Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06/30/09
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 30, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
There may yet be hope to get everything you want on demand after all. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal from major studios and networks to block Cablevision‘s plan to launch a network DVR solution in its New York area systems. The network DVR architecture essentially stores all programming on network servers then streams it to viewers when they request it, bringing DVR functionality without the need to deploy expensive hard drive-equipped set tops. NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX and others sued Cablevision back in 2006, complaining that such usage crossed the fair use line. Not so, says the high court, which heard the case despite calls from the Obama administration to let sleeping dogs lie. The decision could have huge implications on the industry, vastly increasing DVR penetration and providing cable with a considerable competitive advantage over satellite. Cablevision says it will begin deploying the technology later this summer.
Leave it to the scrappy, cash-strapped outsiders to innovate. Ion Media Networks announced the launch of its promised Open Mobile Video Coalition-compliant triple play digital broadcast technology in New York and Washington D.C. Ion’s owned-and-operated stations in the two cities will deliver three Ion digital TV HD channels, multiple local digital feeds and mobile TV transmissions under one digital TV signal – a first for the industry. ION is using technology known as ATSC-M/H, which was developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee specifically to enable delivery of television to mobile and handheld devices.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences turned to content syndication platform Mochilla to archive over 600 videos of major stars and industry luminaries for its charitable division’s web portal EmmyTVLegends.com. Mochila is providing all website design and development including custom CMS components, search, video transcoding, editing and hosting. One of the site’s key features will be the ability to clip indexed segments from the Archive’s thousands of hours of interview content.
ESPN unveiled its newly redesigned ESPN Outdoors site, the latest ESPN site to feature streamlined navigation and 16:9 formatted video streaming.
CNBC.com added a new blog from Business reporter David Farber.
A new portal called Talenthouse launches today aggregating the works of artists from multiple disciplines including music, fashion, fine art, graphic design, film and photography. The brainchild of British recording artists Amos Pizzey and run by CEO Roman Scharf, Talenthouse allows artists like supermodel Naomi Campbell to build their own profiles for free to display their work in full screen mode, gather followers and alert friends when new work is posted. The site’s business model includes selling subscriptions to its database to TV and film studios and talent agencies (think IMDB pro) as well as launching brand-triggered creative competitions to source the community for new designs (sort of a multidisciplinary Filmaka.)
The bad boy founders of Pirate Bay are getting ready to launch a video sharing site dubbed VideoBay that won’t bother users with copyright takedown notices, per Torrent Freak. Pirate Bay’s founders were found guilty of copyright infringement in a Swedish court in April, ordered to pay damages of $3.6 million to several entertainment giants.
YouTube launched its own portal to help instruct citizen journalists about how to practice better reporting. YouTube’s Reporter’s Center features house-made videos, clips from seasoned Pros from Dover including Katie Couric and Bob Woodward and practical shooting tips from sources such as Howcast.
Subscription-based anime site Cruncyroll continues to add to its live action offerings with full-length episodes of Martial Arts series from Tai Seng Entertainment.
If news publishers are going to make up for the drop in print revenues their going to have to tap into the global pool of digital ad dollars. Digital ad agency AdGent 007 reached an agreement with The Huffington Post to sell ad inventory for territories outside of the U.S. AdGent 007 will combine its overseas-based sales force with targeting technology to help site monetize its growing international traffic.
Microsoft has retained the services of Morgan Stanley to find a buyer for Seattle-based digital agency Razorfish, reports the FT. Microsoft acquired the interactive services specialist as part of its $6 billion takeover of aQuantive in 2007. The software giant announced a series of deals during the Cannes advertising festival last week including a complex arrangement with Publicis.
MSNBC.com, which has surged to the top of the heap of news sites according to Nielsen Online, launched its own free ad supported iPhone/iPod Touch app. View clips of NBC News and MSNBC shows, read blog entries and peruse the Twitter feeds of your favorite MSNBC news personalities. The app is powered by the Zumboi Network.
Yowza!! is the name of new mobile couponing app for the iPhone co-created by Heroes star Greg Grunberg that has signed on a number of national food and retail chains to provide paper free deals including REI, Sears, California Pizza Kitchen and McDonalds. Simply search for national or regional deals and the cashier will scan the coupon directly from the device.
Yamaha is rolling out a new line of neoHD wireless media controllers that can easily hook up to navigate multiple AV components including TVs, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and of course Yamaha receivers. The interface guides the user through a tree of activities, starting with “Watch/Listen/Play” options and queries as to which devices you’d like to power up.
Weather Channel Interactive upped business development executive Cameron Clayton as VP/Mobile, responsible for the company’s mobile product portfolio, which includes The Weather Channel mobile WAP site and line of mobile interactive products. Cameron is based in TWCi’s Atlanta headquarters.
MTV Games appointed a pair of new executives. Scott Guthrie, formerly EVP/Publishing for THQ, joins as EVP and GM to lead the video game publishing group’s management team. Also joining MTV Games is former Sony Computer Entertainment America sales executive David Cox as SVP/Sales.
Facebook hired former Genetech CFO David Ebersman become the company’s Chief Financial Officer, effective Sept. 2009. David will oversee Facebook’s finance, accounting, investor relations, and real estate functions and report to CEO and Founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Online city transit guide HopStop.com hired former GM of AOL’s Quigo Technologies Joe Meyer as President and CEO. He replaces founding CEO Chinedu Echeruo, who recently left to start a private equity fund focused on Africa.
Former TotalMusic product manager Jason Herskowitz has joined Lime Wire as VP/Product Management, reporting to CEO George Searle. In this newly created position, Jason will oversee Lime Wire’s integrated product strategy, planning, design and management.
Correction: The official sites for Universal’s Bruno feature is the delightful MySpace profile parody www.meinspace.com. Bruno already has 341,445 friends. He also has over 495k fans on Facebook.
Rainbow Media’s AMC Digital Media division announced its first two acquisitions. Joining AMC.tv are fan/editorial site filmsite.org, a good place for compilations such as Greatest Bond Girls or the Greatest Chase Scenes in Film History, and film review compendium filmcritic.org, which still pays its critics to review movies. AMC has begun integrating content from the two sites across the network’s digital spectrum, for instance repurposing filmcritic’s reviews in the weekly “AMC News Short and Tweet” blog entry, which is also pushed to AMC’s video-laden iPhone app. Rainbow is participating in Comcast’s TV Everywhere trial, so presumably we’ll see full length Mad Men episodes on AMC.tv when the authentication system is considered fail safe. In lieu of full-length episodes, cable networks have had to get creative to get viewers to tune into their sites. AMC has relined on fun interactive features and movie-focused couch programming to get to job done thus far, according to Mac McKean, AMC’s VP of Digital Media and Content. Like Rainbow’s IFC News, AMC News hits the road to cover film festivals and the shooting of its high profile original shows. During the shooting of the upcoming Prisoner miniseries, AMC actually “embedded” its own multimedia producer on the set in Africa to upload interviews and behind-the-scene footage in real time.
