Nearly 300 CBS News newswriters who are members of the WGAE and WGAW voted 81% in favor to authorize a strike against CBS which gives the WGAE and WGAW the trump card to call a strike at any time. The special election took place last week in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C. WGA-CBS members who work nationally or locally for television and radio in these markets have been functioning under an expired contract since April 2, 2005 and minus pay increases since April 2004.

Donald Trump is back on NBC with The Celebrity Apprentice which debuts January 3 at 9p. This seventh version of The Apprentice will feature 14 celebrities competing in business-related challenges in New York City, but instead of hoping to make Donald Trump their boss, they will raise money for charity.  Participating celebrities include Trace Adkins, Carol Alt, Stephen Baldwin, Nadia Comaneci, Tiffany Fallon, Jennie Finch, Nely Galan, Marilu Henner, Lennox Lewis, Piers Morgan, Omarosa, Tito Ortiz, Vincent Pastore and Gene Simmons. The show is produced by Mark Burnett Productions in association with Trump Productions LLC.

SOAPnet is getting into the movies with its purchase of a 12-film package from Disney ABC Domestic Television, scheduled to air Sundays at 10p starting December 2. The programming move is to target new viewers and expand the SOAPnet brand. Some of the theatrical titles from The Walt Disney Studios include Miramax Films’ Deception, Full Frontal, Kiss of Fire and Tangled. Other titles include theatrical releases from Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures and made-for-television movies making their basic cable premieres.

It seems the Red Hot Chili Peppers are not fans of Showtime‘s series Californication, and in fact have filed suit against the network alleging for unfair competition, dilution of the value of the name and unjust enrichment.  It seems Californication is the name of an album the band produced in 1999. In a statement released by the band’s lead singer Anthony Kiedis, he said, “Californication is the signature CD, video and song of the band’s career, and for some TV show to come along and steal our identity is not right.”  The suit names Showtime as well as Twilight Time Films, Aggressive Mediocrity, Inc., and creator/executive producer Tom Kapinos, as co-defendants. 

You may know him best as Mr. Whipple, the grocer who insisted we don’t “squeeze the Charmin'”.  Dick Wilson, at the age of 91, passed away yesterday of natural causes.  Wilson was in more than 500 Charmin commercials between 1964 and 1985, and came out of “retirement” to do a couple more spots in 1999.  Wilson was also an actor who appeared several times in guest roles on Bewitched, Hogan’s Heroes and The Bob Newhart Show, among others. 

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

MTV will put on the dance moves as the network ordered a new reality competition series Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew (wt) from Warner Horizon Television. The live weekly show is slated to premiere in first quarter 2008. Shot in Los Angeles, top hip-hop dance crews with face off each week to compete to be the ultimate winning crew, gain a cash prize and touring contract. Open casting calls are scheduled for December 4 in Atlanta; December 6 in Chicago; December 8 in New York; and December 11 in L.A. Times and locations can be found at MTV.com or email

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Jonathan LaConti moves up to VP/Ad Sales for FINE LIVING TV Network. Jonathan, who has been with Scripps Networks since 2002 as AE in national ad sales, will handle all national ad sales efforts for FINE LIVING.
 
A&E Network hired Stephen Harris as Director/Nonfiction and Alternative Programming to oversee development and production of nonfiction, alternative and reality series for the network. Coming from TLC where he was Supervising Producer, Stephen will report to Scott Lonker, VP/Nonfiction and Alternative Programming, A&E.
 
Turner Sports elevated Steve Fiorello to Coordinating Director and Renardo Lowe to Senior Director/Remotes. Steve’s new responsibilities will have him manage the look, feel and presentation of linear studio and remote shows in addition to new media live shows. He will continue to direct studio shows for the NBA, NASCAR, MLB and golf. Renardo will be the main contact for remotes with the implementation of new looks, cameras and technology. He will retain his directing duties of the NBA on TNT and the MLB Postseason.
 
IdeaCast Inc., provider of television programming and advertising to fitness centers and health clubs in the U.S., named Ki Punwar as VP/Western Region Sales. Ki will head the company’s new Los Angeles office and work to grow advertising sales and partnerships with national advertisers and agencies on the West Coast. He begins in this position immediately and reports to Bob Shaw, SVP/National Sales.
 
Andrew Jackson advanced to SVP/Marketing with BBC Worldwide Americas up from VP/Marketing at BBC America. In his new position, Andrew will continue to manage the on and off-air marketing for BBC America and will also develop partners in other businesses to support complementary marketing campaigns.
 
Entertainment Media Works (EMW) appointed Steven Rosenberg as CEO. A media executive for more than 25 years in the U.S. and international markets, Steven most recently was with HBO for 14 years as President/HBO International and EVP/HBO. Now at EMW, Steven will spur the continuing development of the company’s core business by expanding advertising and e-commerce opportunities for retailers and brands.
 
TLC tapped Edward Sabin as COO to lead the overall business strategy of the network, to work with ad sales, finance, business/legal affairs, affiliate sales and international. In addition, Edward will be charged with digital and business development. He will report to Angela Shapiro-Mathes, President/GM of TLC.
 
Grace Wu will slide into the position of SVP/Casting at Universal Media Studios. Previously, Grace was SVP/Casting with NBC Entertainment. In her new role, she will manage all casting for the studio’s scripted programs for networks and cable, reporting to Katherine Pope, President. Furthermore, Universal Media Studios added Teri Fiddleman as Director/Casting where she will report to Grace Wu.
 
NBC upped Steven O’Neill to SVP/Casting with NBC Entertainment where he will report to Marc Hirschfeld, EVP/Casting, NBC Entertainment. Steven has been VP/Casting with Universal Media Studios on the West Coast since June 2006.

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX won Sunday night with 5.3/13 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX took the early lead at 7p with its NFL Overrun/The OT averaging a 6.3/17, and again at 8p as The Simpsons/King of the Hill combo delivered a 4.8/11. NBC’s NFL game led at 9p with 5.5/12, just a bit ahead of the American Music Awards on ABC at 5.3/12. Then the AMA on ABC topped the chart at 10p with a 4.8/12.
