Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 6, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
As TV networks head into their spring ad brokering ritual known as the upfront, some digital strategies are being retooled to insure they deliver what really matters to the bottom line – appointment TV viewers. The CW raised eyebrows last month when it announced it would not stream the final 5 episodes of Gossip Girl; instead “watch and win” contests were devised to entice fans to watch the linear episodes in order to learn what they needed to win. The CW is planning additional motivational extensions for next season, according to AdAge, including text message plot hints and personalized messages from actors. Meanwhile, Fox enlisted market research firm Marketing Evolution to help articulate the message that TV advertising still drives purchasing decisions far better than other mediums, reports Mediaweek. The firm concludes that TV is still the lynchpin of a successful marketing campaign while other platforms remain “complementary.”
Then again other TV brands will be leading with their digital strategies this year. MTV will present a case study conducted by Harris Interactive and MauroNewMedia at its upfront presentation on Thursday, speaking to how consumer engagement with shows and brands increases with each platform a viewer is exposed to, reports Adweek.
To stand out from the crowd A&E has built an iPhone compatible broadband screener website in time for Emmy season, allowing ATAS members to view networking programming on the road.
Hubbard Media’s movie themed ReelzChannel is planning to launch a free VOD service in June, providing movie reviews and recommendations to promote its pay-per-view VOD and premium channels.
Multiplatform animation producer aniboom signed a quintet of online syndications deals to increase the exposure of its original content. Branded aniboom channels can now be found on DailyMotion, Metacafe, Veoh Networks and blip.tv, and more than 200 aniboom shorts are now indexed through video search engine Blinkx. The network also signed partnerships with MobiTV and Thumplay in the US and Buongiorno SpA, Cellfish, Jamster and Player X overseas to distribute bite-sized animated shorts on mobile platforms.
Another scalable online HD video start-up called Vusion shed its beta status and officially launched yesterday, competing with other high quality video streaming providers such as Move Networks and Brightcove. Island Def Jam Music will be its first paying customer, streaming music videos of artists such as Kanye West, Rihanna and Mariah Carey in 480p quality.
Christian online video sharing site GodTube shored up a righteous $30 million in funding from hedge fund GLG Partners, reports paidcontent.org.
One of the shortfalls of the current iPhone is that it doesn’t allow video to be stored. Check out the ad supported online app called Wixi, which stores photos, music and videos on a server then formats them for viewing on the iPhone. Premium subscribers who pay $6/month or $50/year are offered unlimited, ad-free storage.
Sprint is considering cutting its failing Nextel unit loose through a sale or a spinoff as it heads toward reconnecting with Clearwire to build a nationwide WiMax network, reports the WSJ. Nextel, which made its name by delivering a reliable calling service to business customers, has lost its relevance as other carriers have improved their own networks.
Yahoo‘s share price took it on the chin as investors responded to the failed Microsoft buy out, losing more than $6 billion in market value.
Just when we thought Disney’s MovieBeam digital movie set top boxes were relegated to paperweight status, the service may have one more incarnation left. The company has asked a bankruptcy court to sell what’s left of its VOD delivery service to Dar Capital Ltd. for $2.25 million, according to Dow Jones’ Daily Bankruptcy Review. Movie Gallery paid $10 million for MovieBeam last year then shuttered the service after less than 2,000 set-tops were sold.
The Interactive Advertising Bureau released its long-awaited Digital Video in-Stream Ad Format Guidelines to help provide a template for digital media firms to deploy, track and monetize non-linear ads. The goal is to develop common formatting and practices to make video ads more interchangeable between publishers and advertisers. Included are guidelines on overlay ads and companion ads agreed upon so far by some 145 video providers and ad firms. The IAB has even provided a handy dandy Glossary of Digital Video Terms. Social networking/Instant messaging site Meebo has introduced a new customizable bubble ad format. Advertisers can create customized background skins featuring video trailers, computer games or other content that can remain on users’ screens or forwarded to friends.
HDNet founder Mark Cuban asks and answers a long debated question in his latest Blog Maverick posting The Ala Carting of Video on the Net – Will it lead to disaster? Citing a new report from Craig Moffett of Bernstein Research, he describes the current model of offering expensively-produced video for free online as unsustainable – assuming today’s limited inventory and identical CPM’s to television – because it eliminates the ability of hit shows to help pay for less popular product.
Joe Doran has been chosen as founding CEO for social media analytics firm Media6 Degrees. Joe most recently served as GM of Advertising Strategy & Product Management for Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions.
David Justus has been named VP/Digital Media for New York’s WNBC, in charge of overseeing digital initiatives and managing multiplatform content distribution. He reports to Tom O’Brien, President and GM of the station.
Mark Keys has joined WWE as VP/Web Production, responsible for the day-to-day operation of WWE.com and overseeing design, editorial & video production. Mark’s most recent position was as Director, Development and Production for Mediaworks Consulting.

Audio at-retail ad company DMI Music & Media Networks appointed Michael Panebianco as VP/Advertiser Solutions. He will report to Joan Gerberding, SVP/Advertiser Solutions, who joined the company in March.
NBC News’ Learn division launched a cool new community site dubbed iCue, hoping to get kids more excited about keeping up with the news. An acronym for Immerse, Connect, Understand and Excel, iCue presents NBC News videos, photos, cartoons and a wealth of historical documents within interactive learning environments developed with the MIT Education Arcade. Teachers are encouraged to build games and other creative activities around the content.
