As the auto industry continues along a bumpy road, Discovery Channel brings back a new reincarnation of its car fantasy series, Monster Garage or MG. This fall, MG: Motor City goes to Detroit, and follows a pair of innovative bike designers and builders leading a team of fabricators, mechanics and welders who transform ordinary vehicles into imaginative contraptions, all in seven days and using only $3,000. The original Monster Garage aired on Discovery Channel from 2002 to 2006, developed and produced by Thom Beers of Original Productions. This new version is also produced by Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company with Thom Beers and Tom McMahon as executive producers.

CBS is changing the date of its 61st Primetime Emmy Awards presentation to September 13. On the previously scheduled date, September 20, CBS is airing a doubleheader NFL game which could spill over into primetime, thereby prompting the move. Don Mischer Productions produces the Emmy Awards broadcast and the nominations will be announced July 16.

Bravo reveals a new branding campaign surrounding a revamped tagline “By Bravo”. The new look and tagline begins June 23, in conjunction with the launch of new docu-soap series NYC Prep. Bravo’s new re-branding will be integrated across all its platforms including TV, online and mobile.

Now that June is here, Science Channel has scheduled its annual Space Week to open June 21 through June 26, with programming beginning each night at 9p. The highlight of the week includes the six-part series, Exodus Earth with host Dr. Basil Singer exploring the question: could humans live on another planet or possibly one of the moons of Saturn or Jupiter? The week also includes the new special, Cheat Sheet to the Mysteries of the Universe on June 22 at 9p and a special episode of the series, Build It Bigger on June 26 at 9p.

Over 43 total games, TNT scored with its coverage of the 2009 NBA Playoffs, earning increases across the board over last year’s coverage (41 games) in key demos:
A18-34: +19% (1.45 million vs. 1.21 million)
A18-49:  +23% (2.68 million vs. 2.24 million)
A25-54: +23% (2.51 million vs. 2.05 million)
Total Viewers: +24% (4.71 million vs. 3.80 million)

Spike TV will air the popular original web series, Angel of Death, starring Zoe Bell and Lucy Lawless as a 90-minute full-length movie on July 25. The series originally debuted March 2 on Sony Pictures Entertainment’s online video network, Crackle.com as a 10-episode web series and was viewed online by approximately 5 million viewers. Following the airing on Spike, the movie will be released on DVD July 28.

VH1 will offer a third season of its reality series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew with eight 60m episodes scheduled to debut in early 2010. The new edition will follow more celebrity patients as they enter a 21-day therapy and treatment program at The Pasadena Recovery Center. Celebrities signed for this next edition include MacKenzie Phillips, Heidi Fleiss, Tom Sizemore, Dennis Rodman, Mindy McCready, Lisa D’Amato, Mike Starr, Joey Kovar and Kari Ann Peniche. Irwin Entertainment produces the series.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

On July 20, BBC Worldwide launches BBC America HD, the hi-def simulcast of BBC America and during the same week, BBC America HD ushers in several sci-fi US premieres and one season finale:

  • New episodes of Torchwood: Children of Earth begin July 20 at 9p airing over five consecutive nights.
  • Primeval ends its third season July 25 at 8p.
  • Also on July 25, the BBC America co-production of Being Human premieres at 9p.
  • The first of the last four Doctor Who specials with David Tennant in the lead airs July 26 at 8p.

Entertainment Studios, Inc. announced a firm go for its new stand-up comedy series, Comedy.TV. The series, hosted by Whitney Cummings is clearing on broadcast television stations nationwide for a fall 2009 syndicated launch. The weekly, one-hour hi-def series was designed for primetime and will also be included on one of Entertainment Studios’ new hi-def television networks. Created and developed by Byron Allen, Founder/Chairman/CEO of Entertainment Studios, Allen will also serve as executive producer of the series

ITV Global Entertainment Ltd. made an agreement with Acorn Media U.S. involving more than 300 hours of programming to be released by Acorn Media U.S. on DVD and Blu-ray in North America over several years. Programming includes content produced by ITV Studios such as the drama series Agatha Christie’s Marple and Agatha Christie’s Poirot. The deal also covers documentaries chosen from the ITV Global Entertainment catalog for distribution through the new Athena branded line of informative, non-fiction content on DVD.

HISTORY launched localized services in Bulgaria on Eurocom Cable Management yesterday. HISTORY HD will follow on this same service by this third quarter. Both networks will also launch on localized services on the Slovenian IPTV platform, Planet 9. Both are available currently in Slovenia via T2, SBB, UPC and TUS Telekom.

IdeaCast, Inc. and E! Entertainment made a distribution deal allowing E! to be shown on IdeaCast’s Health Club TV, targeting approximately 1,000 health clubs nationwide. Health Club TV inserts custom commercials into the live network program feed and is available in some of the top franchises such as Town Sports International Holdings Inc.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Nadya Suleman, also known as “Octomom,”, the Southern California woman who gave birth to the world’s longest-surviving octuplets, signed a television show deal with 3Ball Productions. The show has not been sold to a US network, though the format will be similar to a program airing in Denmark produced by Amsterdam-based Eyeworks International, parent company of 3Ball Productions. The Denmark show documents the lives of four children from the time they were born until they reach adulthood. 3Ball is planning to follow this type of format which would be less intrusive, opting to document Suleman and her children during special events and birthdays, rather than following them with cameras 24/7. 3Ball Productions, based in Manhattan Beach, CA has created such reality shows as The Biggest Loser, For Love Or Money and Beauty & The Geek.

Casting Call: Food Network presents the Food Network Challenge, looking for outgoing families who are competitive, have a great story as well as unique Thanksgiving food traditions to battle in a nationally televised Thanksgiving meal competition. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Panel measurement has long been criticized for skewing online measurement results, conflicting with internal server logs and fomenting doubt among media buyers. ComScore unveiled a new “panel centric hybrid” online measurement methodology that combines the company’s 2 million-person global panel with server metrics to try and provide a more granular level of reporting and finally account for 100% of a Web site’s audience. comScore clients can choose to implement hybrid measurement for their own sites by embedding “beacon” calls on user-requested content. comScore says it has built out a robust infrastructure to handle the requests and has partnered with Akamai to use their Web Application Acceleration Solutions to deliver fast response times. comScore also announced it is launching a new “universe report” system to  provide visibility into access of web sites from mobile devices and computers outside of home and work, (i.e. internet cafes, schools, libraries, and other non-private locations.)   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL

Friday – A18-49 Analysis: CBS and UNIV both captured the top number among A18-49 Friday night at 1.5/5 each, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p, UNIV’s Cuidado con el Angel led with 1.4/6 while CBS’ movie and FOX’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics! tied for second place at 1.2/5 apiece. UNIV increased its lead during 9p as Manana es para Siempre won with 1.8/6 over NBC’s Dateline at 1.5/5. CBS “crossed the line” to #1 through 10p as its movie Walk the Line did best at 1.8/6 and NBC’s Dateline placed second again at 1.6/5.

Rodolfo Martinez advanced to VP/Production with ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Rodolfo will be in charge of production of ESPN’s networks outside the US encompassing ESPN in Latin America, ESPN Pacific Rim, ESPN Atlantic and ESPN Dos in addition to ESPN Deportes. Discovery Communications hired Brent Spitzer for the position of VP/Digital Advertising Sales, Eastern Region. Brent will supervise the company’s digital ad sales throughout the Eastern territory and will spearhead the development of digital sales programs and strategic plans. Based in New York, Brent will report to Kathleen Kayse, EVP/Digital Advertising Sales.
 
Former KABC-TV broadcaster, Jane Monreal is leading a new business in Los Angeles called enCompass Entertainment, LLC, focused on the creation, development, production and packaging of original content for multi-media distribution. The company will also be involved with talent development, talent packaging and global branding via digital content.
 
Market research firm, The Dohring Company named Rick Wilson as COO to manage the company’s growth in the areas of programming, hosting, sample and data processing.
