Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
05.12.09
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, May 12, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Finding a job in today’s economy is extremely difficult. Waves of recently laid off workers combined with a widespread slowdown in hiring across Corporate America has more people competing for fewer jobs, and those in the market for a new job will have to up the ante if they want to be successful. Looking for jobs in newspapers or general interest magazines is not nearly as effective as looking into a publication, like Cynopsis, that specializes in your area of expertise.
When applying to a job, tailor your resume to highlight specific skills and accomplishments that are relevant to that position. Be sure not to discount the importance of a cover letter, which should act as a complement, not a reproduction, of your resume. Use your cover letter to your advantage. Conventionally, cover letters are used to flesh out the top-line details on your resume and further explain your interest in the company you are applying to. And it can also be a way to explain unattractive blips on your resume, such as a long gap between employment or a short tenure at your last job. Regardless of content, your cover letter will showcase your writing ability. Good communication skills – written or otherwise – are a requirement for almost any position.
To make matters more difficult, many jobs are filled without being publicly advertised through internal promotions or from personal recommendations, so extending your job efforts to include networking is crucial. As already established contacts, friends and family are obvious sources of leads, but working to create relationships outside of your existing network can pay back large dividends in job hunting. College alumni networks and professional association clubs can be an extremely useful networking tool. Social websites such as Facebook and MySpace can be valuable tools for getting in touch with lost friends and colleagues, but be careful: job-searchers should operate under the assumption that these sites will be researched by would-be employers. Websites specifically designed with professional networking in mind, like LinkedIn, might be a safer and more effective approach.
Next week: In-depth look at Cover letters
Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage is a work in progress, designed with our readers in mind. We welcome your feedback and will try to incorporate any suggestions into our weekly coverage. FOUR THINGS YOU MUST NOT INCLUDE IN YOUR RESUME
By Peter Roche
Every professional recruiter is trying to discover from your resume, is this person (you) capable of delivering the kinds of results we need? Does this person (you) have similar experience, or at least experience that is relevant to our situation and needs? And will this person (you) fit in our culture, share our values, relate well with our people and customers?
So resumes need to be tailored to highlight how you can satisfy what it is that employers want in a new hire.
However, it may have been some time since you last wrote a resume so here are a few simple don’ts.
1. Don’t tell lies about your job history or track record
Employers will do their own fact checking. To be found out in a lie will mean you will not get the job, it will also mean you have damaged your reputation.
2. Don’t include information about your marital status, age, race or family.
And, don’t include a photograph, no matter how great you think you look.
3. Don’t make it easy for a recruiter to reject your resume
Colored or scented papers – no! Be very careful about clever “attention getting” packaging for your resume, for example, delivered at lunchtime in a pizza box. If in doubt – the answer is no!
4. Don’t include overt sales pitches in your resume, like asking for job even before you have been interviewed. You don’t get a job with a resume.
Why? Because today’s savvy employers rely on much more than a resume to make a hiring decision.

Questions from our Readers
I have been finding the question of salary a difficult one. Prior to the economy going in the garbage, I did my research as to what was fair market salary for someone with my skills, experience, etc. And when asked, I would confidently give a figure/range. My question is two-part:
(a) when asked about salary expectations, what is the best and safest way to answer, without eliminating your candidacy while still appearing competitive? Is there a fool-proof way to turn it around back to have them give you the range? (b) what is a fair salary range to provide when answering: 10k, 15k, 20k range?
Thanks, “BK”
In a salary negotiation you never want to be the first one to mention a figure or even a range, since the only direction it can subsequently go is down and you may unknowingly leaving money on the table. The best way response is to say you’ve been earning the market value at your current job, are looking for the same at your next position, and move on to selling your candidacy. You want to have a separate compensation conversation after you’ve been offered a position. If the interviewer presses you to offer a number or range, add 15 percent to the top figure or range you uncovered in your research.
I was recently at an interview when the interviewer, in the midst of small talk, casually asked if I was planning a family. I am a 27 year old, recently married woman and I wonder if this question is proper. I see no upside in my answer or in pointing out my discomfort for the question itself. Is the interviewer genuinely interested in my family plans, as he has three young children of his own, or is he thinking “maternity leave” let’s hire someone else? Do companies have a right to know whether a potential employee will soon leave their job for an extended amount of time? I see both sides to this and don’t know how to handle it. Please help.
Jessica
Jessica: Well intended or not, the question is entirely inappropriate. However much a company might want to know your plans, an interviewer can only ask questions that directly pertain to your performance of the tasks required by the position. That said, the last thing you want to do is call the interviewer on his or her behavior. The best way to handle this is to simply say you honestly haven’t thought about it, you have been focusing on your career, and then segue into a pitch for the job.
