Cynopsis

03/11/08

Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, March 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

With such great interest in the current political environment, MSNBC is expanding its political programming starting next Monday.

  • David Gregory, NBC News’ Chief White House Correspondent, will anchor Race for the White House, a new daily show airing from 6-7p that is expected to continue through the election period and beyond.
  • NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell will anchor MSNBC each weekday afternoon from 1-2p to further boost the network’s political coverage.
  • In addition to its regular airing at 8p each weeknight, Countdown with Keith Olbermann will now re-air a second time in primetime at 10p, in addition to a third telecast at 2a.
  • MSNBC’s “doc block” will now air weeknights from 11p-2a ET.
  • Starting March 17, Live with Dan Abrams will re-launch as Verdict with Dan Abrams, an hour-long perspective of topical legal news from 9-10p each weeknight.
  • And as for Tucker Carlson, while his show is out, MSNBC has retained him as Senior Campaign Correspondent and he will appear regularly on MSNBC’s programs.

Tonight’s Premieres:
The CW: Beauty and the Geek at 8p
BET: College Hill at 10p
A&E: Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels
MTV: Human Giant at 11p

AMC: Television’s Best Story

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The CW’s Farmer Wants a Wife, from FremantleMedia North America, makes its U.S. premiere on April 30 at 9p. The series, which is a hit around the world, follows ten city slicker gals who compete to win the heart of a country lad who lacks romance.

The Smoking Gun Presents: World’s Dumbest … is a new 10-week original series on truTV showcasing brainless behavior in a variety of situations. The series opens March 13 and March 20 at 9p with two episodes on the World’s Dumbest Criminals and future installments include the World’s Dumbest Drivers, World’s Dumbest Daredevils and World’s Dumbest Record Breakers (all working titles).

Offering a different twist to the typical relationship show, TLC presents its latest series Date My House starting April 5 at 830p just prior to a new episode of Trading Spaces. Hosted by Bob Guiney, Date My House works with homeowners who are desperate to sell their homes and are willing to put them on the competitive real estate “dating” market to attract the right buyers.

The Nielsen Company introduces a first global brand awareness campaign this summer through a marketing partnership with The New York Times company. A focal point of the campaign will feature Nielsen as the exclusive sole advertiser of The New York Times sports magazine PLAY in August, which will be dedicated to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Other print, online, radio and mobile advertisements and more will comprise the campaign.

Correction: Mentioned in yesterday’s edition, the Media General station WNEG/Toccoa is a CBS affiliate, not an independent.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

HBO, The Weinstein Company and the BBC are teaming to bring The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, based on the book series by Alexander McCall Smith, to television. Starring Jill Scott, the two-hour pilot was recently filmed on location in Botswana with Anthony Minghella directing. Minghella and Richard Curtis wrote the script while Curtis also executive produces along with Sydney Pollack and Timothy Bricknell for Mirage Enterprises and Amy Moore for Cinechicks. In addition to the pilot, HBO ordered 13 one-hour episodes which will begin production this summer. HBO will control the U.S. and Canadian television and home video rights and the BBC will handle U.K. television distribution. The Weinstein Company, which holds all other international territories, will market the project at MIP TV next month.

There’s a new Saint in town … well, actually a new version of the old Saint.  Positioned as a two hour movie, this independently produced back door pilot from Levinson/Fontana and Bill McDonald, is an up-to-date version of the old Roger Moore series, with UK actor James Purefoy in the title role.  Production is expected to begin in April.

MTV has picked up a second go-around of Randy Jackson’s America’s Best Dance Crew.  In addition, the cable net has picked up two new series – Rock the Cradle debuting April 3rd where kids of celebrities are competing. The show is from FremantleMedia North America.  The second new series is Celebrity Music Mentor Project, where a group of 8 mentors will be formed, and each mentor will then identify an amateur performer to work with and guide.  The mentors have not yet been chosen.

A new project for NBC Who Do You Think You Are, from Wall to Wall and Is or Isn’t Entertainment, and based on the UK series of the same name, reports THR.  The series explores the family trees of celebrities. NBC has given this show a series order, contingent upon the celebrity casting.

Casting Call: Fuse and Zig Zag Productions is searching for singers seeking stardom for a new show currently in production. Singers need not have professional experience; just a passion for music and a great personality. For more information, send an email to
.

Casting Call: A top cable network wants adventurous celebrities to appear on a new eight-episode reality series, Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Wrestling produced by Bischoff-Hervey Entertainment and Hulk Hogan. Participants, male and female, must be in good physical shape. Taping will happen in Los Angeles from June 2 to July 2, 2008 and besides the eight planned episodes, there is a possible two-hour finale. Salary is competitive for reality series and only serious applicants should contact Laurie D. Muslow with It’s All Good Entertainment, Inc. at 818-985-0102 or

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   The real story developing at SXSW seems to be that Facebook‘s open source platform is quickly becoming a major distribution outlet for content providers on the internet. Paramount Pictures became the first major movie studio to make clips of its movies available on the net through the new VooZoo widget developed with FanRocket. The service, a marketing tool for the studio’s DVD releases, allows users to share footage from thousands of movies. Sony Pictures Entertainment launched an app called “So Sue Me” to promote its new drama Canterbury’s Law, which premiered last night on Fox. Users can use it to “sue” their friends for being cheap, overly dramatic, etc., and recruit others in their network to serve as judge, jury and executioner. Finally web start-up Animoto launched a new application allowing users to create their own MTV-style music videos using still shots from Facebook photo albums.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
