11/13/07

Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, November 13, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Three new series announced today – all unscripted (see below). Also two renewals – only one of those is scripted, Damages on FX.  As the writers strike continues, look for more unscripted series to hit the primetime schedule, including (but certainly not limited to):

  • Duel on ABC beginning December 17 and scheduled to air thru the 23rd at 8pm.  In this gamer, players have to bluff well to win.  Also coming to ABC, new seasons of Supernanny and Wife Swap.
  • On CBS – a midseason edition of Big Brother is planned as well as another season of Amazing Race and Survivor.  Also a couple of games – Million Dollar Password with Regis hosting, and Do You Trust Me with host Tucker Carlson.
  • NBC – American Gladiator with Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali hosting; Amnesia game with host Dennis Miller, and more episodes of 1 vs. 100 and Deal or No Deal.
  • You know American Idol is returning to Fox on January 15th, and you can expect more new eps of Hell’s Kitchen, 5th Grader and Don’t Forget the Lyrics.  Also look for game show The Moment of Truth to kick off on January 23rd.
  • CW will bring back more new America’s Next Top Model, Beauty and the Geek and Pussycat Dolls.

It’s gonna be a long strike.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The CW Network will debut Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants, the new one-hour mother/daughter competition series December 12 at 9p, following the season finale of America’s Next Top Model. The other seven episodes of Crowned will air Wednesdays at 8p starting December 19 through the finale on January 30. Judges for the series include Carson Kressley, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler and Cynthia Garrett.

SPORTSKOOL, the free On Demand sports network, introduces Magic Johnson Fundamentals series beginning December 18.  During the eight episodes, Magic will show off his basketball techniques and drills and he’ll be joined by other NBA All-Star players such as Rip Hamilton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Kenny Smith.

fuse introduces its new series Videos that Rocked the World, unveiling behind-the-scenes stories, interviews and footage surrounding the ten most influential and controversial music videos. The series will air over ten days starting November 26 at 10p, airing weeknights.

It’s just about that time to be thinking about your New Year’s Eve plans, and Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest are all set.  They’ll join together again this year to host the 36th edition of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, which starts at 10p, December 31 on ABC. Good to know some things never change.

Clarification:  Only CBS News writers are voting to authorize a strike this week (not ABC News writers too). The WGAE hopes to announce the results of that vote on November 19. CBS News writers contract covers 500 people in televisions and radio, both network and local in NY, Chicago, Washington DC and LA. And to clear up any lingering questions, NBC News writers are not aligned with WGAE, and Fox News writers are currently under contract.

WWOR-TV/My9 and the YES Network extended their agreement, keeping WWOR as the exclusive broadcast home of the New York Yankees for one more year through the end of the 2008 season. A total of 21 hi-def games will air on WWOR, which is owned by FOX Television Stations.

Raycom Media, Inc. will acquire Lincoln Financial Group’s television operations and Lincoln Financial Sports. The deal includes three television stations, WBTV/Charlotte, WWBT/Richmond and WCSC/Charleston and Lincoln Financial Sports which broadcasts live games across a network of more than 70 stations in the Southeast with its partnership with Raycom Sports for ACC and SEC football and basketball. Currently, Raycom owns or operates 42 television stations, which reaches 11.7% of U.S. television households in 18 states. The sports portion of the transaction is expected to be wrapped up by early next month, with the rest completed by second quarter 2008.

It’s Cynopsis Broadcast Calendar time!  We only have 2500, and they’re nearly all gone, so get in your requests right away.  If you don’t hear from us, you’ll get your calendars in the next 2-4 weeks.  If you do, it’s because your request came in after we’d already run out!  Maximum of 10 for any order.  To order your 2008 broadcast calendars, email your name, full mailing address and phone number, to Joanne Flamini at

with BCST CALENDAR in the subject line.  Please, no calls.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

E! Entertainment Television renewed the 30m reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians for a second season. The show, produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions and Bunim-Murray Productions, reveals the life of Kim Kardashian and her Hollywood family.

FX has ordered up two additional seasons for a total of 26 episodes of Damages starring Glenn Close, with production beginning in January.

Sewee Entertainment cut syndication deals for current partner/clients for the following projects:

  • Macy’s Holiday OTO – lighting of the Great Tree at Macy’s filmed in Atlanta on Thanksgiving night is cleared in more than 85% of the U.S. on stations from Tribune, CBS, Cox, Belo, Hubbard, Clear Channel, Lin, Hearst, Sunbeam and other stations groups. This year’s event will also be seen nationally via WGN Superstation. Hosted by ET’s Jann Carl, musical guests featured include Big & Rich, Chris Brown and more.
  • SurveyUSA – news service offering political and news polling for broadcast stations has been renewed on several stations in markets San Francisco, Seattle and Portland as well as new deals in Cleveland, Washington, D.C., Raleigh/Durham and Fresno.
  • Connect with Kids – content provider offering news, web and long-form programming for parents and teens has new deals on WPIX/New York, KYW-WPSG/Philadelphia, KGO/San Francisco, KCPQ-KMYQ/Seattle and more. In addition, Sewee Entertainment and Connect with Kids are selling a new three-hour E/I block to broadcasters for use on digital channels.

Correction:  A&E’s Under is from fox Television Studios (not 20th Century Fox TV as mentioned here yesterday).
