Cynopsis: Kids!

03/10/09

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 10, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nelvana Studio and TeamTO have begun production on The New Adventures of Babar (26 episodes), a new 3D animated version of Babar.  Set to debut in fall 2010 on TF1 (France) and spring 2011 on YTV (Canada), the series has also been pre-sold to Playhouse Disney France for air in a second broadcast window.  This new 3D series introduces audiences to King Babar’s 8-year-old grandson, described as a “one-elephant stampede,” and explores the grandparent/grandchild relationship.  The series also features a range of other new characters. The New Adventures of Babar is, of course, is based on the classic books by Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff.  Two previous Babar series produced by Nelvana, the 1989-1991 version (65 episodes) produced with Ellipse Programme and the 2000-2001 series (13 episodes) produced with Ellipse Animation and Kodansha, continue to air around the world.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel premieres its new original movie Hatching Pete, on Friday, April 24 at 8p.  The movie will be simulcast on Disney Channel and on Sprint TV and MobiTV.  Starring Jason Dolley (Cory in the House), Mitchel Musso (Hannah Montana and Phineas and Ferb) and Tiffany Thornton (Sonny With A Chance), the movie revolves around Pete a 16-year-old who helps his friend Cleatus by stepping into the school mascot uniform when Cleatus can’t.  The movie will also be showcased across SVOD and mobile platforms, and with exclusive games on DisneyChannel.com.  Additionally, replays of Hatching Pete over the weekend will offer special content around the movie:  The play on Saturday, April 25 at 8p will offer a behind-the-scenes tour of the network’s new series Jonas, starring Jonas Brothers.  The brothers will host the tour; the play the next night will include a sneak peek at the upcoming Disney/Pixar movie entitled Up.

Sisimpur, the Bangladeshi version of Sesame Street begins production on its fifth season (52×30), which will debut this summer on Bangladesh Television (BTV).  Co-produced by Sesame Workshop and Nayantara Communications, Sisimpur launched on air in April 2005 as the first locally produced educational kid’s series in Bangladesh.  This season, Muppet fairy-in-training Abby Cadabby joins the Sisimpur in an interactive segment where she asks viewers to help her solve some problems.  Abby Cadabby debuted on Sesame Street in 2006 and on Mexico’s Plaza Sesamo last fall.  In addition, season 5 welcomes the new character Shanto to the neighborhood.  The nephew of two regular characters, Shanto enjoys learning and share new information and will be featured in segments focusing on family relations and social values and morals.  The series is currently airing on BTV and BTV Word in Bangladesh.

BBC Worldwide Channels acquires a range of shows, including several new series, for its international preschool channel CBeebies.  All of the series were originally commissioned by CBeebies in the UK, will roll out on the international channel, which is available in 8.9 million homes globally.

  • Waybuloo (100×20) – the mixed animated/live-action series about a world inhabited by Piplings (animal characters) that have a range of emotions.  Produced by The Foundation, a unit of RDF Media Group, Waybuloo will bow in the UK in 2009 and then roll out across CBeebies channel later in the year.
  • Also from The Foundation – Big Barn Farm (20×15) and Mister Maker (60×20).
  • Grandpa in My Pocket (26×12) – the animated series produced by Adastra Creative and acquired from Decode Enterprises.
  • Kerwhizz (26×22) – this new series features three teams of CGI characters competing to answer questions to earn add-ons for their racing machines.  An in-house CBeebies production the series is from Studio 100.
  • Big & Small (52×11) – the puppet program features unlikely best friends.  The series is a co-production between Kindle Entertainment and the 3J’s Productions, produced in association with Treehouse (Canada) and Studio 100.

MIPTV 2009

Co-production and distribution partners Atlantyca Entertainment and MoonScoop will offer broadcasters at MIPTV a look at the first completed episodes of their new animated series Geronimo Stilton (26×22). Based on the Geronimo Stilton kids’ chapter book series, the new animated TV series has been pre-sold to Radio-Canada and is scheduled to premiere on Rai (Italy) in fall 2009, and will then roll out across Europe in 2010 beginning with M6 (France).

Cookie Jar Entertainment expands its MIPTV 2009 slate of programming to include:

  • The Tales from Cryptville (1×90) – a new TV movie that features the ever-popular narrator, the Cryptkeeper.  The movie premieres on Teletoon (Canada) in fall 2009.
  • The new animated preschool version of its series The Doodlebops.  The new series is comprised of 26×30 episodes and the animated version of the stars will help solve preschool-centric problems.  The series has been picked up by CBC (Canada).
  • Cookie Jar will also offer new seasons of its series: Caillou – season five is currently in production for air later this year; Busytown Mysteries (Hurray For Huckle!) – CBC picks up season two; Johnny Test – the new episodes (season four) will bow on Teletoon this fall; and the new season of Arthur, which PBS has acquired.

Beyond Distribution will showcase three one-hour family centric documentaries at MIPTV.  While these are not specifically for kids – the revolve around family-related issues:

  • Lost Adventures of Childhood – Produced by Sunday Night Entertainment, this documentary explores the decline of unsupervised play for kids and how this could impact learning and development.  Where kids used to play outside freely and travel from house to house – those times are long gone and parents now face concerns of stranger danger on a daily basis.
  • How To Divorce And Not Wreck The Kids – the special looks at three families where the parents have chosen alternatives to traditional divorces and how they are dealing.  The doc is produced by Bountiful Films.
  • The 200kg Kid – A Rouge Productions documentary about a 15-year-old who is believed to be the heaviest teen in New Zealand and the operation the doctors and family look to save the teens life.

Today’s Trivia Question:  We were talking in the office the other day of girls names that begin with the letter “E” and what a nice name Elsie is, except of course it was also the name of a cow.  The question is, for what company was Elsie the Cow originally a spokes-moo?    (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
