On New Year’s Day, VH1 introduces a new weekly program Friday Night Alrightshowcasing top rock and pop music concerts in hi-def from around the globe. Beginning January 1 at 11p and hosted by Jim Shearer, the first Friday Night Alright episode features Pink’s “Funhouse” tour. Future performers highlighted in the series include U2, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson, Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift, The Killers, Coldplay and Katy Perry.
WE tv reupped its original wedding-themed series Platinum Weddings for a fourth season, opening January 3 with two back-to-back episodes at 9p. With ten all-new 30m episodes, Platinum Weddings will air as part of the network’s WE tv Wedding Sunday programming block. During the new season, more extravagant weddings will be featured including the nuptials of Black Eyed Peas’ lead singer Fergie and the daughter of baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. The series is produced for WE tv by Film Garden.
USA Network renewed its crime comedy Psych for a fifth season, giving the series a 16-episode order. The second half of Psych’s fourth season returns in January with the fifth season episodes premiering next summer. Universal Cable Productions produces the series.
When Oxygen premieres a new fourth season of Bad Girls Club on December 1 at 10p, the network will also launch the real time destination www.OxygenLive.com, designed to engage fans of the show via live chats, through Facebook and Twitter and more. OxygenLive “Bad Girls Club Edition” will be available each Tuesday at 10p during the season coinciding with new episode launches.
TV personality/host Regis Philbin is taking a leave of absence from his ABC daytime talk show Live with Regis and Kelly. Philbin, who is 78, will have hip replacement surgery next Tuesday and stated on his show yesterday he will “be back next year.” No word as of yet who will fill-in for Philbin during his time away.
Long-time National Public Radio newscaster Carl Kasell will retire from his position as of December 30, 2009. Kasell, born in 1934, joined the network in 1975 and later in 1979 became a full-time newscaster for Morning Edition. Kasell will continue as official judge and scorekeeper on the weekly quiz show Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!
ABC’s telecast of the 2009 American Music Awards Sunday night from 8-11p drew in the largest audience since 2002 and its best A18-49 rating since 2004. The awards show delivered a 5.5 rating and 13 share among A18-49 as well as 14.2 million total viewers.
National Geographic Channel’s Second Annual Expedition Week, with seven episodes airing from November 15-21, reached 27.4 million total viewers and averaged a 0.4 primetime rating among A25-54. These figures represent 6.2 million more total viewers versus last year and a +38% increase in the A25-54 rating over 2008.
HISTORY’S five consecutive night series WWII in HD which aired November 15-19 averaged 2.4 million total viewers; 970,000 A25-54; and 840,000 A18-49 viewers.
Create TV, featuring lifestyle series from public television, has four new series joining its December schedule:
- OpenRoad – Travel series featuring journalist/environmentalist Doug McConnell as he explores the American West. Produced by Convergence Media Productions, presented by KQED and distributed by American Public Television; premieres December 1.
- The Woodwright’s Shop – Host Roy Underhill creates classic heirloom pieces in this woodworking series. Produced and presented by UNC-TV and distributed by PBS; premieres December 1.
- The Winemakers – Reality competition series follows 12 men and women from different backgrounds as they try to create and launch their own wine labels. Produced by Doc City Productions, presented by South Carolina ETV and distributed by American Public Television; premieres December 10.
- Gourmet’s Adventures With Ruth – Series follows food writer Ruth Riechl as she travels the world visiting cooking schools and experiences local foods and customs. Presented by WGBH Boston and distributed by American Public Television; premieres December 23.
- Create TV also announced season two of Cook’s Country from America’s Test Kitchen debuts December 2 and season seven of Mexico – One Plate at a Time opens December 10.
Getting into the holiday spirit, ABC Family is hosting a World Record Elf Partywhere the network will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of Santa’s elves in a single location (excluding the North Pole, of course). The event will take place on December 7 from 12-2p at New York’s The Pond at Bryant Park. ABC Family will also promote their annual 25 Days of Christmas programming event and its new original holiday movie Santa Baby 2: Christmas Maybe starring Jenny McCarthy and Dean McDermott, who will both be present to help corral more than 250 elves to set the world record. New Yorkers, adults and kids alike, who wish to participate can show up and don an official elf costume approved by Guinness World Records and handed out by the network. Prizes will also be part of the occasion. Santa Baby 2: Christmas Maybe premieres December 13 at 8p on ABC Family.
TV Guide Network will air the one-hour North American debut of I Dreamed a Dream: The Susan Boyle Story on December 13 at 8p. The special also airs in the UK on ITV, documenting the rise of Boyle’s fame from rural Scotland to worldwide notoriety after appearing on Britain’s Got Talent show. I Dreamed a Dream is a co-production of talkbackTHAMES, the UK production company owned by FremantleMedia and Simon Cowell’s Syco TV.
Horizon Media was awarded all media planning and buying for Crown Importsencompassing the brands Corona Extra, Modelo Especial, Corona Light, Negra Modelo, Pacifico, St. Pauli Girl and Tsingtao. Starting this month, the Crown Imports business will be managed from Horizon’s Los Angeles office.
First-run syndicated court series Judge Jeanine Pirro was renewed by Fox Television Stations (FTS) for the upcoming 2010-2011 season, marking the show’s third season on television and second in syndication. Judge Jeanine Pirro from Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution and Telepictures Productions was picked up by FTS’ nine duopoly markets including New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago, where the show originates, and the FOX O&Os in Boston and Baltimore.
Sportsman Channel will launch in Houston starting December 1 via Comcast’s Digital Preferred service.
MTV Networks International (MTVNI), a unit of Viacom Inc. is launching MTV in the Czech Republic and Slovakia this Sunday evening. MTVNI along with TV Nova, part of Central European Media Enterprises Ltd announced the channel’s 24-hour programming lineup including music videos, and such series as The City and Nitro Circus among others. MTV is the first MTVNI service to be localized in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and will be available to nearly 1.5 million households via cable, satellite and IPTV platforms.
truTV renewed the original series All Worked Up and is prepping for 13 new episodes to debut this spring. The series highlights first-person stories about people in stressful professions, from property repossessors to those delivering court papers, and everything in between. All Worked Up is produced by RDF USA.
TLC is expanding its culinary horizons by ordering the new series Craving Comfort (wt) hosted by two-time James Beard Award-winning chef Art Smith. True Entertainment is producing the series with eight half-hour episodes where cameras follow Smith as he seeks out comfort foods people crave. Each episode will spotlight a specific dish such as fried chicken or apple pie, unveiling three different versions of the favorite food. Chef Smith is also a best-selling cookbook author and continues his role as specialty chef to Oprah Winfrey as well as operates two restaurants, Table Fifty-Two located on the Florida-Georgia border and the newly opened Art and Soul in Washington, D.C.
ABC’s freshman sitcom Cougar Town has put a hold on further production in order for star Courteney Cox to manage a “private family matter.” Three completed new episodes are yet to air this Wednesday, December 9 and January 6 surrounding an already-scheduled Thanksgiving holiday break. The show is about half-way through its 22-episode order and is expected to pick up filming again November 30.
Busy Oprah Winfrey has another new project on the docket as her Harpo Filmsbanner inked a deal with HBO on a provocatively-themed 60m series pilot, citesVariety. The plot centers on a woman who flees her perfect marriage and children in Santa Monica, choosing to indulge her secret fantasies and desires in L.A. Erin Cressida Wilson will write the untitled pilot and executive produce; Winfrey and Harpo Films’ president Kate Forte will also executive produce.
Nick Lachey will host NBC’s a cappella singing competition series The Sing-Off. The show, airing over four nights and eight hours debuts December 14 at 8p and also on December 15 and 16 at 8p, concluding on December 21 at 8p.
Media veteran Jim Gabbert returns as the permanent host of the weekly seriesRetro Night on KOFY-TV in San Francisco. Gabbert is the former owner of KOFY who sold the station to Granite Broadcasting in 1998. Retro Night airs from 8-10p on Sundays showcasing such classic TV shows as Happy Days, Mork and Mindy and The Monkees among others. No word if any dogs will be featured on the show. Welcome back Jim!
Casting Call: Minneapolis Production Co. is seeking an experienced family therapist/counselor who has a big personality to host a new TV series for a major cable network. The ideal candidate must be licensed, comfortable on camera and be a skilled professional. On-camera experience is not necessary. The pilot will be shot in Minneapolis early in 2010 and the production company will fly the right candidate in for the shoot. Friday A18-49 Analysis: ABC and CBS shared the #1 berth Friday night with both delivering a 1.9/6 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ Ghost Whisperer won with a 2.0/7 followed by ABC’s movie at 1.7/6. ABC’s Shrek movie topped at 9p with a 2.1/7 while CBS’ Medium trailed in second at 1.9/6. ABC also came in first through 10p, though narrowly, with 20/20 at 1.8/6 with CBS’ Numb3rs next at 1.7/5.

Outdoor Channel Holdings, Inc., parent company of Outdoor TV upped Christy Benson to Regional Director/Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Midwest Region. Christy will be in charge of securing additional carriage in addition to marketing and promotion efforts for distributors in fourteen Midwest states. Christy will continue to be based in Temecula, CA, reporting to Daniel Soane, VP/Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Central Division and Emerging Media.
Rick Shane was tapped as CFO at Electric Entertainment to manage finance and accounting activities for the company’s production and distribution operations.
NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution promoted Donna Mills toSVP/Marketing, Communications and Affiliate Relations. Donna will now manage communications activities and continue to develop and execute marketing strategies, national promotions and advertising campaigns on behalf of the unit’s first-run and off-network broadcast syndication programming. She will also offer marketing support for the division’s advertiser, cable, airline, Canadian distribution and station sales units. Based in New York, Donna reports to Barry Wallach, President, NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution. Congratulations Donna!
Alexis Rouse was appointed VP/Communications at NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution where she heads all corporate communications efforts for the group as well as publicity activities for first-run and off-net syndicated series and NBCU programming sold in Canada. Alexis is based in Los Angeles and reports to Donna Mills. Well done Alexis!
CBS Corporation hired Dan Harrison as SVP/Strategic Development, effective January 4. In this newly established position, Dan will help the development of new business models throughout CBS’ operations. Additionally, Dan will work with senior management to develop the strategic route of CBS involving new technology and emerging distribution channels. Dan joins CBS from NBC Universal Cable where he served as SVP/Emerging Networks.
