NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Apparently every generation needs its very own Teen Wolf movie, who knew? At any rate rumor has it that this generation will find its Teen Wolf in actor Tom Welling, of Smallville fame, per a report at DarkHorizon.com. Previous Teen Wolf movies starred Michael J. Fox (Teen Wolf, 1985), Jason Batmen (Teen Wolf Too 1987), and of course you have to include Michael Landon (I Was A Teenage Werewolf, 1957).
MORE KIDS STUFF
Okay, we are full throttle into all Harry Potter news all the time, like you didn’t already notice, with 107.5 days (July 13, 2007) until the new movie is released and 116 days until the seventh and final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is published (July 21, 2007). And with that, here is today’s installment of HP news.
- The Listening Library, the kid’s audio imprint of the Random House Audio Publishing Group, has acquired the North American audio publishing rights to J.K. Rowling’s HP and the Deathly Hallows. With Jim Dale set to return as the narrator (he narrated the first six books), the audio edition of Deathly Hallows will be published unabridged on CD and cassette and go on sale in the US and Canada on Saturday, July 21, 2007, simultaneously with the book’s hardcover edition. The HP and the Deathly Hallows audiobook will run 21+ hours, and both the CD and Cassette editions will carry a price tag of $79.95.
- Warner Bros./WEA will release the original soundtrack from the upcoming movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, on July 10, 2007. The Order of the Phoenix movie original soundtrack features music from noted composer Nicholas Hooper. The previous HP movie soundtracks were composed by: John Williams (Sorcerer’s Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban); William Ross (Chamber of Secrets); and Patrick Doyle (Goblet of Fire). Based on the fifth book in JK Rowling’s book series, the movie adaptation of HP and the Order of the Phoenix is directed by David Yates, produced by David Heyman and penned by Matt Goldenberg.
- In the HP news you probably don’t need or care to know but I’ll tell you anyhow category … the rumor that is making big gossip news on the web is that Rupert “Ron Weasley” Grint is reportedly dating Katie Lewis, who is the lead singer for the band Bonnie & Clyde, in addition to being a recovering addict and former girl friend of rocker Pete Doherty.
XM satellite radio launches the new radio show, Robbie Schaefer’s Stuck In A Real Tall Tree, on XMKiDs this week. Hosted by indie folk musician Robbie Schaefer, the new kid-targeted show will air live on XMKiDs (XM116), Monday through Thursday, 7-11p, and Saturdays, 10a-2p. The show will feature Schaefer telling stories and singing, taking calls from listeners and offering up kid music from the XM library. Additionally, Robbie Schaefer’s Stuck In A Real Tall Tree, will introduce two original characters, Clarence the Fish and Schaefer’s mom, both actually played by Schaefer.
Toonami Jetstream has added Zatch Bell, the tween 9-14 targeted anime series, to the streaming programming available on the broadband site ( http://toonamijetstream.com ). Featuring on-demand and full-length streaming episodes of a range of anime series, Toonami Jetstream is a joint venture between VIZ Media and Cartoon Network, which falls under Cartoon Network’s Toonami action/adventure franchise banner. Zatch Bell is based on the manga series by Makoto Raiku.
Anime Network has inked a digital cable carriage deal with WideOpenWest (WOW!) for its SVOD service in Michigan, Cleveland and Illinois. In Q4 2006, Anime Network announced SVOD deals with Insight, RCN and Cogeco Cable, Inc. and linear deals with operators in Puerto Rico, Missouri, Texas, Florida and Wisconsin. Additionally, the network made its first deal on the mobile platform, under which special clips are available in premium packages for Sprint Mobile subscribers.
Nelvana Enterprises has completed a distribution agreement with the UK’s British Telecom. Under the deal, a number of Nelvana’s animated kids series will be available for online via the new BT Vision Download Store, which allows broadband users to download to own content (music, TV, movies) to their computers and/or portable devices. Episodes of Nelvana’s animated series that will be available for download (about US$3.00 per half-hour episode) include Franklin the Turtle, Max & Ruby and Maggie and the Ferocious Beast.
The 1986 animated Transformers: The Movie will be re-released in the UK by Metrodome Distribution, per Hollywood Reporter. The movie will have a two-week run at just one movie house in London’s West End from May 7, 2007. Metrodome plans to release the animated movie on a two-disc widescreen edition on DVD this June 2007. The live-action Transformers movie is set for release this summer.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Warner Home Video and Cartoon Network and Adult Swim are set to release several new DVDs in April.
- Billy & Mandy’s Big Boogey Adventure (80 min) will be available on DVD from April 3, following the movie’s debut three days earlier on Cartoon Network on Friday, March, 30 at 7p.
- Adult Swim releases three DVD titles this April of course Adult Swim shows are for older teens and up:
- Tom Goes to the Mayer: The Complete Series, also on April 3. The DVD will include all 30 episodes of the animated series. This is the first time that Adult Swim releases an entire series on DVD. Tom Goes to the Mayer is written and produced by Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, who also provide voices for the two main characters.
- The Venture Bros.: Season Two comes to DVD in a two-disc collector’s box set on Tuesday April 17. Added DVD extras include episode commentaries and a tour of the show’s production studios Astro-base Go! Jackson Publick III created the series, which is a spoof of 1960s action/adventure cartoons like Johnny Quest.
- Moral Orel: Volume One, a two-disc boxed set, is slated for an April 24 release. The release will include select uncensored commentaries and special features such as deleted scenes. Dino Stamatopoulos created this stop-motion animated series.
FremantleMedia Enterprises continues to ink deals for the series Prehistoric Park (6×60′) from Impossible Pictures. Prehistoric Park has been licensed to 52 broadcasters worldwide, with the DVD rights licensed to 30+ territories. Recent consumer product license pacts in the UK feature products developed by Tigerprint including 3D puzzle, race to the rescue board game, Dino-Puzzle, Dino-Pics photography kid with digital camera and greeting cards. Additionally, in the US, FME has granted Meredith Book the rights to publish a Prehistoric Park fun fact book, which will be featured at Scholastic Book fairs and at Borders retailers. Prehistoric Park is a co-production between ITV (UK), Animal Planet (US), M6 (France) and ProSieben (Germany).

Program Partners has upped two executives. David Hutchinson has been named SVP/Program Operations and New Media. He will be responsible for developing new program distribution systems and technologies as well as for growing the reach and revenue opportunities across new media platforms. Hutchinson had been VP/Business Development & Operations. Previously he served as VP/Broadband Operations, ARTISTdirect. Chad MacDonald moves up to Executive Director/TV Research, Regional Sales Manager, from his previous role as Director/Research & Regional Sales. Prior to Program Partners, MacDonald served as an Associate Director on Entertainment Tonight.
