Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November  14, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. 

Warner Bros. Advanced Digital Services is making a common request come true, with the launch of Saturday Morning Forever.  Targeted to teens and tweens, Saturday Morning Forever ( www.SMF-TV.com ) is part of the new Hanna-Barbera.com and offers 2-hours of cartoons a week, comprised of about 80% classic Hanna-Barbera shorts and 20% new original content.  Programming featured on SMF-TV will include The Flintstones, The Jetsons and Yogi Bear.  Supporting the launch of SMF-TV is the Saturday Morning Forever Ultimate Prize Pack, a sweepstakes sponsored by Post Cereal and Sprint, which runs through March 21, 2007.  Additionally, several new interactive components have been added to the new Hanna-Barbera.com, including games, quizzes, polls, trivia contests, and sweepstakes.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Hilton Family of Hotels, which is comprised of ten Hilton hotel brands, has entered into a deal with kids book author/illustrator/co-producer Todd Parr to help get kids reading with an original book, by Parr, titled be hospitable, which is also the Hilton slogan.  Published by SupperTime Entertainment, the book provides simple examples of what being hospitable means, such as holding the door open, saying thank you and wishing someone good luck.  Hilton will also donate 10,000 copies of the book to the non-profit organizations Books for Kids Foundation and Reach Out and Read.  Parr’s preschool series, ToddWorld, airs around the world including here in the US weekday mornings on TLC and the Discovery Kids Channel ( www.toddworld.tv ).

Laugh Loud is a new co-branded TBS and Parker Brothers campaign, designed to promote the TBS “very funny” programming line-up as well as the adult-targeted Parker Brothers games Electronic Catch Phrase and Scattergories.  The promotional campaign will run throughout the holiday season with spots appearing on TBS and TBS.com, and through in-store branding at big toy and game retailers nationwide as well as a Laugh Loud point-of-purchase rebate program.  The on-air spots will feature scenes from some of the sitcoms that run on TBS that are also relevant to the Parker Brothers’ games.

Funimation Entertainment is set to release the new digitally re-mastered in hi-def and restored version of the anime series Dragon Ball Z, all 291 episodes, on DVD beginning in 2007.  The first of the Dragon Ball Z Season Sets include 39 episodes on five DVDs and is slated for release in the US on February 6, 2007.  The releases include the original Japanese score, which can be heard with either the Japanese or English language dialogue.  Other bonus content includes segments on the re-mastering of the series, revised English dialogue and a new audio mix.

Mattel Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release Polly Pocket, making her movie debut, in PollyWorld, a full-length animated direct-to-DVD movie, for holiday 2006.  The release will be supported by a full line of Polly Pocket toys based on PollyWorld including PollyWorld Rockin’ Theme Park Playset; the Lila Costume Cart; and the Lea Gift Shop.  PollyWorld is the second title jointly made-for-DVD release from Mattel Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment, under their multi-year and multi-picture marketing and distribution deal signed earlier this year.

Animation Collective the creator/animators of Kappa Mikey, the anime series which airs on Nickelodeon (Sundays, 11a) and Nicktoons Network (check local listings), will be offering a free downloadable Clip of the Week each Friday at the show website ( www.kappamikey.com ) as well as on iTunes.  Kappa Mikey (52 x 30 min) is MTV Networks’ first global acquisition.

Scope Seven, a media production and design company, has produced ZOOOOS, a series of preschool targeted interactive DVD game titles for Funrise Toy Corp’s ZOOOOS game platform.  The ZOOOOS system features brightly colored buttons that provide kids with easy one-touch options that correspond with ZOOOOS DVDs, which include games, puzzles, interactive video encyclopedias and storybooks and other educational activities.  ZOOOOS DVD titles include San Diego Zoo Animal Explorer, Thomas & Friends Ride the Rails, and Bob the Builder Can You Build It? among others. In addition to producing ZOOOOS on-screen content, Scope Seven also took part in the development and the licensing the proprietary technologies used in the platform.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

British Sky Broadcasting has made a number of senior management appointments.

  • Mike Darcey to become Sky’s new COO, he had been Sky’s Group Commercial and Strategy Director.  Prior to joining Sky in 1998, Darcey was an economic advisor for a number of industries primarily focusing on entertainment and telecommunications.
  • Brian Sullivan has been appointed Managing Director/Customer Group, responsible for heading marketing, product development and customer services teams.  Sullivan, who had been Sky’s Director/Product Strategy and Management, was key in Sky’s multi-product strategy including the launch of Sky+, multiroom, Sky HD and Sky Broadband.  He takes over the role from Jon Florsheim, CMO and Managing Director/Customer Group, who exits Sky after 12-ys to become CEO, Homeserve GB and an Executive Director of Homeserve plc.
  • Matthew Anderson has become Group Director/Communications and Brand Marketing, and will oversee brand marketing in addition to heading Sky’s publicity, corporate communications, public affairs, internal communications and corporate responsibility activities.
  • Didier Lebrat joins Sky as its first CTO, officially coming on board next month.  He will be responsible for the company’s Information Technology, Customer Technology, Network Infrastructure and Broadcast Platform teams.  Most recently Lebrat served as CTO, Vodafone Italy.

Come the end of this year Georges Leclere, SVP/International Outreach, The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will leave the organization, remaining available to the Academy as a consultant.  He will be nominated for election as an Academy Fellow at the November 20th Board Meeting.  Leclere joined the Academy as Executive Director in 1998.  Previously, Leclere served as Head of Television, The United Nations in NY, and as a journalist and news anchor on French TV networks ORTF, Antenne 2 and FR3.

RATINGS

Aye Captain!   SpongeBob SquarePants continues to deliver for Nickelodeon with a last week’s day long marathon, which began Thursday November 9 at 8p and ran through Friday, November 10.  The marathon delivered the network new all time high ratings with Total Viewers 2+, K2-11 and K6-11 in several time periods on Friday, November 10.  On Friday the marathon included the premiere of the special SpongeBob’s Best Day Ever, at 7:30p followed at 8p with the network debut of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.  On Thursday, during the Nick at Nite block (9-11p), the network delivered 1.8 million K2-11 and 1.2 million K6-11.  On Friday, from 63a-10p, Nick delivered an average of 2.5 million K2-11 and 1.5 million K6-11.
