Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

05.05.09

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, May 5, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!  This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Several years ago, my father and I built a fence separating the front yard of the house from the back. The purpose of the fence was to keep our golden retriever, Harvey, from barking at the good people of Essex, Connecticut, who often walked the sidewalk adjacent to our house. We bought a book on outdoor construction projects and following each step carefully, we built a five-foot high wooden fence.

The fence had some small problems with it, none noticeable to the general public, but it did look like it was designed by Tim Burton. Nonetheless, the fence was functional, and we built it. My father and I took a great deal of pride in this fence until our lovable Harvey looked at the fence and in a single leap jumped over it and started barking at the small crowd of people who had gathered in our front yard to laugh at our poorly constructed barricade.

At this point my Dad said to me, “You are an expert at some things, and I am an expert at others, but neither of us is an expert in fence building.”  “Or in predicting the jumping capabilities of a golden retriever,” I replied.

From home renovation specialists to hair stylists to tax accounts, we hire experts every day. If a pipe bursts in a second story bathroom, we call a plumber. We do this because we know he is an expert and can solve the problem. Yet when it comes time to search for a job, most of us consider ourselves to be experts in writing resumes, but we are not.

With the unemployment rate expected to climb into the double digits, resume writing is a skill essential for job seekers. Resumes are not a summary of your previous work experience, they are written advertisements. Many executives have several versions of their resumes, highlighting specific parts of their work history as it relates to the jobs they are applying for. Unless you work in a very specific or niche field, you may want to seek out the advice of an expert, especially if you only have one version of your resume. In a less competitive economic environment, an average resume might get you an interview. But in a time where 700 candidates applied for a custodian job in an Ohio elementary school last month, your resume has to be among the very best.

Two years ago, when the economy was humming along, I don’t think I would have advised job hunters to seek out the services of a professional resume writer. But with the economy shedding over 700,000 payrolls in a month, folks need all the help they can get. They need an expert.

Next week: You have a good resume, now what?

Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage is a work in progress, designed with our readers in mind. We welcome your feedback and will try to incorporate any suggestions into our weekly coverage.  And if you have any specific questions or topics of particular interest you’d like our Experts to address, please let me know!  You can reach me – John Cox – directly at [email protected].

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~

FIVE THINGS YOU MUST INCLUDE IN YOUR RESUME

By Peter Roche

Every professional recruiter is trying to discover is this person (you) capable of delivering the kinds of results we need? Does this person (you) have similar experience, or at least experience that is relevant to our situation and needs? And will this person (you) fit in our culture, share our values, relate well with our people and customers?

So resumes need to be tailored to highlight how you can satisfy what it is that employers want in a new hire. This is expressing what you want in a job in terms of value you will provide to your new employer.

1. Evidence of your track record in delivering on, better yet, exceeding your goals

Especially in our current economic climate organizations want to hire people with a proven track record of producing results. While you will obviously include where you worked and when in your resume and what you educational qualification are you need to clearly show what you have produced. If you have “far exceeds” in performance reviews say so clearly.

2. Some examples of what drives you, what gets you out of bed in the morning, what gives you the experience of accomplishment

And, how that is going to be useful to your potential employer. For example, I love solving problems.

3. Examples of things you initiated and saw through to completion

That you have performed well in a defined job is useful but not sufficient to stand out. You need to give examples of things you have started and the value added.

4. Some testimonials, things past employers of colleagues have said about you

Simple one-liners that validate what you say about yourself. Who speaks about your contribution what do they say?

5. What you can be counted on to contribute if you are hired

If you were to make your prospective employer a promise what would it be? How will you add value? How will you contribute to what they are trying to accomplish? If you can’t answer this question you are insufficiently prepared  do more homework before sending your resume.

Next week: 4 Things NOT to Include in Your Resume

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers

I would like to know the best way to explain an eight-month absence from advertising. I was laid off last summer and purposely took off 7 months to travel and spend time with my family. Then the economy tanked and I am wondering how I explain in my correspondence this hiatus. It is OK to mention my time off or should I not mention this lapse at all?  —
Heather

Don’t hide the experience Heather, highlight it. How did your time traveling expand your vision and understanding? What insights did you gain by being able to spend an extended period focused on your family? That time off made you a better, wiser, more insightful human being … now explain how it also made you a better potential employee.

Stephen Pollan

I was hoping that your expert might address something that might sound very basic – what to wear to the interview. I’ve been caught by surprise that a suit is a no-no in L.A. and was wondering what his thoughts might be.  Keep up the fantastic work and thanks so much!  — Sincerely, Victoria

Being overdressed may occasionally make you feel out of place, but you could easily compensate with your manner and approach. Being under dressed will always make you stick out and there’s almost no hope of compensating. It’s easier to appear conservative and show that you’re not, than to appear unserious and show that you’re actually a pro. When in doubt, dress in standard formal business wear.
