Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 26, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney Animation Studios is creating Prep for Landing, a new half-hour holiday special that will premiere on ABC later this year.  This is the first time ABC has acquired an animated special from its sister division.  Based on a concept by Chris Williams, who directed Bolt, the special is executive produced by John Lasseter, produced by Dorothy McKim and co-directed by Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton.  Prep and Landing revolves around an elite unit of elves that use high tech gadgets to prep homes for Santa’s arrival.  Trouble brews when Wayne (Dave Foley) does not get the promotion he expects, and instead North Pole Christmas Eve Command Center Coordinator Magee  (Sarah Chalke) assigns him to work with an enthusiastic rookie elf recruit Lanny (Derek Richardson) on a special Christmas Eve mission.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Bazooka Joe the movie?  Michael Eisner and his Tornante Company are looking to bring the star featured in comics wrapped in Topps‘ Bazooka gum, and have signed newcomer Mark Hammer to write a screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The Bazooka Joe movie idea is part of Eisner’s plan to breathe new life into Topps’ brands.  Eisner acquired Topps Co. in 2007 for some $385 million.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) joins the Ad Council and Sesame Workshop to launch a national public service advertising campaign designed to encourage US families and kids to take simple steps to protect themselves from the 2009 H1N1 flu virus and continue to practice healthy habits.  As part of HHS and the Ad Council’s campaign, Sesame Workshop produced a TV PSA featuring Sesame Street’s Elmo and Gordon explaining the importance of healthy habits including washing your hands, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and sneezing into the bend of your arm.  An extension of Sesame’s Healthy Habits for Life initiative, the PSAs direct viewers to go to www.cdc.gov for information on how to stay healthy.  The Ad Council is distributing the PSAs to TV stations nationwide.

Hasbro and Discovery Communications complete Hasbro’s purchase of a 50% interest in a joint venture that holds the Discovery Kids Network in the US.  Hasbro and Discovery plan for the joint venture to create a re-branded kid’s/family entertainment aimed TV network.  Slated to launch in late 2010, the network will feature content based on Hasbro’s portfolio of properties, and content from Discovery’s extensive library kid’s programming, as well as programming from third-party producers.

Comarex acquires the distribution rights to Nickelodeon Latin America‘s sitcom Skimo.  Targeted to kids and teens, Skimo is currently in its fourth season and is co-produced in Mexico by Nickelodeon Latin America and Macias Group International.  Under the deal with Art Sound Comarex holds the exclusive worldwide distribution rights to Skimo.

Disney Channel will run a Special Agent Oso marathon on Saturday, June 13, 6a-10a.  The marathon will feature eight episodes, including one new episode (8a), of the preschool animated series.  Additionally, leading up to the on-air event preschoolers are invited to digitally paint their own Digi-Medals (like the ones featured in the series) and submit them at www.playhousedisney.com for a chance to be highlighted on Disney Channel during the marathon.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Moonscoop inks new home entertainment deals in Spain for two properties SamSam (52×30) and Code Lyoko (97×26) with Warner Home Video Spain.  The pact includes all seasons of both series, which will be distributed by Warner Home Video Spain.  Code Lyoko is produced by Moonscoop with France 3 and Canal J and airs in Spain on Clan TVE and Cartoon Network.  Based on the comic book of the same name, the preschool 3D-animated HD SamSam is produced by Bayard Jeunesse Animation, and airs in Spain on TV Catalunya and Boomerang.

Jamba Juice signs two new licensees, Think Wow Toys and Oregon Ice Cream, as part of its new Blend revitalization initiative to extend the Jamba brand.  Under the deals Think Wow Toys is developing a kid-targeted EZ-2 Make Jamba Juice Smoothie and Ice Pop Maker, while Oregon Ice Cream, which creates natural food products, plans to introduce a Jamba Juice line of “better-for-you frozen novelties.”  These new deals build on the existing relationship that Jamba Juice has with Nestle to create Jamba-branded retail products, including Ready-to-Drink beverages.

This year author/illustrator Richard Scarry would have turned 90 and Sterling Publishing marks the year by encouraging kids/families, teachers, librarians and booksellers to celebrate his life with A Very Scarry Summer.  For 90 days beginning this June, Sterling will offer sweepstakes, downloadable games and puzzles as well as special remembrances at its website www.sterlingpublishing.com/kids/a-summer-of-scarry .  Scarry, who passed away in 1994, created 300+ books that have sold 200+ million copies around the world in 30 languages.  Sterling Publishing Co., in conjunction with JB Communications, is bringing back a range of Scarry’s books.
