~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The 2009 Upfront week is underway with FOX and Telemundo presenting their 2009-2010 slates yesterday (see below). A handful of new announcements from other broadcast networks emerged concerning pilot pickups and returning series:

  • First up, ABC cancelled the sitcom Samantha Who? after two seasons from ABC Studios. The comedy headlined by Christina Applegate was expected to return but ended up being cut from ABC’s schedule due to budgets.
  • Making it official, CBS handed out several orders for pilots Monday involving the NCIS spinoff starring LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell; the legal drama The Good Wife headlined by Julianna Margulies; the medical drama Three Rivers with former Moonlight star Alex O’Loughlin in the lead; the Jenna Elfman comedy Accidentally on Purpose; and the ensemble medical drama Miami Trauma from Jerry Bruckheimer. The NCIS spinoff, Three Rivers, The Good Wife and Accidentally on Purpose are all from CBS Television Studios and Miami Trauma is from Warner Bros. TV.
  • In addition, CBS ordered an unscripted series Undercover Boss, a format from the UK that is similar to Secret Millionaire meshed with Dirty Jobs.
  • CBS is also allowing ABC Studios to begin staffing for the drama House Rules.

MTV tackles a sensitive and controversial subject in its new series, 16 & Pregnant opening June 11 at 10p with six one-hour episodes. The intimate series will follow the lives of pregnant teenagers as they become young parents while juggling relationships, finances, school and other new responsibilities. With statistics reflecting three out of ten girls will become pregnant in the US before they turn 20, MTV is also partnering with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy in support of this series.

CMT is buzzing about the karaoke-style singing competition series The Singing Bee premiering June 20 at 10p following the season two debut of competition series Can You Duet. The Singing Bee will be hosted by Melissa Peterman (Reba) and the ten one-hour episodes will be taped on location in Los Angeles. New to CMT’s version, The Singing Bee will use lyrics from 60% country music songs along with 40% from popular favorites of other genres. The Singing Bee is produced by The Gurin Company and JUMA Entertainment.

G4 introduces two new series this summer:

  • The International Sexy Ladies Show – Male targeted half-hour series featuring beautiful women in funny and provocative television clips from around the world, with commentary from well-known comedians. Premieres June 7 at 930p in G4’s Duty Free TV international programming block.
  • 2 Months, $2 Million – A new docu-series takes viewers inside the world of competitive high stakes online poker players. The ten-episode 30m series follows four professional poker players, Brian, Emil, Jay and Dani who have challenged themselves to earn $2 million in two months using their own money. When the foursome is not playing, all experience the pleasures of Las Vegas where they are based. The series is produced by Park Slope Productions in association with G4 and opens this August.

When Conan O’Brien takes over as host of NBC’s The Tonight Show June 1 in Los Angeles, his first guest will be Will Ferrell, who will also be his final guest on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in New York. Pearl Jam will be the first music group to appear on Conan’s The Tonight Show.

Meredith Corporation, publisher of such magazine brands as Parents, Family Circle, Ladies’ Home Journal, Fitness and American Baby is teaming with WE tv on a multi-brand cross promotion campaign beginning next month. The deal covers editorial coverage and online promotions within Meredith’s brands highlighting WE tv original series such as Raising Sextuplets, The Locator, I Want To Save Your Life and Adoption Diaries among others. In turn, within select episodes of WE tv’s original series, Meredith’s lifestyle and medical experts will be featured as well as customized on-air banners showcasing Meredith brands.
