markets for text messaging include Salt Lake City, Dallas and Memphis.
Apple released the latest iPhone operating system update adding a few important new features including remote podcasting download capabilities via Wi-Fi or 3G as well as improvements to the Google Maps app. (Google Street View is now accessible from the phone.) IPhone 2.2 also fixes a lingering security flaw that allowed anyone with access to your phone to bypass the password screen to view contacts, emails, etc.
CNET is ready with its annual Holiday Gift Guide featuring more than 200 hand-picked techy product recommendations.
How’s this for a natural fit: MMO gaming-themed drama The Guild has signed an exclusive deal with Microsoft to begin distributing season 2 of the show today across the MSN, Zune and Xbox 360 Live Marketplace platforms – the latter in HD format. Both parties will share in sponsorship revenue from Sprint with new episodes appearing each Tuesday. Finding audiences and sponsors for online video is all about building a community and finding a copasetic brand that audience may find interesting. Guild creator and star Felicia Day, herself a huge online gamer, has been very adept at reaching out to gaming geeks at confabs like ComiCon, Blizzcon and South by Southwest and keeping them up to date via Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other services. They even kept the show going early on by sending donations in via PayPal. Racking up 10 million+ aggregate views is impressive but not as valuable to advertisers as being able to deliver a loyal audience of like-minded folks, particularly when they’re hard-to-reach 18-24 year old males.
Clarification: Here’s a little more context regarding the debut YouTube Live. The 2008 edition of Live Earth did have 10 million total online views earlier this year, but simultaneous online views peaked about 287,000 – up from 237k last year. Now YouTube’s 700,000 simultaneous views seem pretty impressive in terms of scalability. The concert continues to rack up on demand views, according to one of the event’s producers Matthew Mills – exceeding over 3 million views during the past 36 hours. “We also saw a 7:1 ratio between the A (700 Kbps) and B (400 Kbps) streams,” says Matthew, indicating that YouTube users are connecting at higher bitrates than other Akamai customers.
