Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
06.30.09
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, June 30, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Last week’s edition defined some of the decisive economic indicators in an attempt to make sense of all the financial reports we see/hear/read in the news. The following are remaining indicators we will examine.
Retail Sales Index uses a small sampling of retail stores (both chains and local Mom & Pops) throughout the country. It is a predictive number that often includes significant revisions. Some economists prefer the “ex-auto” figure (without car sales) because they feel it more accurately reflects the purchasing trends.
National Association of Purchasing Management – NAPM – examines manufacturing productivity. NAPM is also seen as a indicator of inflationary pressures. A reading of 50% or greater intimates manufacturing is growing, however, a reading of under 50% indicates manufacturing is on a decline.
The Consumer Confidence Index determines how confident consumers feel about the economy and their spending power. When people feel secure in their income, they generally spend more than in times of uncertainty. The Consumer Confidence Index samples approximately 5,000 households throughout the country and tallies the number of job opportunities in newspaper classifieds to determine trends in the labor market. Many economist believe that a high Consumer Confidence Index is crucial for recovery.
The Beige Book is a summary of economic conditions according to region. It is published eight times a year and is often used as an indicator of possible actions of the Federal Reserve.
Durable Goods Orders measures the amount of money people spend on items expected to last more than three years. This monthly figure is broken down by industry to cancel the effect of the more unstable sectors like defense spending.
Employment Cost Index – ECI – is a quarterly report that determines the cost of labor including wages, benefits and bonuses. As the cost of labor increases, companies may deal with the additional expense by hiring fewer people, putting a cap on bonuses and/or decreasing workers’ benefits or the cost can be passed on to the consumer creating higher prices.
The Productivity Report measures the output created by a unit of labor. Increased productivity allows the economy to grow without inflation. If productivity is up, a company can increase workers pay without additional costs or cutbacks.
Next week: Thinking about a career change?

MONEY TALKS
Money is the last thing you want to talk about on an initial job interview. Your goal at that meeting is to sell yourself as the dream candidate for the open position. Focus on the myriad of ways you’ll contribute to your future employer, not on what you’ll cost. If you’re asked about your salary requirements, simply say you’re assuming that the firm pays market value and that’s exactly what you’re looking for. Stress that you don’t believe money would be any obstacle to your taking the position if it’s offered you.
If you are indeed offered the position, and haven’t yet discussed compensation, you’re in the strongest financial position you’ll ever find yourself on a job. As the top candidate you’ve unlimited potential. You’ve never come up short or failed to deliver. Yet it’s still in your interest to avoid broaching the money issue.
When a potential employee is the first to mention a dollar figure, the only direction the negotiation can move is down. When the potential employer puts the first number on the table the only direction it can move is up. That said, you don’t want to get into a duel over the subject with your potential employer.
If you’re forced to break the ice, offer up a number at the very top end of what you’ve determined is market value for the position, so any subsequent back and forth will still leave you in the top half of the range. If presented with a figure, say you appreciate the offer but believe that for someone of your skill/experience a figure 15 percent higher would be more appropriate. Resistance to negotiate is best met with asking for things other than salary, such as more vacation time.
Next week: How do I have my resume increase my chances of getting an interview?

Questions from our Readers
While trying to get a fledging branded entertainment company off the ground, I am also looking for freelance and/or other full time opportunities as a Creative Director/Writer/Producer. In my profile on a major job networking site, I list myself as currently employed with my new company. I wondered if the experts could speak to how recruiters generally use these types of sites: i.e., how they search for candidates, and whether or not I should make it clear in my profile heading that I’m looking for work.
The key question you ask is, “… should [I] make it clear in my profile heading that I’m looking for work” – the answer is yes, yes and yes. And with specificity. What kind of work are you looking for and what value will you bring to the person or organization who will hire you? Spending creative time translating what you “do” into a value proposition for a prospective employer, is the headline you should lead with.
When should an employee discuss with their current employer that they are actively searching and interviewing for new positions,or should they wait until a position is offered by the new company to bring it up- particularly with the current job market in mind? And, is it appropriate to use the threat of leaving a company to speed up the promotion process or a pay increase? Thank you!
There is no hard and fast rule about when to discuss with a current employer that you are searching and interviewing for new positions. A lot depends on the relationship you have with one another, and the organization’s situation. I have seen instances where such conversations are had openly and safely with a couple of different outcomes: 1) the employee’s reasons for wanting to leave are openly discussed and in some instances the outcome is the employee’s concerns are handled and the employee stays; and 2) the employer supports the employees reasons for wanting to leave and there is a mutual agreement about the how and when, even support of the employee in their job search. Whether to be candid or not is a matter of judgment.
To the second point, in my view it is never appropriate to use a threat of leaving to speed up a promotion or pay increase.

McDowell, who previously finished out the unexpired term of former Chairman Michael Powell, will get his first full term.
