Cynopsis: Kids!

3/13/07

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 13, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Michael Eisner’s The Tornante Company has established Vuguru, an indie studio that will produce and distribute original and third party content for the internet and emerging digital platforms.  First up for Vuguru is Prom Queen, a scripted mystery that will be told over 80 short-form episodes, each running 90-seconds, set to premiere online April 2, 2007 on PromQueen.tv.  Prom Queen revolves around the final months of the school year and mixes the various types high-school angst (gossip, love, betrayal) as the kids head toward prom.  The sponsors for Prom Queen include ELLEgirl, Fiji Water, POM Wonderful and Teleflora.com.  Additionally, the series will be distributed online by Veoh Networks and YouTube and will be available via Veoh, YouTube, ELLEgirl.com as well as on mobile units.

MORE KIDS STUFF

MTV and Mark Burnett Productions will feature consumer-generated content in the 16th Annual 2007 MTV Movie Awards through a new partnership between MTV and Yahoo! Movies.  So, if you are an aspiring filmmaker or just want to give it a go … the show producers have created the new Best Movie Spoof User Generated Category.  The short film must be an original parody of a movie from the past year and can be submitted via the MTV Movie Awards on Yahoo! interactive website, launching April 23.  Additionally, MTV, Yahoo Movies and Burnett Productions are developing an area on the website where viewers can comment on submissions and the like, which will be folded into the awards ceremony on a “World Wide Web Wall.”  You’ll recall that Mark Burnett will serve as Executive Producer, along with Sally Frattini, of the 16th Annual awards, which will be handed out live for the first time, Sunday, June 3, 2007 on MTV, from the Gibson Theater in Universal City, Calif.  By the way, this is also when the movie spoof winner will also be revealed.

Anime Network has inked a 24/7 linear carriage deal with Grande Communications.  Under the deal Anime Network is available as of this month to Grande customers in Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, San Antonio and Waco.  Anime Network’s recently completed 24/7 linear cable carriage deals/launches in Puerto Rico, Missouri, Houston, Florida and Wisconsin.

Cookie Jar Entertainment has inked a broadcast deal with Good Morning TV (GMTV) on ITV1 for its series The Doodlebops. The preschool-targeted series will broadcast Saturdays at 6a on GMTV from April 1, 2007.  ITV1 also plans to give The Doodlebops a weekday play on GMTV2 beginning this summer.

G4 will launch a new season of its science run-amok series, Brainiac, beginning March 19, at 12 midnights.  Obviously, given the time slot this is not a show for younger kids, but that said – teens, teens and teens!  You know after you figure how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie-Pop the next questions are always, how many helium balloons does it take to lift a human?, and what is the best recipe for itching powder?  The Braniac area on the G4 website features forums, polls and video among other things ( http://www.g4tv.com/brainiac).

In Canada, Astral Media’s Family Channel will launch episodes and a new show this month.

  • Family Channel will premiere season four (22×30′) of Disney’s animated series Kim Possible on March 19, 5:08p.  Family Channel will present the first ten episodes from fourth season of series from March, with the remaining 12 episodes joining in May 2007.
  • Joining the channel line-up on Sunday March 25, at 6:30a is Power Rangers: operation Overdrive (32×30′).  A Disney and Toei co-production, this chapter of the Power Rangers will air Saturdays and Sundays at 6:30a.

Ten year olds will rule the UK TV channel Five, as the network celebrates its 10th anniversary March 26-31, 2007 (the actual anniversary in March 30) with several shows and segments: Gordon Brown Meets the Ten Year Olds – Hosted by Kirsty Young, the special is pretty much what the title says, Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer (also referred to as The Chancellor, basically the CFO of the UK), will sit with and be questioned by a group of 10-yr-olds from around the UK on issues important to them; Being Ten will feature celebrities talking about their own youth and kids telling what it is like to be ten in 2007; I Blame the Spice Girls, a panel comedy special hosted by actress Liza Tarbuck, looks at the last ten years of music, fashions, politics, and Five’s TV shows; additionally, a series of five film pieces about heroic 10yr-olds will air nightly on Five News during that week, and one episode of The Wright Stuff will celebrate the channel.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Disney Online has unveiled plans for its new virtual concerts, D*Concert: Disney Channel Concert Series that will featuring Disney Records artists and which will premiere exclusively on Disney Xtreme Digital (XD), Disney.com’s broadband social network.  The three-month D*Concert series (March-May 2007) launches today with a Hannah Montana concert, which will be available through March 19.  April and May will see concerts featuring the cast of High School Musical and the Cheetah Girls respectively.  Additionally, fans can register online to take part in chats with other fans, play D*Concert games and receive collectible concert badges.

The Game Factory is publishing a new video game title based on the animated action/adventure series Code Lyoko for the Nintendo Wii.  Slated for release in 4Q 2007, the Code Lyoko game is being developed specifically for the Wii platform by France’s Neko Entertainment.  The game will feature the familiar characters in 2D and 3D CGI graphic worlds. Distributed globally by Taffy Entertainment, Code Lyoko, the TV series, is produced by MoonScoop Productions, in association with France 3 and Canal J.  The show was created by Tania Palumbo, Thomas Romain and Carlo de Boutiny and directed by Jerome Mouscadet.

Ragdoll Ltd. has teamed with designer Isaac Mizrahi to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Teletubbies preschool property.  Mizrahi, apparently a Tubbies fan – and why not – will design five limited-edition bags inspired by the Teletubbies (each designed based on one of the characters), which will be auctioned off online this spring, with all proceeds benefiting Cure Autism Now and Autism Speaks.   The sketches of the bags will be officially showcased on March 27 at the opening party (sorry invitation only) for the Teletubbies’ Pop-Up Shop in NYC (350 Bleeker St).  The store opens to the public the following day through April 7 and will offer Teletubbies products for kids, tweens/teens and adults.  For New Yorkers, a grid-lock alert for Wednesday, March 28, this is the day that the Teletubbies will be making their way around the city making stops at places including Grand Central Station and Times Square.

New sporting goods lines based on Cartoon Network’s animated series Ben 10 will be available beginning spring/summer 2007 under deals set-up by Cartoon Network Enterprises with Huffy (bikes) Bravo Sports (skateboards and in-line skate products) and Bell Sports (safety gear).

Habbo, the teen targeted virtual community, launches its new multiplayer online game, SnowStorm, this week in all of its communities worldwide.  A virtual snowball fight of sorts, SnowStorm can be played by 2 to 4 teams simultaneously in various environments and skill levels.  To support its new game, Habbo is currently providing its members with free gaming events, free tournament weekends and free gaming days and various items for users’ personal Habbo page.  ( www.habbo.com/games/snowstorm)

STONE SOUP

Next Monday, March 19, 2006, Cynopsis will launch a new daily edition – Cyn opsis: Digital .  The edition will focus on the business of digital and broadband as it relates to the television industry and beyond.  It’s for anyone interested in how digital is rapidly becoming a major force in our industry – and even for those who believe digital is something of a phase and will never fully materialize to compete with linear television.  Any items you’ve become accustomed to seeing in this section of Cynopsis, will now be in Cyn Digital, as well as plenty of other news from the digital arena.  This new daily will be written by Wayne Karrfalt, Editor of Cyn opsis: Digital , who can be reached and is happy to accept press releases at [email protected]
