Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 19, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Sony scored a coup in the digital projection space signing #1 U.S. exhibitor Regal Entertainment as a client. The deal, which comes on the heels of a 5-country commitment with AMC, suddenly puts Sony in the lead in its battle with Texas Instruments, whose DLP-powered 2K projectors have dominated the market thus far. Regal has committed to rolling out Sony’s 4K digital projectors across its entire 551-theater circuit in the next few years, which will expand Sony’s digital projection footprint to 11,000 screens. Approximately 1,500 of the Regal screens will also be outfitted for 3D digital projection, using Sony’s newly introduced dual-lens adaptor technology.

The Atlanta-based start-up has raised $12.3 million in funding to date and counts Jim Chiddix, former CTO of Time Warner Cable, among its minority investors.

When Guttenberg invented the printing press I’m not sure he envisioned the consolidation of publishing under a few corporate chieftains. One of the great promises of digital publishing for authors is the elimination of the middleman. But companies like Amazon are already emerging to try and gain dominance in e-publishing in order to dictate terms and sew up usurious revenue splits. Document sharing site Scribd is taking a more egalitarian approach with its new Scribd Store. The e-book outlet allows authors or publishers to set their own price for their work and keep 80% of the revenue generated from the site. The idea is to empower authors to market their own works with tools like a new integration with Twitdoc.com that automatically tweets a message to your followers every time you upload a document. It publishes in a variety of file types including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and unprotected PDF – making them readable on the Kindle and just about any other device out there. The site is very much a work in progress – much more needs to be done in terms of the interface and the recommendation engine. Scribd also needs to tackle the DRM issue at some point, and perform its due diligence to keep unauthorized copies of works off the platform – a complaint often leveled against the site. Yet open, flexible outlets like Scribd are needed to level the playing field and maintain a balance of power in the nascent industry.
