Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, May 26, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!  This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Almost everyone is looking for ways to save money, and one of the most effective methods is by writing down all your monthly expenses.  Studies show the average person underestimates their monthly expenditures by 25% or more. People often forget cell phone bills, movie rentals, dry cleaning charges etc. A comprehensive list of all expenses will allow a person to prioritize their spending.  Once the list is completed, find ways to cut spending through substitution or perhaps even elimination among the lower priority items.

Phone calls to insurance companies and digital television providers can often result in lower monthly payments for the same service. For instance, I contacted my cable provider when I was considering a switch to a different company. I was connected to a retention specialist and my bill was reduced by 33%.  As another example, I spent two hours one afternoon calling up insurance companies telling them of the exact coverage I had and asked if they could beat the price I was currently paying. I switched to another insurance company and saved $500.00.

Don’t forget the small stuff, it can add up quickly.  Many families enjoy pizza night.  The average takeout pizza is about $15 without toppings. Store bought frozen pizza cost $6.  Many consider the store bought pizza just as good, if not better, than the pizzeria pizza.  If you have pizza once a week, you can save about $35 a month or $420 a year.

People who rent a lot of movies, should join a club provided by the rental chains.  Or alternatively, rent a la carte –  but look for vending machines that rent DVDs for $1 a night.

This is easy to do and will save money, but it all starts with writing down each monthly expense and then giving each of them careful consideration.

Next week: Interviews.

Cynopsis: Classified Advantage is a work in progress, designed with our readers in mind. We welcome your feedback and will try to incorporate any suggestions into our weekly coverage.  And if you have any specific questions or topics of particular interest you’d like our Experts to address, please let me know!  You can reach me – John Cox – directly at [email protected].

The professional recruiter is trying to discover if you are capable of delivering the kinds of results he needs:  Do you have similar experience, or at least experience relevant to his situation and needs; and will you fit into his culture, share his values, relate well with his people and customers.  You, on the other hand, are trying to find the ideal job; the place where you can make a contribution, enjoy your work and new colleagues.

Until you find paid employment “job hunting” is your full-time job. This means you need to approach your job search with the same rigor and discipline your future employer will expect.

1.      Let everyone know you are looking for a new job – tell them what kind of job you are looking for.
2.      Ask them to put the word out to their network – 80% of jobs are filled as a result of word of mouth connections.
3.      Use all of your network, for example LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, every place where you are connected to people.
4.      Create a spreadsheet to track connections, conversations, referrals, and meetings.
5.      Make specific requests so people know how to help you. Example: “Will you introduce me to the head hunter who placed you in your job?”
6.      Follow industry specific search sites and job boards .
7.      Be ready to be interviewed at the drop of a hat, which means, stay groomed, in work mode. Being without a job does not equal unpaid vacation. This is not a time to kick back and relax and play – save that until after the new job.
8.      Surround yourself with upbeat friends and support. We are not at our most engaging when we are feeling sorry for ourselves.
9.      Regularly review progress, ideally with someone who is committed to supporting you.
10.      Take care of those close to you. Being without a job is stressful, just don’t let stress hurt your relationships. Find ways to help yourself manage stress.
