Cynopsis

11/14/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 14, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC has given a full season order to Friday Night Lights, starring Kyle Chandler. Thus far this season the show has averaged a 2.7/7 among A18-49 and 6.7 million viewers overall.  There is also some speculation the show will be moved from its current berth of Tuesdays at 8p to an alternative time period and away from the 1st qtr 2007 return of American Idol.  NBC has said previously it would soon announce its full 1st qtr schedule.  Friday Night Lights is a production of Imagine Television, NBC Universal Television Studio and Film 44.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC:  Show Me the Money at 930p (special preview episode)
CBS:  3 LBS at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

FremantleMedia N.A. have shifted the distribution rights of Family Feud from Tribune Entertainment Co., over to Debmar-Mercury, in a multi-year deal, effective immediately.  With the distribution rights went the syndication barter sales for the series. Debmar-Mercury has already begun contacting stations regarding their Fall 2007 renewal of the strip series, which will then be in its 8th season.  Debmar-Mercury has not announced who will handle the syndication barter sales going forward.

CBS News is tweaking the nightly broadcast.  The Free Speech segment in the CBS Evening NEws with Katie Couric has been cut back to a 1 or 2 times a week, rather than 5x a week, and plans to include opinions from those whose opinions viewers may not already be familiar.  Opinions voiced thus far include Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Arianna Huffington.

Season two of Bravo’s docu-soap series The Real Housewives of Orange County will return on January 16 at 10p. The series from Evolution Film & Tape Inc. takes an inside view of the exclusive California gated-community lifestyle.

LIME premieres three new series this month:

  • Living Well With Oz Garcia – premieres today and features advice from lifestyle motivator, nutritional expert and best-selling author, Oz Garcia. The series has many multi-platform outlets including audio and video content available at lime.com, on-demand segments, Sirius Satellite Radio, podcasting and mobile.
  • Think Green is magazine-style show focusing on improving our environment.
  • The Insider’s Guide to Love shows how people fall in and out of love. This show is from the producer’s of The Insider’s Guide to Happiness.

Philip (Phil) R. Dixson, SVP/Managing Director of TeleVest Daytime Programs, died Friday due to complications from lung cancer at his home in Piermont, NY. For the last 26 years, Phil has worked on behalf of Procter & Gamble Productions, Inc., overseeing production of the daytime soaps As The World Turns and Guiding Light. Donations in Phil’s name can be made to United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 10956.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

VH1’s broadband channel VSPOT has launched a new syndicated player which updates its content automatically once a user makes a selection. The new player also has search and send-to-a-friend features. In addition, starting November 27, VSPOT will debut a new comedy series Home Purchasing Club that satirizes home shopping channels in eight 3-minute episodes.

The one-hour season finale of MTV’s Laguna Beach will air tomorrow evening at 10p. Afterwards, a post-show special will air online (LagunaBeach.mtv.com) with interactive elements including Q&A sessions between fans and cast and a performance by the Laguna Beach local band Open Air Stereo.

In2TV at www.aol.com/in2tv has launched its newest channel Secret Agent TV as a hub for classic spy-themed television series and movies such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Also debuting this month will be a limited run of the Christmas Channel beginning November 16 and airing through December, which will include cartoon and classic sitcom holiday specials and episodes.  Also added to the lineup this month, the Friends spin-off series Joey.

* PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT *

Showtime‘s newest project, Insatiable, about four families in a small town where just about everyone has an addiction of some sort, is in the final negotiation stages to bolster its cast.  In talks to join the show are Andie MacDowell, Andrea Martin and Lara Flynn Boyle, says Hollywood Reporter.  MacDowell’s character is addicting to shopping on e-Bay; Martin’s character’s husband is a gambling addict; and Boyle’s character likes to take things.

Gospel Music Channel has ordered eleven new half-hour episodes of Faith & Fame, the biographical series about gospel airing Monday-Friday at 730p. The additional episodes will begin airing next February, and will take the series up to 41 episodes in total. The series is produced by Tangible Vision based in Nashville.

Court TV will add to its lineup with an order of 13 half hour episodes of Til Death Do Us Part starring the filmmaker John Waters as the “Groom Reaper.”  Each episode focuses on a real murder committed by once blissfully happily married people.  THe show is looking at a 1st Qtr 2007 launch.   Note:  THe show will also debut in Canada on Global Television under the title Love You to Death.

NBC has ordered a script of Split Decision, a property presented at the New York TV Festival this fall, per Variety.  The 30m comedy project is based on a NYC downtown advertising agency who develop campaigns for larger corporate clients. This marks the first time a pilot presented at the Festival has been acquired by a broadcast network.  The project was created by Mary Egan Callahan who will serve as supervising producer; Joe Narcisco wrote the pilot and Bruce Hurwit directed.

TLC has announced its slate of three new series all set to debut in 2007, per Variety:

  • Mind Your Manners from City Lights TV is described as etiquette boot camp for us normal folks in everyday situations. TLC has ordered 10 episodes.
  • Family Surgeons from Idea Factory takes the American Chopper dynamic and applies it to a father/son doctors who specialize in gastric bypass surgery. A ten episode order was given to this show as well.
  • My First House from Authentic is a guide to making that first major purchase.  TLC has ordered an even dozen eps.  American Chopper, by the way, will migrate from Discovery Channel to TLC in first qtr 2007.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1851-Herman Melville published a novel entitled Moby-Dick, chronicling the voyage of a whaling ship Pequod. Though Melville’s novel was considered a flop at the time of its publication, it would later be regarded as one of the foremost classics of American literature. The novel opens with one of the most famous lines in American literature: “Call me Ismael.”

EMAIL TO THE EDITOR:

RE: Internships

As a professor I appreciate all the companies offering internships for students, but I would love to convince you to pay something, anything, to have these young people work for you. Yes they learn while working, but isn’t that true of your new employees, too? Don’t you offer them a salary? Even if you can’t manage minimum wage, just a small stipend for housing or meals would be welcome.

Let me suggest to you that it is not just for the students, but that it is in your own best interest to do this. I have had hundreds of students over the years looking for internships. One of the determining factors is whether a student can afford it. Surely a student will not pass up an “ideal” internship if it is unpaid, but if there are two offered, and one is paid, which is likely to attract more candidates? Companies offering paid internships can choose from a much larger pool. I might even suggest that some of our more qualified students end up in other areas that provide paid internships. And before you tell me they must not have been motivated enough to begin with, keep in mind that some of these students graduate college with tens of thousands of dollars of debt. Most students will have to give up part-time jobs to take an internship, only increasing their debt.

There’s much more I could say but I’ll stop here. Please give some thought to this. Thanks.

Dom Caristi, Associate Professor
