05/05/09

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 5, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Anticipation is building among publishers and gadget lovers alike for Amazon‘s Wednesday press conference, where the company is expected to unveil a new and improved Kindle geared toward delivering electronic editions of textbooks, newspapers and magazines. This e-reader will feature a larger screen better equipped to navigate the pages of publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, which currently cost $13.99/month and $9.99/month respectively to receive daily on the Kindle 2. Publishers are scrambling to embrace new digital distribution platforms and competitors to the Kindle continue to emerge. For instance, News Corp. is reportedly investing in a new device for its publishing properties (also with a bigger screen.) USA Today publisher Gannett is participating in trials with a new tablet in development from Plastic Logic. Yet the WSJ, the #2 most subscribed to daily on the Kindle, has managed only 15,000 or so subscribers according to the paper, compared to (an aggressively discounted) paid circulation of more than 2 million daily. Oh, and don’t forget about those rumors that Apple is working on a larger version of the iPhone sporting a 10″ touchscreen.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The New York Times reached an agreement with 6 of the 7 unions representing employees of The Boston Globe, which should keep the Globe afloat for the foreseeable future. (The paper’s editorial staff was the only holdout.) The Times, which purchased The Globe for $1.1 billion in 1993, had demanded a $20 million reduction in operating expenses to save it from going under.

Dutch cable operator Ziggo B.V. and Warner Bros. Entertainment have launched the Warner TV subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) branded service in the Netherlands. In addition to a selection of Warner Bros. shows and movies, the service will provide access to feature films day-in-date of their DVD release through On-Demand, part of Ziggo’s Interactive TV service.

IFC launched a new multiplatform campaign to raise awareness about the role media plays in Americans’ lives. IFC tv will create PSAs for use on the network and for distribution to affiliates. The Make Media Matter website will serve as the hub of the campaign, featuring tutorials on how to create your own content along with news, interactive features, blog entries and various media literacy resources.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Web studio Revision3 launched its latest web show, JV’s World, the first of three new programs coming this summer. JV is a local San Francisco DJ-turned talking web head who takes aim at banal pop culture icons.

Digital production house Agility Studios announced its next web project – a hosted geek-targeted debate series devoted to such pressing issues as “Should I have a Lord of the Rings- or a Star Wars-themed wedding?,” or “Could Harry Potter beat Neo in a fight?” The “Ultradome” pilot is currently in post-production, produced by and starring Milo Ventimiglia (best known as Peter Petrelli in Heroes.)

Webby-award nominated MediaTronica, up for its remix video sampler widget and its remix of Interpartysystem’s “Don’t Stop” video, has released its latest mash-up. It’s a mix tape of quintessential Quentin Tarantino moments.

NBC.com is teaming with San Francisco-based mobile app provider Kiptronic to roll out a mobile video ad platform to serve video ads and dynamically switch out advertisers via DoubleClick’s commonly used DART system. Advertisers can utilize a single interface to buy, track and traffic ads, control “share-of-voice,” and access detailed reporting on mobile platforms. Kiptronic will also handle backend support on NBC.com mobile website.

Helping smaller advertisers to cash in on the web’s cult of celebrity, Microsoft introduced a new program with Brand Affinity Technologies designed to allow advertisers to tap Brand Affinity’s roster of stars and athletes to pitch products on a CPM basis.

Online ad network Alloy Media + Marketing expanded its reach to include tweens. Tween.com aggregates sites including The Clique, Pretty Little Liars, Jonas Brothers Fan and Popstar Online, reaching an aggregate 15 million monthly uniques.  Alloy is also adding youth-targeted casual gaming site Candystand.com to its network through an exclusive marketing and advertising partnership.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

DirecTV announced formal plants to merge with the Liberty Entertainment division to be spun off from Liberty Media. Under the terms of the deal, DirecTV will become the controlling parent of a newly-divided Liberty Entertainment. Assets not included in the split-off will fall under the renamed “Liberty Starz,” consisting of Starz Entertainment, 37% of WildBlue, PicksPal, Fanball and approximately $650 million in cash and cash equivalents. Liberty Media chairman John Malone will retain a 24% voting stake in DirecTV.

Emulex
officially rejected an unsolicited takeover bid from chip maker Broadcom, complaining that the $764 million offer significantly undervalues the networking equipment company.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Thanks in part to an aggressive buy-one-get-one promotion, Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Curve device sold so well last quarter that it beat out the iPhone in the U.S., according to new estimates from NPD Group. Smartphones, which comprised just 17% of total phones sold during Q1 of 2008, jumped to 23% of overall sales during Q1 of 2009.

Top Selling Smartphones in the U.S. – First Quarter 2009

  1. RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
  2. Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
  3. RIM BlackBerry Storm
  4. RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
  5. T-Mobile G1

Mobile ad network provider Greystripe released some interesting metrics gauging how iPhone users consume content. The average iPhone or iPod Touch user is engaged for nearly 10 minutes per use per app and spends 3 hours and 10 minutes on average on games and apps per month.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Research in Motion announced the availability of a new BlackBerry push API (application programming interface) that will enable third party developers to push real-time content to BlackBerry smartphones. This means that applications will no longer need to constantly check for updated data – a process that both consumes data and drains the battery. Instead, the applications will be notified of new data in the same way that a BlackBerry’s email app is notified when a new message arrives.

AT&T confirmed that RIM’s BlackBerry Curve 8900 will launch on its network beginning in early summer. The Curve, featuring GPS, Wi-Fi and an iPhone-busting 3.2 megapixel camera, has been out on T-Mobile since January, but integration with AT&T’s hot spot network could really make this a must have.

PC Magazine’s popular PC application control panel app Startup Cop Pro released a new 10-year anniversary edition. It’s designed to help streamline your Windows operating system by allowing you to easily disable programs you don’t need upon boot up. The application, formerly given away a subscription promotion, now sells for $7.97 at pcmag.com.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

ION Media Networks
upped Brett Jenkins to VP/Technology. ~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Websites are best utilized by entertainment properties when they can provide resources to enrich the experience of the viewer when they consume the core product. HBO has put together a comprehensive destination site for its new multiplatform The Alzheimer’s Project, an ambitious series beginning May 10 about the tragic disease featuring 4 documentaries, 15 short supplementary films, a book and a community outreach program. Each documentary contains its own page where users can post comments about their own experience with Alzheimers, complete with discussion guides to help families confront issues surrounding the disease. A comprehensive glossary defines difficult drugs and conditions. The Hope in Science section details current efforts to understand and treat the condition. HBO has also a built a Tribute Wall on Facebook to help viewers honor the afflicted.
