Disney Channel and ESPN Media Networks are joining with DISH Network to launch two new interactive TV applications, Disney Channel Interactive TV, aimed at kids/tweens, and ESPN Interactive Zone for sports fans. Available to 12+ million DISH subscribers who receive interactive TV service, Disney Channel Interactive TV application enables DISH Network subscribers to set digital video recorder timers for featured Disney Channel programs, obtain show information from the ticker on the main menu and interact with show-related content (e.g. games).
With holiday shopping upon us and consumers unsure about what toys are safe for their kids, given the recent rash of recalls and problems, the Toy Industry Association has smartly gone on the offensive and launched two new toy safety resources, a website and toll free hotline. The website, toyinfo.org, offers safety tips and insights from consumer safety experts as well as current information on all recalled toys. The toll-free number (1-888-884-TOYS) is a 24/7 center for consumers with any questions regarding specific products or issues relating to toy safety. TIA is a not-for-profit trade association.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Kabillion partners with Crazy Pet, LLC, US-based kid-centric interactive entertainment/educational licensing company, to launch Crazy Pet, a microsite, with the goal of promoting what kids learn from caring from family pets through Crazy Pet characters and activities. In addition to participating on Kabillion’s VOD and online broadband (Kabillion.com) channels, Crazy Pets will also provide interstitial programming featuring live-action joke videos, animated shorts and tips for appropriate, and of course fun, pet care and training. How To Hook Up Your Home Theater, a new Disney 2D animated short staring Goofy, is scheduled to open in front of National Treasure: Book of Secrets, a decidedly live-action movie, on December 21, 2007, per AWN.com. The new Goofy short, directed by Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers, is based on the How To Goofy animated short films that were popular in the 1940s and 50s, and which were directed by jack Kinney and animated by John Sibley.
Dear America, the live-action series of TV specials, will be released on DVD under a new deal between Scholastic Media and Genius Products. Based on Scholastic’s Dear America book series, which recounting dramatic moments in history through the eyes of girls, the TV specials originally ran on HBO Family, and were initially available on VHS via Scholastic book Clubs and Book Fairs.
VIZ Media has inked a deal with Direct2Drive, IGN Entertainment’s digital retail store, to make the anime series Naruto available for digital download, on a download-to-own in the US. Episodes of the series are debuting sequentially beginning ($1.99/per episode); the first 25 episodes are available now via www.direct2drive.com.
Vivendi Games Mobile launches the 2008 edition of Surviving High School. The game is developed by Vivendi Games Mobile’s Centerscore and is now available for mobile phones in North America. To support the new release, Vivendi Games Mobile is offering Surviving High School-branded activities and extras via Facebook and MySpace.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Don’t get upset if a kid or anyone else suggests you Get Munked, it is part of a 20th Century Fox promotional effort for the feature film Alvin and The Chipmunks, which opens from December 17, 2007. To that end, Fox has launched Munk Yourself ( www.munkyourself.com ), created by Telescope, Inc., an interactive site where you can become the above-average chipmunk by recording a unique voice message, in the audio style of Alvin, Simon and Theodore, as well as build a chipmunk avatar. Using technology from Oddcast, the website invites users to record their own voice via mic and by phone (US only), or use text-to-speech to create a computer-generated message. Visitors can then download their recording to their computers, or send their ‘munked message’ via email to friends and family. Additionally, as part of the Get Munked promotion, Telescope, Inc. has developed a way to offer free Chipmunk mobile voicetones. This just might be better than … hmm, well lots of things I just can’t think of them.
Marvel Entertainment awards Segal Licensing as the new licensing representative in Canada, as part of Marvel’s initiative to grow its brand in the market. Looking to expand current licensee relationships and deals, Segal will oversee all sales, retail, merchandising and marketing of the Marvel brand across Canada. Marvel’s upcoming live-action feature films, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, are schedule for release in summer 2008.
In other Naruto news, VIZ Media teams with Trans World Entertainment Corp., a specialty music and video retailer, to launch a multi-platform holiday retail campaign (web, print, broadcast, in-store signage etc.) to support the three-disc Deluxe Edition DVD release of Naruto The Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow. As part of the promotion, current subscribers of the f.y.e. and Suncoast Backstage Pass, will receive a audio reminder featuring a special message from Naruto himself, recorded by Maile Flanagan, who plays Naruto in the animated TV series, including details about the new Deluxe Edition DVD release (rated T for Teens). The release also features a Naruto short, Hidden Leaf Village Grand Sports Festival, interviews with the original Japanese cast, a word from series creator Masashi Kishimoto, movie trailers and so on.
Two new Doodlebops releases are set before years end. The Doodlebops holiday song, Everybody Singing will be available via iTunes from November 27, 2007. Meanwhile, Doodlebops musical toys, produced by iToys, Inc., will be available at retail in North America for holiday 2007. Additionally, this month marks the release of the new DVD, Happy Doodle Holidays, which is distributed by Lionsgate. In the US, Doodlebops TV series runs on Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney block.

Ms. Russell Arons is named VP/Marketing, EA Casual Entertainment Label. In her role as the head of marketing for the Label, Arons is responsible for the global marketing strategy of the Casual Entertainment franchises (e.g. Harry Potter, Boogie, Smarty Pants, EA Playground, and future IP), evaluating future business opportunities, PR and Consumer Research. She previously served as VP/Marketing, InfoSpace, as well for Mattel as VP and GM of the Barbie toy business and as its VP/Entertainment Male Action toy business.
Gary Krakower has been appointed SVP/Business Development North America, HIT Entertainment. Based in NYC, Krakower will focus his efforts on growing the live events, theme parks and attractions initiatives for the company. Most recently, he was VP/International Licensing and Merchandising, Twentieth Century Fox.
