Cynopsis: Kids!

3/06/07

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 6, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Home Video, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation will release the new original animated movie, Superman Doomsday, on DVD September 18, 2007.  Rated PG-13, Superman Doomsday is the first DC Universe movie and will feature the voices of Adam Baldwin as Superman, Anne Heche as Lois Lane and James Marsters as Lex Luthor.  For those who are thinking, didn’t Superman get killed-off in DC Comics’ The Death of Superman back in 1993?  You are right.  Produced by Bruce Timm and written by Duane Capizzi, Superman Doomsday is inspired by that graphic novel (Superman Number 75) and details the legendary battle.  A huge seller, The Death of Superman is credited with bringing many one-time comic book readers back into the fold.  In addition to the movie, the DVD will feature 70+ minutes of added value extras including: The Clash of the Juggernauts – comic book writers and artists talk about the Death of Superman and the craze surrounding its release; The Artists Playground…From Art to Sound Design in Superman Doomsday; Justice League: The New Frontier – a sneak look at the upcoming DC Universe movie; and Defeat Doomsday: Battle Challenge – an interactive game.

Disney Channel has begun production on its new original series Wizards of Waverly Place.  Slated to premiere on Disney Channel US in fall 2007, the live-action comedy revolves around The Russo’s, a multi-cultural family with three siblings, one sister and two brothers, who engage in the regular sibling stuff.  But, here’s the twist, they all happen to be wizards in training and only one of them will retain their powers when they turn 19.  The series is created and executive produced by Todd Greenwald (Hannah Montana).

MORE KIDS STUFF

AT&T Inc. and ION Media Networks, Inc. have entered into a distribution deal that will bring ION’s programming channels to the AT&T U-verse TV channel lineup.  Under the pact, AT&T will carry ION Television and the recently launched 24/7 digital networks, qubo, the bilingual, educational kid targeted network, and ION Life, promoting active lifestyles, personal growth, and wellness.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

As The Powerpuff Girls head toward their 10th anniversary in 2008, Cartoon Network and Warner Home Video are beginning the celebration early with the release of The Powerpuff Girls: Season One on DVD on June 19, 2007.  The special two-disc Powerpuff Girls DVD will of course feature all 13 episodes of the first cycle as well as several never before released content including, creator Craig McCracken’s student film The Whoopass Girls, an early incarnation of the crime-fighting trio.

Bandai Visual USA Inc. and Geneon Entertainment (USA) Inc., a US supplier of Japanese animation, have completed a 2-year deal to distribute Bandai Visual USA titles on DVD to US and Canadian retailers.  The first titles to be distributed under the deal include multiple volumes of Gunbuster 2, Demon Prince Enma, The Wings of Rean, Freedom and Galaxy Angel Rune.  Geneon will be the exclusive distributor of Bandai Visual USA titles released after March 1, 2007.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The BBC and IBM have inked a deal that will include several digital projects including to develop better online search capabilities on the BBC’s websites.  The first project under the new deal will see BBC incorporate IBM’s image and video search technology called “Marvel” into its websites for its digital kids channels CBeebies and CBBC.

The Florida Strawberry Growers Association have joined together with Strawberry Shortcake for a promotion targeted to kids 2-7 and their families at 893 Publix Supermarkets across the Southeast region of the US.  The FSGA is sponsoring a number of in-store events March 4-10, 2007 at Publix stores including those in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and South Tennessee.  The stores will also display point-of-purchase materials in the produce sections that will feature a poster with Strawberry Shortcake: Growing Better All the Time.  The effort will also be supported by print ads.  Strawberry Shortcake is an American Greeting property, which was re-introduced by the company and DIC Entertainment in 2004.

The LEGO Group has tapped NetDevil to develop a LEGO branded massively multiplayer online game.

The number of video game consoles in US TV households is up by +18.5% from 4Q 2004 through 4Q 2006, according to The State of the Console, a new report released by Nielsen Wireless and Interactive Services.  As of 4Q 2006, some 45.7 million US TV households with video game consoles, representing 41.1% of all US TV households versus 38.6 million households representing 39.1% in 4Q 2004.  Nielsen underlines the increase in both the number and percentage of US TV households with video game consoles stands out in light of the fact that the number of total TV households has risen 1.6 over the same period.  Other findings from the report:

  • The number of connected console households (those subscribing to a service that links their consoles to the Internet) is up by 4.4+ million, prior to accounting for the connectivity of the PlayStation 3 and Wii platforms.
  • During the 4Q 2006, gamers in the top quintile (the top 20% of users based on average use over the quarter) accounted for 74.4% of total console usage.
  • As of the end of 2006, approximately 148.4 million persons had access to at least one video game console system in their home. That represented more than half (52.4%) of the total US TV population. Not too much of a shocker but the levels of penetration were particularly strong among both male and female Kids 2-11 and Teens 12-17, followed pretty closely by Men 18-34 and Women 18-34.

    • While more than two-thirds (67.7%) of all Men 18-34 had access to a console in their homes, the percentage moves up (70.7%) for Male Kids 2-11, jumping higher (79.8%) for Male Teens 12-17.
    • Female numbers were terribly different with more than half (58.1%) of Females 18-34 having access to a gaming console in their home moving up to (70.7%) for Female Kids 2-11 and again making the bigger jump (79.8%) for Female Teens 12-17.

  • What are video game console users watching on TV?  Here are the top 10 networks.
