Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 17, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

There is discontent among Carly and Sam in Nickelodeon‘s new TV movie iQuit iCarly, which will premiere on the network Saturday, December 5 at 8p.  Leading into the iQuit iCarly is a three-hour marathon of iCarly episodes selected by viewers via an online poll.  Fans can cast their votes for their favorite Carly and Sam friendship episodes of iCarly at Nick.com beginning November 28.  The iCarly show page will offer a sneak peek of iQuit iCarly, photos and the movie-themed game, which bows November 30.  Additionally, another new game based on the movie, Watermelon Pirate Attack!, will be available on iCarly.com, from December 5.  A sneak peek of iQuit iCarly will also be on Mobile On Demand.  The day after its on-air premiere, the movie will be available on various download-to-own stores, including iTunes.


MTV Networks International (MTVNI) inks new program sales deals for Nickelodeon shows across Asia, Europe and Latin America:

  • TVB (Hong Kong) picks up Avatar. The series has already been picked up by ATV (Hong Kong), thus marking the first time that a series will air on both of the territory’s free-to-air broadcasters
  • Fox in Portugal picks up the first to seasons of The Ren and Stimpy Show; NRK (Norway) licenses Dora the Explorer; Canal + (France) takes Back at the Barnyard, while Television 3 (France) picks up Tak & the Power of Juju.
  • MTVNI inks its very first HD deal for the first two seasons of iCarly with Globo TV (Brazil).  Elsewhere in Latin America, deals for Nickelodeon branded blocks have been completed with Teleamazonas (Ecuador) and a renewal with Antena Latina (Dominican Republic), which will include Back at the Barnyard, Fairly Odd Parents, Drake & Josh and SpongeBob SquarePants.  In addition, a new package deal has been finalized with Teletica (Costa Rica) with programs including the preschool series Ni Hao Kai-Lan and the animated series, Mighty B!, airing for the first time.

Comarex, a sales and distribution company, inks a deal with Studio100 for the first season of the tween-targeted soap opera The House of Anubis (57×12).  Produced by Studio100, The House of Anubis is scheduled to premiere on Mexican free to air station Channel 11 on November 23, 2009.  The series currently in its third season, with the fourth season in the can, The House of Anubis continues to air on Nickelodeon Holland where it very popular.  A German version of this series began airing on Nick Germany in September 2009 and on VIVA in October 2009.  The House of Anubis revolves around a group of teens that live together in a boarding house during high school.  The arrival of a new student leads to learning about the mysterious house.

Disney’s Buena Vista International acquires the exclusive broadcast rights to DQ Entertainment International‘s new 3D animated TV adaptation of The Jungle Book (52×11) in 29 countries across the Indian Sub-Continent and South East Asia (e.g. South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan).  The new updated adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s book The Jungle Book includes both a series (52×11) and special (1×60), produced by DQE with partners ZDF Enterprises and ZDF Broadcasting (Germany), ABC (Australia), NBC Universal (US) as ell as broadcasting and licensing partners TF1 Group (France) and Moonscoop (France).

Author Melissa de la Cruz inks a multi-book deal with Hyperion and Disney Book Group.  The author is best known for her young adult book series Blue Bloods

  • Disney-Hyperion, an imprint of Disney Book Group, acquires two books in a new series, Wolf Pact, as well as three companion books to de la Cruz’s Blue Bloods series. Wolf Pact, which is a werewolf story, will follow the adventures of Bliss Llewellyn, who is featured in the Blue Bloods novels, on her quest to find the legendary Hounds of Hell and convince them to join the Blue Blood vampires in their battle against the Silver Bloods.  The first book in the series is scheduled for publication in winter 2011.  Additionally in Blue Bloods news, Blue Bloods: Keys to the Repository, slated for summer 2010, will contain previously un-published short stories and an encyclopedia to the world of the Blue BloodsBlue Bloods: Bloody Valentine, a romantic novella, will be published in winter 2011, while Blue Bloods: The Graphic Novel is set for publication in summer 2011.  I’m guessing there must be a Blue Bloods movie deal coming.
  • Under the Hyperion pact, de la Cruz will pen her first two adult fantasy books that will revolve around the Beauchamp girls, who live in a fictional town and struggle to thwart their nemesis and restore things to their natural balance.  De la Cruz plans to include characters from her Blue Bloods books in these novels.  The first novel, Witches of East End, is slated for publication in spring 2011.


This week marks the release of the Harry Potter Spells app ( www.harrypotterspellsapp.com/), the first official Harry Potter iPhone game available at the App Store.  From Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, the app is based on the Harry Potter movies and features 14 spells that wizards-in-training can play with on their own or with others.  The app was developed in association with Mikoishi.

Imira Entertainment completes new license deals in Spain and Portugal for the live action tween-targeted series H2O: Just Add Water (52×26 and 2×90).  Signing on as licensing partners are: Enri 2000 (stationery); Prady Normapiel (toiletries); and Fournier (playing cards).  Recent deals for H2O also include Concentra (fashion dolls, dress accessories, electronic devices), JF Ramos (apparel) and Dracco (confectionery), Giochi Preziosi (back-to-school, collectables with Cife Spain) among others.

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) in Germany finalizes the extension of its deal with Panini Verlags for two year.  An array of branded books and magazines including a Dora the Explorer bi-monthly magazine and SpongeBob SquarePants story book, comic, soft cover coloring books, book of postcards, summer activity book and wall calendar, will be available across Austria, Germany and Switzerland beginning this winter.

Discovery Communications enters into a licensing deal with Infinity Headwear and Apparel for Animal Planet branded headwear and cold weather accessories for kids, young men/men, as well as kid’s bags.  The collection is slated to be available in 2010 and the kid’s hats/caps will feature embroidery and applique, with the winter hats including coordinating gloves, scarves and mittens.  The line will feature animal prints and graphics.  The North American deal was brokered for Animal Planet by its licensing agent, the Joester Loria Group.  A portion of the proceeds from the Infinity Headwear and Apparel products will benefit the principal partners of R.O.A.R (Reach Out. Act. Respond), Animal Planet’s national campaign that encourages people to take action and being a voice for animals.


Astral Media TVPlus appoints Lyne Nault as Sales Director.  Nault will head up the Toronto-based sales team for Astral Media TVPlus, which represents Astral Media’s 10 French TV stations in the Toronto market including Canal Vie, Canal D, VRAK.TV, Ztele, Historia, Series+, MusiquePlus, MusiMax, Teletoon and Teletoon Retro.  Nault joined Astral Media three years ago as National Account Executive.  She previously toiled in French TV for 17-years, and has served in sales positions for Alliance Atlantis, TQS, TVA and Radio-Canada.
