~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Canadian broadcasters completed their transactions late last week at the LA Screenings, taking home a slew of new US TV series.

  • Canwest Global picked up The Good Wife, NCIS: Los Angeles and the newly revamped Melrose Place from CBS Studios International in addition to two comedies from Sony Pictures Television, Brothers and Community. Canwest also picked up three Twentieth Century Fox Television comedies: Glee, Cleveland and Sons of Tucson.
  • CTV was a big player as well acquiring two series from executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Warner Bros. Television, The Forgotten and Miami Trauma. CTV in addition picked up the drama Flash Forward from ABC Studios based on the novel of the same name by Canadian Robert Sawyer and Beautiful Life from CBS Studios International.
  • Rogers Media, for its Citytv-branded TV stations, bought Modern Family produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television and earlier acquired NBC’s The Jay Leno Show for its 10p time period.

Swain Entertainment and Eclipse TV are teaming on a 30m television project called Moms on the Move. The program, created, produced and hosted by Linda Swain, relates real-life stories of ordinary moms and celebrities whose accomplishments offer viewers new ideas and options. Four of the twelve planned shows are available on a barter basis for a June to September air window, with the remaining shows available for fall 2009. Taped in front of a studio audience, Moms on the Move is cleared in 80% of the US including WABC/New York, WLS/Chicago, KPIX/San Francisco and WCAU/Philadelphia. Information about the show can be found at www.momsonthemove.com .

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Microsoft plans to spend $80-$100 million to promote its new search engine that now has a name – “Bing,” per Ad Age. (This is a huge commitment considering the software giant’s entire ad budget was $25 million in 2008, according to TNS Media Intelligence.) Ad agency JWT has been hiring new creative executives to tackle the challenge. The campaign will be focused on convincing users that existing search engines just aren’t cutting it.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Disney Animation Studios is creating Prep for Landing, a new half-hour holiday special that will premiere on ABC later this year.  This is the first time ABC has acquired an animated special from its sister division.  Based on a concept by Chris Williams, who directed Bolt, the special is executive produced by John Lasseter, produced by Dorothy McKim and co-directed by Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton.  Prep and Landing revolves around an elite unit of elves that use high tech gadgets to prep homes for Santa’s arrival.  Trouble brews when Wayne (Dave Foley) does not get the promotion he expects, and instead North Pole Christmas Eve Command Center Coordinator Magee  (Sarah Chalke) assigns him to work with an enthusiastic rookie elf recruit Lanny (Derek Richardson) on a special Christmas Eve mission.  Full edition: CYN KIDS
