Cynopsis: Kids!

05/05/09

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 5, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Vroom! Vroom! NASCAR and Tinseltown Toons are teaming up to produce a new direct-to-video family-targeted movie titled, NASCAR: The Secret life of Cars.  Set for release in 2011 from universal Studios Home Entertainment, the full-length title takes place in a NASCAR garage when all the humans have gone for the day and the cars come alive.  Based on a concept by Tinseltown’s Joshua Wexler, the DVD movie is being penned by screenwriter Tom Rogers (The Lion King 1 1/2).

Online ad network Alloy Media + Marketing expanded the reach of its Alloy Media Network to include tweens.  Targeted to Tweens 8-12, Tween.com aggregates sites including The Clique, Pretty Little Liars, Jonas Brothers Fan and Popstar Online, reaching some 15+ million unique monthly users.  Alloy is also adding youth-targeted casual gaming site Candystand.com to its network through an exclusive marketing and advertising partnership.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Summit Entertainment’s movie Twilight leads the way with seven nominations for the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, followed by Fox Searchlight’s Slumdog Millionaire with six, Disney’s High School Musical 3: Senior year with five nods, and Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight with four.  Hosted by Andy Samberg the 2009 MTV Movie Awards airs live from the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, on Sunday, May 31 at 9p.  This marks the first year in which the final nominees were decided on by the fans.  From May 4-27, viewers can visit MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for their favorite movie moments and actors, however the category of Best Movie of the year will remain open throughout the live show. Additionally, during the voting window fans can also go to facebook.com/mtv, myspace.com/mtv, Flixster and IMDB.com for a special Movie Awards social module where they cast their votes, take polls, watch promo videos, get news and tweets about the show and special links to contests.

MARKETING/LICENSING

One of the newest popular Japanese characters is Mameshiba, which literally translates at bean-dog, is headed to the US, UK, Australia and other English-language regions, including Licensing Show 2009.  Created by Japan-based ad agency Dentsu Inc. as an animated short, the Mameshiba are actually beans with puppy dog faces that emit trivial information and have grown into a licensing success in Japan.  DCI Los Angeles (DCI-LA), a unit of Dentsu America, will handle licensing in all English speaking territories.  DCI-LA is currently seeking licensees in the plush, toy, fashion, accessory and collectible categories.  The Mameshiba now number 25+ characters and since debuting a year ago have generated $30+ million in retail sales in Japan, and with 20+ licensees 250+ products is expected to surpass $50 million in 2009.

Paramount Licensing licensee Mattel Toys is launching a line of collectible die cast toy cars based on sports cars made famous in Paramount feature films Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Italian Job and Vanilla Sky.  With the suggested retail price for each car is $99.99, The Vanilla Sky 250 GTO will be available in stores from August 25, 2009, followed by The Italian Job 360 Spider on October 1, 2009, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’s 250 California SWB on November 1, 2009.

E1 Music (f/k/a Koch Records) is set to release the new CD, Carole and Paula in the Magic Garden: Selections From the Hit TV Show, on May 19, 2009. This CD features 18 of songs from the regional kid’s TV series The Magic Garden, which ran on NY’s WPIX, affiliates and cable systems from 1972-84.
