Juniper Content Corporation, the parent company of Sorpresa, the Hispanic kid-targeted TV network and digital community, has raised $2.14 million in private placement of its stock. Offered on a range of cable systems and multiple platforms, Juniper plans to build Sorpresa’s status in Hispanic kid’s programming in the US marketplace and to acquire niche content providers.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Galleon Holdings enters into an exclusive co-production deal with China’s Guangdong TV Sports Channel, and the UK’s Chelsea Football Club, for a new teen-targeted multiplatform reality soccer series, titled Super Soccer Star (13×30). The show is designed to promote football (soccer) skills and fitness among teens, and will feature top players from the Guangdong province competing against one another for a chance to train with at the Chelsea Academy. Galleon owns the Super Soccer Star series and format. Following the launch of the initial series, the format will be rolled-out to other provinces in China and other countries in South East Asia.
MORE KIDS STUFF
OK, here it is … a significant week for fans of The Jim Henson Company’s movies The Dark Crystal (1982) and Labyrinth (1986) movies. Both Henson has partnered with New Video to make the two movies available for download at the iTunes Store beginning this week. Earlier this year Henson made the first seasons of its series Fraggle Rock and Farscape available through iTunes.
Cookie Jar Entertainment’s new animated comedy/action series World of Quest (13×30) is set to premiere on Kids’ WB, on The CW, Saturday, March 15 at 10:30a. Based on the Komikwerks graphic novel series by Jason Kruse and produced by Stephen Sustarsic, the World of Quest TV series was recently acquired for air on Cartoon Network in the UK, where it is slated to bow in 2009.
Sisimpur (52×30), the Bangladeshi adaptation of Sesame Street, can now be see by kids in the Middle East, the UK and North America. Sisimpur is being broadcast internationally on cable Channel i, Saturdays at 7a and Sundays at 5:45p EST (6p and 4:45a Bangladesh time). A privately held educational and entertainment Bangla channel, Channel i currently reaches kids in rural and urban regions of Bangladesh, as well as Bangladeshi kids living abroad. Previously, Sisimpur aired solely in Bangladesh and terrestrial channel Bangladesh Television (BTV).
Overbuilder RCN agreed to add ION Media Network’s kids-themed qubo network to its Chicago line-up of digital channels.
Miley Cyrus and The Naked Brothers Band are scheduled to perform live on Nickelodeon’s 2008 Kids’ Choice Awards, Saturday, March 29 at 8p. Beginning this week, kids are invited to cast votes online for their favorites in 18 categories (www.nick.com/kca), and via the Nick mobile website (wap.nick.com) March 10-14, when a different category will be featured on-air each day.
The sixth season of Discovery Kids’ reality challenge series Endurance: Fiji reaches an end this Saturday, March 8 at 8:30p. Additionally, following Endurance: Fiji, Discovery Kids’ premieres the second season of its series Adventure Camp. On Saturday March 15 at 8:30p, the first episode of Adventure Camp will repeat just ahead of a new episode at. From March 22 Adventure Camp will air Saturdays at 8p.
Nick at Nite has picked up the cable syndication rights to The CW’s off-net comedy Everybody Hates Chris, from CBS TV Distribution, on a cash + 2m barter basis, and a minimum of 4 seasons (80 episodes). In the nonexclusive four-year deal, NAN will debut the sitcom in the fall of 2009, and plans to air it in primetime. Everybody Hates Chris has already been cleared in off-network broadcast syndication for fall 2009 in 52% of the US on stations from the Fox, CBS, Cox Television and Weigel Broadcasting station groups. The fourth season of the series is currently in production.
ZVUE Corporation, a digital entertainment company, has added the SomaGirls.TV channel to the ZVUE Network. Aimed at females 15-25, the SomaGirls.TV Network features commercial and user-generated pop culture, celebrity, fashion and other entertainment related content.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Radio Disney inks a licensing deal with Gracenote (F/K/A CDDB), a digital entertainment content company, which allows Radio Disney to publish copyrighted lyrics. Kids can find the lyrics to songs on Radio Disney at www.radiodisney.com, where they can also listen to the network via the internet radio player.
Wild Republic signs a global licensing deal with National Geographic to serve as the toy partner for plush, puzzles and figurines based on the preschool animated series Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies, which airs on PBS Kids. National Geographic Kids Entertainment will distribute the plush toys across both domestic and international markets. Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies is a co-production of National Geographic Kids Entertainment, BBC/CBeebies and King Rollo Films.
Plato Learning, Inc., a provider of kids/adults computer and e-learning content, will release its Plato Achieve Now, a education-based gaming software for Sony’s PSP, set for April 2008. Designed to support elementary and middle school aged kids, the Achieve Now line, which is comprised of 57 different games, the content is also aligned educational standards of the 50 US states.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Phil Harrison, formerly President/Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, has been appointed President and Directeur General Delegue, Infogrames Entertainment. He will report to the new CEO, David Gardner. Harrison will lead Infogrames’ Group Publishing and Game Development, specifically looking to grow the Atari brand into an lining game company and boosting the group’s publishing activities. Harrison toiled for 15 years at Sony where he was a key member of the original PlayStation team.
4Kids Entertainment builds its retail group with the appointment of Joe Marziotto and Glenn Pecoraro as VPs/Retail Development. The two will lead the expansion of 4Kids’ retail programs for its key properties, as well as taking on responsibilities for developing direct-to-retail programs and retail marketing and promotional programs. Marziotto joins 4Kids from Sony Music where he was VP/Sales and Marketing, Catalog/Legacy Recordings, where he developed campaigns for Sesame Street, Nick at Nite and KidzBop, among many others. Pecoraro was most recently VP/Retail Development, Classic Media.
