Old media meets new once again with the launch of Vuguru.com, an independent studio built to supply new digital media platforms with original content. Former Disney chairman Michael Eisner’s Tornante Co., whose recent investments include baseball card co. Topps and video-sharing site Veoh Networks, is providing the capital for the venture. The concept seems to be to find sponsors upfront and create many quality episodes of very short length. FUJI Water, POM beverages and Teleflora.com have signed on to sponsor eighty 90-second episodes of Prom Queen, a scripted, serialized mystery about love and betrayal at a high school leading up to prom night. Prom Queen will be distributed on promqueen.com, hosted by Veoh, as well as YouTube, ELLEgirl.com and other sites. It premieres online April 2.
EchoStar is preparing to launch an online video network that will serve as a portal for content from the networks it carries as well as a home for exclusive online-only video. Dish will offer special discounts on the site’s content to its DBS subscribers, according to ipdemoncracy.com, yet also allow non-subscribers to purchase downloads of shows, movies and niche international programming. Meanwhile Google is in talks to serve ads to Dish, according to a separate report on venturebeat.com.
National Geographic Channel is launching a multiplatform conservation initiative to educate viewers and users about local and global environmental issues. “Preserve our Planet” will include conservation-themed events, on air PSAs and a dedicated website ( http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/preserveourplanet/) featuring video clips, satellite maps and environmental news and resources to serve as a public forum for the topic. NationalGeographic.com is operated by National Geographic Digital Media, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the non-profit National Geographic Society.
NBCSports.com and SI.com are partnering to share broadband video, breaking news & analysis and photography from their prospective sites. SI.com will drive viewers toward NBCSports video segments such as breaking news and post-game interviews. NBCSports.com will produce broadband segments hosted by Sports Illustrated writers and link to SI.com’s analysis and commentary pieces. The two sites will also team up to offer advertisers cross-platform, multimedia ad buys.
Reality show kingpin Mark Burnett is producing a new interactive movie site for MTV and Yahoo, with ties to the on air 2007 MTV Movie Awards. User-generated clips uploaded to Yahoo! Movies will be showcased throughout the awards show broadcast live from Universal City on June 3, culminating in the “Best Movie Spoof” category award to be presented live on stage. The site launches April 23.
Sony Pictures Television International‘s multilayered, multiplatform sci fi serial Afterworld is set to launch April 1, 2007 on Afterworld.com. SPTI acquired a total of 130 two-minute episodes of the post-apocalyptic drama, produced by Stan Rogow and co-produced and written by Brent Friedman (Dark Skies, Mortal Kombat 2).
The CW‘s new hit reality series Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll will be added to the roster of series streamed exclusively on CWTV.com. (http://video.cwtv.com) A new episode will stream with limited commercial interruption every Monday, following Sunday encores of the show on The CW.
Rapt Inc. and MTV Networks struck an agreement to license Rapt’s media monetization platform across MTVN’s U.S. digital properties. MTVN will deploy Rapt software solutions to deliver pricing and inventory controls, analytic infrastructure and data-driven support capabilities. MTVN is hoping the systems will help streamline adverting efforts and boost revenues on its 44 U.S.-based sites and 10 broadband video services, from Nick.com to VH1’s VSPOT player. MTV announced mtv.com set records for traffic and video streams in January and February, and that MTV Mobile is now streaming 1 million video streams per month.
SafeMedia Corp. unveiled Clouseau, an internet piracy prevention solution that promises to eradicate online video piracy and illegal peer-to-peer file sharing. The fingerprinting solution examines all incoming and outgoing packets of data and deletes illegal P2P transmissions before they can reach their destinations. Yet it also claims to shield the identity of the user. Boca Raton, Fla.-based SafeMedia was founded by Chairman and CEO Safwat Fahmy in 2003.
On demand service provider TVN Entertainment will produce a VOD barker channel for Cox Communication’s ON Demand platform, highlighting new programming and movies each week. TVN also produces barkers for Charter and Mediacom.

AOL invited senior advertising executives, media agency leaders and digital media buyers to its “First Look” event to be held April 17 in New York. Similar to Yahoo’s “infront” presentation last month, the event will try to convince advertisers to commit a larger share of their ad buys to AOL’s portal, which includes a growing number of digital assets including reality treasure hunt Gold Rush from Mark Burnett Productions. AOL’s strategic shift from a subscription service to a free, ad-supported portal helped increase ad revenue 454 percent from 2005 to 2006, compared to a 142 percent increase in overall ad portal spending, according to a new Avenue A/Razorfish report. Online media billings were up 30 percent overall in 2006, outpacing the growth in search marketing.
Mobile internet usage and advertising is on the rise, according to a recent survey conducted for the Online Publishers Association by TNS Media and Entertainment in the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. It found that 76% of cell phone subscribers have access to the mobile web and more than a third of them have used it. Mobile ads, however, are finding greater acceptance abroad. Only 18 percent of U.S. respondents said they were receptive to the idea of watching ads in exchange for free content, compared to 37 percent in Europe.
Online video does not draw viewers from TV viewing time, according to a study by the AP and Ipsos Insight, as only 10 percent of online viewers said they watch less TV due to watching online.
Rainbow Advertising Sales Corp. announced the creation of a Client Activation Team to facilitate multiplatform, integrated and cross-marketing deals. Terry Holmstrom will serve as Vice President of Client Activation, overseeing multiplatform sales for AMC, fuse and WE across the linear channels, online, on demand, mobile, on site and outdoor categories. Terry will report to Bill Rosolie, EVP of Rainbow national network advertising sales.
Sundance Channel restructured its marketing department to better equip it for multiplatform deals:
- Kim Gabelman, VP of Branded Entertainment will oversee a number of executives, as will Lisa Ellenbogen, who was promoted to VP of Consumer Marketing.
- Reporting to Lisa is Laura Giacolone, promoted to Director of Consumer Marketing.
- New hires include Todd Peters as Director of Sponsorship Sales and Jamie Przekop as Sales Marketing Manager.
- Christina Dowdell was hired as Director of Affiliate Marketing. She will report directly to SVP of marketing Kirk Iwanowski.
- Laura Giacolone has been promoted to Director of Consumer Marketing, reporting to Lisa Ellenbogen.
SciFi.com is following the user-generated mash-up craze by sponsoring the Battlestar Galactica Videomaker Toolkit. Fans can download video and audio files from the show and use them to create their own webisode. It will be interesting to watch what folks come up with, simply because Galatica’s fans are RABID about this show. And one of them is going to get famous; executive producer David Eick will choose a mash up to air during an upcoming episode.
